UPDATE: There is some double note triggering going on with this device. I'm personally not bothered by it because the double triggered notes are very soft. If you play with fixed velocity however, this might cause problems!
@inspector-tech5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Is it definitely an issue? Would you do a short update video on it? Maybe Novation can take note and maybe release a firmware update?
@TheQuestforGroove5 жыл бұрын
The issue is very small in my experience. Problem is that with fixed velocity the super soft gits will be 100% loudness and then it's annoying. I will let novation know!
@SideFlame5 жыл бұрын
Yeah just received mine and I'm getting constant double triggering. Not really sure what to do, is my unit faulty or is this .. normal?
@TheQuestforGroove5 жыл бұрын
@SideFlame well... I think there might be a better unit out there for you. Because I have some double note triggering but when I'm playing it actually isn't annoying at all. So it could be personal taste, by it I suspect that it just might be worse in some devices. In my controller it happens when my finger swipes across the pads instead of cleanly hitting them. A repetitive clean hit with one finger never triggers a double note. What I would do first is turn aftertouch off and pick the heavier velocity curve in settings. (You have to hold one button and then you get these menus. It's all in the manual). That might help. If it keeps happening constantly and loudly, it might be a faulty device. That said, double note triggering happens in basically every pad controller in some way or form. So trying to find one that never ever does this is not a mission you want to take on.

@TheQuestforGroove2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks! I still feel that way regularly. It really depends on the type of groove that I'm playing. :-) All I can say is that regularly playing and counting out loud, swiching where the metronome click falls and stuff like that (i made videos about all of those things here on the channel) those things over time will make it much easier to get a groove to work. Sometimes with a couple of days of practice and maybe multiple takes though. That still applies to me too.

Hey gang, Based on this review, I spent 2 hours in a local music shop to try this Launchpad X for myself (using a drumkit in Ableton Live). My conclusions differ substantially. I found the soft velocities to be un-evenly or simply not at all reproduced by the Launchpad X, which wasn't the case with Push 2. Push to me was much better and felt like an instrument and not a controller. I actually had the opposite problem with Push, it triggered even the slightest touch, so I went into unwanted neighbouring pads triggering. Also, the rectangle shape of the Push pads felt less natural to me. But in terms of responsiveness, that was another experience compared to X. It felt like X had 16 velocity steps, where Push would have 128 or so. To me X's pads are just large enough but smaller would make it a challenge to finger drum. Also, some pads had a little protruding dot at their center, which felt distracting when playing. I was very tempted to buy one just for slice triggering in Beatmaker 3, but I'd ideally like to find a 64-pad controller that really feels like an instrument (but as a drummer I may be especially picky). I didn't run into double triggering issues at all, though. I also tried an M-Audio Code 25 that was less bad than expected but the chassis resounds when hitting the pads (that are comfortably large, though) and triggering was a bit rougher than the X, but not that much. I also tried a controller with a classy wooden base and intercheangeable "mats" that I was pretty surprised by. I wouldn't make it my main pads system but it was pretty good. I used to own a grey Akai MPD but sold it years ago, so I'm unable to compare. I don't have good memories in particular in terms of responsiveness. My MPK mini is a nice toy but again, the responsiveness is rough as it tends to translate medium velocities as hard hits. I was on the hunt for a dedicated controller and not a software combination, so I only spent a few minutes with Maschine MK3 and an MPC Live and both felt like a robust piece of gear. I did not spend the time with actual sounds, though. Maschine pads felt a little more like cold hard plastic than the Live's to me. I would ideally take 64 of Push's (or maybe Maschine's or MPC Live's) pads in a slightly larger format Launchpad X... So, my advice would be to try it for yourself before you buy, if you can. Based on the above, would a Korg Pad Kontrol white be the answer to my pad quest? (as recommended in another video)
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Quick reply from the train: I can share with you that I bought another Launchpad X just to compare two devices side by side and they respond differently from one another. The 'newer' launchpad has no double note triggering at all but responds less well to softer touches. I contacted novation to ask if they changed something hardware wise after the first batch. Still waiting for a reply. All that said, when comparing to other devices on the market right now I would still consider both Launchpad X'es to be in the top tier in terms of pad quality. Theres a velocity setting inside the device. On the heavier launchpad I set it to the lightest setting and on the lighter launchpad I set it to the heavier setting. That made them both very playable. But still a bit of a big difference between the two. The dots on the pads are for visually impaired people by the way. With 64 pads you need some anchor points besides the edges.
@pascaldeshayes54594 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the details! Could you please elaborate on how to change the velocity curve of the pads, please? Is that a per-pad process or global for the whole Launchpad X? Please let us know what Novation say, that would be really helpful! I may have to spend 1 hour opening all the Xs they have in stock to find a good one... not sure they'll allow me to do that...
@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
You have to hold the Session button (middle top) and then press the second button on the right side of the device (from the top, its called > PAN). You can also turn aftertouch off, which seems to make a small improvement for some peple. Thats the same process but then the 3rd button on the right (from the top again > Send A). I'm investigating some more and Im planning on doing a video in a few weeks diving a little deeper into the "how to get good pads" problem. I'm sort of lucky to hear from my students what their expriences are with controllers and one of the big issues that keeps coming up is that for every controller there are always "bad specimens". In the case of akai mpd218 it seemed to be getting worse and worse so I stopped recommending it even though I have one pretty solid MPD218 myself. But yesterday I heard from someone he got a Presonus Atom with very inconsistently responding pads and it was fixed by returning it and getting another Atom. The maschine mikro seems to have improved with firmware updates and is now on par with my bigger maschine mk3. But that might also be because after 2,5 years, my big maschine mk3 has lost some of its sensitivity (wear and tear). Which is also something I should talk about because you can buy 2 maschine mikro''s and one presonus atom for the price of one big maschine mk3. Dropping $600 every 2,5 years is also not feasible for a lot of people. Obviously these insights only recently came to light because I'm now experiencing them with my maschine. Anyways... I want my next video about this topic to be clear about all of these difficulties and still give you a "best buy advice" for 2020. But my guess is it will be a "best chance of getting something decent in 2020" video and not a "just buy this, it is a no brainer... that seems to be impossible with the level of quality control and what most people want from their pad controllers (most people dont care about these 'small' differences, so manufacturers get away with it)"
@pascaldeshayes54594 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuestforGroove I've compared the new X to my MPK mini and the mini responds better to soft nuances (although the ramp is pretty rough)... Is there any realistic solution other than trying 30 Xs in a shop to pick one? ;-)

@@pascaldeshayes5459 I think maybe try a maschine mikro mk3 in the shop and see how that feels? The sensitivity of that one can be set in controller editor (midi mode) or in maschine software itself. Its 4x4 but perhaps a better fit in terms of pads?

@TheQuestforGroove4 жыл бұрын
Ez drummer is a bit of a bummer. That rhymes but it's true. You cannot change the drum map inside ez drummer. What you have to do is see if you can setup the notes of the pads inside the llaunchkey first. That might work with Novation Components software. If that doesnt work my advice would be to try and use this free plugin called "note mapper". That allows you to map any midi note to another note instantly. That way you can send the right pad to the right sound in ez drummer. It's a bit of a hassle though. In addictive drums 2 for example you can just use midi learn inside the program to instantly assign sounds to pads...

Cool channel for a bit of an esoteric niche. Thanks! I'm generally interested in developing my "drumming brain". I am mediocre at playing the physical drums as I don't get to play them often. How much do you think finger drumming helps with both being able to program better (more natural sounding) drum parts and being better at playing physical drums?
@TheQuestforGroove Жыл бұрын
There will be some overlap with physical drums and programming better will also be a thing. However, it does feel like a bit of an unnecessary detour to learn finger drumming in order to get better at real drums. There must be a way to actually develop real drumming skills even though you might not have much time on the kit. Like using a practice pad and stuff like that. You're probably better off thinking about that than actually learning a different skill. I use finger drumming for all my drums and I'm happy with doing it that way which is why I spent all this time learning it.

I’ve really been digging your channel recently. Thank for all the great advice and tutorials. I have a question. I have been making music with virtual instruments and Reaper for about a decade now, but recently I’ve been wanting to learn finger drumming in order to speed up the process. I have some pads on my midi controller (Nektar Panorama P4) but there are only 12, and they are not quite sensitive enough in my opinion. I use them mostly for adding my favorite instruments to tracks, triggering key switches etc. I would like to get a pad controller for use with my many drum vsti’s, and I think I would like this one because 16 pads does not seem like enough to lay out all the samples I want to use. I would like to have all my articulations available without having to switch pages, so 64 pads seems like a good idea. My question is do you think this is too much for me to deal with as a beginning finger drummer? My plan is to get decent at making basic beats with kick, snare, hats, ride, crash at first. I can always overdub fills at a lower tempo until I get more proficient at “live” finger drumming. I am very close to pulling the trigger on this device because I don’t think 16 pads will be enough. It will work ok with Reaper, correct? Will it conflict with my existing keyboard style midi controller? Sorry for the wall of text!

@@reset_rt Ah ok. Well, the sounds you hear are not basic samples. It's a software drumkit from addictive drums 2. Specifically the black oyster kit. You need the software to get the sound you hear. The software will play a different sample based on how soft or loud you hit the pad and will also use round robin samples. So two hits with the same velocity will play two different, but very similar samples. That's what makes the drums sound real. And with that said... I cannot distribute the individual drum sounds. That's the only thing that's "illegal" in the terms of service of addictive drums. :-) I have a tip though: black Friday is coming up and usually addictive drums will be 50% off then. The mini is good for what it is but I cannot play it the way i want to precisely because of the lack of velocity. Also the buttons are more clicky. Hello fellow dutchy, I am looking into starting with some finger drumming.. So looking to buy a controller. I had seen on your website that you dont really suggest an 8x8 like this for complete beginners because of the pad size.. Is this still what you feel to be the case? The launchpad X is very affordable at 180 euro or there abouts.. Also looked at the Maschine Mikro mk3 which was one of your main suggestions, but part of me feels like.. i can do more on the launch pad (more pads.. hehe) and the maschine mikro is 50 euro more expensive from the looks of it. I do still need an audio interface aswell, so maybe that would be the deciding factor... But im just unsure as to what to do :/

Hey sorry for the late reply. You can get an 8x8 like the launchpad and just set it up in a simple way not using all the pads. That way the only thing you have to deal with is smaller pads. Yes thats more difficult but you can learn to work with them for sure.

Awesome stuff man your videos are great! I just bought the launchpad pro mk3 and I use logic pro as a DAW. Any recommendations for the easiest way to map the notes? I am currently building out a template in components and changing the note/octave for each drum but its a pain in the ass since it's different for everything.
@TheQuestforGroove3 жыл бұрын
Hey, the way you did is is how I did it too. The only thing you can do is to drag in 4 drum grids and then just change the starting note of each grid, making shure the notes are 16 semitones apart so none of them overlap. That's a lot quicker. You cannot change the color of each note then though.
@DBendo8883 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuestforGroove thanks for the quick reply you are the man! For clarity, what would you assign each starting note to ensure the pads are 16 semitones apart? If I did C0-C3 I would still be overlapping no?
@TheQuestforGroove3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not 100% sure but with those drum grids it basically starts on the note you assign it to and then it goes up in semitones through all 16 pads. So you want grid number 1 to be C0 for example and then grid number 2 should not start until 16 semitones later otherwise there's still overlap.

Great advice, as always. Novation has really delivered. I'm guessing you'd say that a Maschine Mikro MK3 probably still makes sense for a budget-minded, no-DAW beginner who wants a great feel and needs to be able to customize the MIDI notes that the pads trigger?
@aptudo5 жыл бұрын
BTW, I have a Linnstrument already for playing my synths. I also sometimes wonder if it would be worth trying to learn your finger drumming techniques on that.
@TheQuestforGroove5 жыл бұрын
Linnstrument is not the best for fingerdrumming. I tried a lot and it's always a relief to go back to maschine :-) The advice about mikro vs this thing gets more complicated because the pads of the launchpad x are very good. Maybe even a little better than mikro mk3. And on top of that, you have custom modes now so on launchpad x you can also change the notes! All I can say is that drumming in 8x8 is not something I would do all the time. 4x4 is more than enough to play a great groove and it's less confusing. 64 small pads are a recipe for accidentally hitting the pad next to the one you want to hit. For beginners learning how to do finger drumming definitely get 4x4. Starting with 8x8 is like foing to the gym for the first time and lifting 300 pounds.
@aptudo5 жыл бұрын
The Quest for Groove thanks very much for taking the time to share your in depth thoughts. @@aptudo a good mikro mk3 is always a great buy. Make sure you get the license key for the software though! Without it it's hard or even impossible to get the device working! 4 layouts on the device and you can save any layout you make as a file on tour computer and then load it onto the launchpad. But 4 on the device itself. I think because the pads are so small it's easy to accidentally hit them. And because they're so sensitive you have to be very accurate in how and where you got the pads. My first tip would be to set up a very simple layout and not use all the pads. That way you can color outside the lines a bit. :-) I think the most sensitive setting is the best actually! Gives you the most control and it's just a matter of practicing to be able to accurately harness that power.

@@oxyehho there might be some double note triggering going on from within the pad. What it might be is that your samples trigger at full velocity even when the pads trigger super softly.
