When you first hear about Laura Dekker and how she sailed around the world on her own when she was only 14 years old - it sounds just unbelievable. But after talking to her about her upbringing and all the influences in her early life, it makes perfect sense that she has become the person that she is today.
"I think I am really lucky to have found what I really want to do so early in life", Laura says. She was 7 when she had the first idea to embark on this great adventure. Laura describes how as a child we have a spark and an energy that we lose when we become adults. "As a child it is really simple, you don’t overthink it. You just decide, plan and do it." Her parents gave her the freedom to go her own path - also they were always less worried about her being alone on the open ocean than on land.
Today she tries to share her experience with others and to teach children more than what they can learn at school. Check out our interview to learn about Laura and her project.
