I’m sorry y’all… I watched the hearing and I’m just now watching so my thoughts are a bit late but his Mother knew everything. Roberta had a problem sharing her useless Son. That’s why Gabby footed the bill for everything. He didn’t put anything into the journey and his Mother didn’t want him to go away so apparently all she was willing to provide was a shovel.

I think after he told his parents what he had done, he also told them that he held off telling them right away because he was afraid they would hate him. If that is what he told them, it would provide a motive for Roberta writing the letter. . . to reassure him that "nothing" could stop her from loving him.
