Brian Laundrie's parents were uncooperative from the start, which indicates that they knew and protected their son and had no regard for Gabby Petito and her family. Although I can understand parents' natural inclination to protect their child, this becomes irrelevant when their child has committed murder. In this case, they acted in the most callous way toward Gabby and her parents and covered up a murder.. They should be held accountable and end up behind bars for obstruction of justice.
@jenniferlynn3537 Жыл бұрын
I know your heart is in the right place, Olivier - and heaven knows how much I’d like to see the Laundries held accountable for their callousness - but unfortunately the legal definition of “obstructing justice” doesn’t apply here - at least given the facts we’re privy to now. Obstructing justice are actions which literally thwart the investigation and/or prosecution of a crime. These would need to be *affirmative actions* such as hiding or destroying physical evidence, or knowingly providing false information *to law enforcement or others investigating a crime.* As has been stated repeatedly, the Laundries were under no obligation to assist an investigation - and that’s the difference. Failing to assist an investigation is different from thwarting an investigation - which a lot of people still don’t understand. So for example, when the Laundries found their son’s remains - they disclosed that information. Although Brian was in possession of the letter - because he had not “burned after reading” it - they did not steal, hide or destroy the letter. If they had, we’d have us some solid obstruction of justice. Truth be told, by the time Roberta probably wrote that letter, there was absolutely no way ANYONE would be going back to the crime scene to bury Gabby - that park was blanketed with searchers both on land and by air. So what purpose did the letter serve? Hear me out: I believe that Brian actually DID NOT tell anyone what he’d done to Gabby - and I highly doubt anyone in his family would have have asked him straight out if he killed her. As a parent, would you be comfortable asking that question - or hearing the likely answer? They may have asked if he knew where Gabby was or what happened to Gabby - but suspecting the truth like all the rest of us, I doubt they’d have pushed the issue if he shook his head or said he didn’t want to talk about it. I think there were elements of truth in Roberta’s affidavit about that letter being her effort at trying to connect with her son - I think she WAS - and I also think she sensed the time she’d have direct access her son was running perilously short. Knowing her son, Roberta surely knew her son was deeply disturbed - and his feelings about Gabbie were complex. Perhaps Roberta sensed that now that Gabbie was gone, her son had lost the main stabilizing force in his life - and without her, he’d have serious suicidal proclivities. A reasonably intelligent mother in that position wouldn’t corner her child by interrogating him - no, she’d have tread VERY gently. She needed to avoid saying outright, “Listen, Brian, I raised you. I know you. I know how bad your temper is, and I know what you’re capable of. We all lived together. You know how often I’ve seen you be abusive towards Gabbie and I believe she’s not alive - and it’s because of something you did. Roberta desperately needed to reassure Brian that notwithstanding anything he might have done, she still loved him and would move heaven and earth if she were capable of helping him - and my gut instinct is that the letter is Roberta’s effort at alluding to Brian that she knew in her heart of hearts that Brian was responsible for Gabbie’s disappearance and likely death - but regardless of what he did, she still loved him and always would. I know we’re not here to share our sympathies for the actions of Roberta Laundrie - but I will say that if I were in her shoes, it would come as a huge comfort to me that he had that letter with him when he killed himself. For what it’s worth - In a case where there are so many injustices and so little that the law provides by way of remedy, here’s where I’ve taken some small measure of satisfaction: That apart from killing sweet, beautiful, personable and precious Gabbie - that piece of sh!t Brian’s final insult to those who cared for him was to disregard his mother’s specific request that the letter be burned - for which she is now being publicly pilloried, ridiculed and humiliated. Perhaps THAT is the slap in the face more powerful than anything the law, the police, the FBI, the courts, and Petito/Schmidt family are able to dish out by way of restitution towards those parents and their lawyer ....morons who actually had the audacity to think that their self-serving public statements might come as comfort to the Petitos during a time that they were tormented over what might have happened to their angelic Gabrielle. //

My Mom is my best friend, I moved across the Country from her when I went to college. If I ever received a letter like this from her, I would be WEIRDED out. I don't believe a word out of his parents' mouth, I do not believe for a moment this was given to him BEFORE Brian and Gabby's trip. If it was, then it speaks to her belief he was capable of doing something along those lines. His parents should ABSOLUTELY be held accountable, if for nothing else, obstruction of justice.

If a son is just going on a trip, this is not the letter a mother would write. This was clearly written afterward. The drama and emotion are through the roof.

The letter doesn't prove anything. It doesn't say something like , "There's a shovel and plastic bags in the van. Use those to clean up your mess." His mom in her own weird way just professed to how much she loved him no matter what. It doesn't mean his parents knew about Gabby's death or not. Better evidence is needed. And it seems that if they had known, his mom would've gone out and buried the body herself. Then she may even have sent him to Cuba. None of that happened.

Why would you tell your son before he goes on a trip with his girlfriend, if you need help burying a body I will be there with a shovel and bags?,? Parents tell their children they love them unconditionally no matter what. But most meana is you make a mistake and end up killing someone and in jail you will help them coming clean and taking responsibility and living with the consequences and making amends. It's NOT telling them you will help them with getting away with murder and covering it up 🥴🥴🥴 Most parents would not do that

While she may not have been talking about burying Gabby's body.... It certainly helped explain the unhealthy relationship that allowed her son take no accountability, to devalue the woman he was with, encourage him to think that whatever he wants is okay and that is what selfish behavior would be supported. I would like to thank Ms Laundree tho, it has made me reevaluate the way I speak to my own grown children. While, my love for my daughter has encouraged me to raise her in a very bittersweet manner that always at the core insured I was raising a well-functioning adult. And any mother who's done this knows how self-sacrificial that is because we all want to baby our children. With any luck, our children get to live to a ripe old age that include many more adult years then childhood years. But as I just did a above I referred her as my daughter, my baby .. I still take too much credit, out of pride for her adult accomplishments. It's bc of this letter, in Reading how others heard it, can I came to this realization so thank you!

▶️ I don't buy the timeline whatsoever. Seems like a DESPERATE letter, written to a son, very possibly as he is packing up in the next room, and given to him, as he leaves to escape police. It is not logical, nor believable, that it is an old letter, that Brian finds and puts in his backpack, as he is hurrying to escape police. I believe Roberta may not have had confirmation of murder, but guessed it a possibility, as indicated in her letter. The letter itself, while DESPERATE, indicates a very DISFUNCTIONAL parental relationship, with no healthy boundaries, nor reasonable and healthy expectations of personal responsibility, from the son to the mother. She assures him, he merely need say "jump," and she will immediately respond with "how high?!" No questions asked. After all, her love for him surpasses all; he can do no wrong. This letter reveals so much, and indicates a true problematic source of tension between he and Gabby, full of unreasonable and very unhealthy expectations. That poor girl never had a chance.
