TRANSCRIPT
Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the first in a 6-part video series on launching a peer reviewed scholarly journal. This part is called, Research and Development.
Starting a peer review scholarly journal may seem like an enormous endeavor. As with most efforts, however, breaking it down into its component parts makes the challenge more manageable.
For much of this video series, I will keep the discussion at a high level. Occasionally I will dive into the details. Each step I cover could be the subject of a video by itself, so be mindful of the time involved. Do the research.
I’ll be discussing academic journals. Not magazines. I will be addressing peer reviewed publication, versus non-peer reviewed.
There are several business models for journals: subscription, open access, or publications provided as a member benefit. I will try to keep the details applicable for all, but some of my comments will more specifically address open access, the trend for new launches. A reminder, open access is a journal distributed online with no cost or barrier to reading with a license that removes most restrictions on use. I will also assume the new journal charges an APC or article processing charge.
I will assume viewers are from a non-profit organization, although my comments apply to others as well.
The first step is developing a focus for the publication. There are arguments for a very narrow focus and arguments for a broad one. This focus leads to the beginnings of a mission statement and eventually the Aims and Scope for the publication. Look at other journals’ Aims and Scope to understand what is usually covered in this document. Look to draft a mission statement and Aims and Scope before proceeding. Of course, these items may change as you work through the process.
These tasks may also help inform the article types the journal is interested in. Maybe the journal just wants to publish original research. Maybe it is interested in review articles or case reports. Think about the ideal content for the publication.
As these larger issues are decided, think through whether the publication will be online only, in print, or both. Also, start to make some preliminary decisions on frequency. In the online only world of real time posting of accepted articles, this matters less. Thinking in issue form with a target number of articles, however, helps envision the size of project.
Finally, sustainability is key. Don’t plow all your efforts into launch and not consider whether the community can support the publication for years to come, both from a reader and an author perspective. What are the appropriate expenses and where does the revenue come from? Does the revenue come from open access fees, subscriptions, ad sales, or from membership? Be realistic and think through the finances of the endeavor as you progress along this timeline.
Well that’s it. I am a publishing consultant and work with associations, publishers, and individuals on a host of content related challenges including launching a new journal. Reach out to me at RiverwindsConsulting.com with your questions.

Starting my own journal creation journey, I can't help to wonder if a publication in print form with a respectable publishing house will usually require a preliminary and/or constant payment to the publishing house or if their revenues will come exclusively from the sales they make once the volumes start to appear to the public

Sir, I have a question in my mind, please respond it, how research journals and publishers reserved copy rights, like when we check plagiarism of any published article or book, it shows 100% plagiarized against the name of that journal. How they do that, is there any central database which maintain record or what ?

Sir, thank you for the question. What software are you using to check plagiarism? Please explain what you mean by "it shows 100% plagiarized against the name of that journal." Best wishes.
