I went to an IB school in the US and my understanding is that the curriculum is lead by the IBO (organisation) with a headquater in Swizerland. We didn't have many students changing school during the semester. So I think the main purpose is to have high achademic standards available in any country which also allows you to go to university with an IB diploma in most countries without taking extra application tests. In Germany for example if you have the right combination of IB courses and grades, you are accepted with allgemeine Hochschulreife by the local Regierungspräsidium. I don't recommend parents to move their kids around though. They seem fine, but it really messes with you in a way that manifests later in life. Great to have her on the pod :)
@JimCullenАй бұрын
Yeah the IBO runs a school curriculum across all levels of schooling, primarily aimed at international schools, but some local schools use it too. There's the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) for ages 3-12 and 11-16, respectively. But what people _usually_ mean when they say "the IB" is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or IBDP, which is their curriculum for your final 2 years of school (ages 16-18, typically). IBDP is _particularly_ popular in higher-achieving schools because it's an infamously difficult programme that produces very well-rounded students, since you're forced to do a wide variety of subjects instead of only doing sciences or only doing arts, and you're required to do a variety extracurriculars under Creativity, Action, and Service.

Fantastic episode, I’ve loved Laura’s humor for a long time. Gone are the days that people openly identify with mainstream musicals like High School Musical and be proud of it.
@dariasmehАй бұрын
your theatricality, Gianmarco, really makes you stand out. Laura is right. It's the path you look back and say was just a resentment inducing waste of time, but it was a stepping stone in your journey to really hone your uniqueness and make you stand out amongst others, rather than 4 years to get noticed in some classes or get some degree.

Something the US does very well is public libraries. I have found most of the developed Western world does not have anywhere near the extensive network of libraries we have, and nowhere near the type of collections we have here. It’s an odd thing, but I lived in Paris for a year and was truly shocked that they had so few libraries with such a small inventory.
@KristineMaitlandАй бұрын
I would argue that Toronto 's public library system is one of the best in North America.
@janepappas1032Ай бұрын
@@KristineMaitland I’ll have to visit one of these days and take a look. I absolutely adore Montreal and Canada is indeed a nice mix of what I love about Europe and what I appreciate about North America. However, having lived many years in New York, I doubt almost any city could rival the New York library system.

I didn’t know that! I figured it’d be the opposite and other countries would just have massive, like beauty and the beast style librarys

Eh, I'm not sure about any Sicilian pictured with Mussolini. My grandparents lived in sicily during ww2 and Sicilians in general were very anti-Mussolini. Near the end of ww2, my Nonno was conscripted into the military and promptly deserted as soon as the US landed. He got an Italian Military pension to the day he died though. If anyone brought up Mussolini, his response was always that he was "sick in the head!" 😂
@FullMetalMachineАй бұрын
hi im for sure bringing the mood down but basically there's this sociological concept called "italiani brava gente" (italian good people) (it's also on english wikipedia!) which is a form of historical revisionism were we started telling ourselves in order to cope with the downfall of fascism and its war crimes that people "weren't actually that fascist" and actual fascists were an outlier, which is historically not true. not trying to discredit your granpa here (good for him if he saw through fascism right away) but most italians were fascist during that time including sicily and i don't think it does italy any favours to shy away from the past
@francescafay9452Ай бұрын
@@FullMetalMachine Sorry if I implied that he did it bravely or bragged about it. He didn't tell me about this until he was in his 90s, and said he hid in ditches from the Americans and Italians so he didn't get thrown in prison. I think he was embarrassed. He was extremely neurotic and scared easily...Laura wasn't lying about Italian dads! But their area (and a lot of Sicily) most certainly were not fans of Mussolini, this was also around the time the Sicilian independence movement was at its height. I don't know if it was for noble reasons, probably more self interest.
@maffa2849Ай бұрын
@@francescafay9452 the truth is quite boring actually. Italians were and still are quite apathetic, especially back then when "Italy" was still a very new concept to wrap one's head around with. Mussolini had been in charge for quite a long time, 20 years like, and as a populist he liked to take pics with people so the fact that people took pictures with him before wartime without more context doesnt specifically mean much except they weren't socialists... now: if they were involved as higherups in the fascist party (which was compulsory for all Italians to be part of btw) and/or being actively involved in wartime, now that's... uh... damning.

21:52 so true, I learned Spanish first at home and learned English at like 3yrs old and then learned French in college. I had a much easier time in my French class compared to other students because knowing Spanish helped a lot and even just already knowing how to think in another language helped so much. I also don’t remember learning English, I just absorbed it as a child and became fluent.

Laura is such an interesting person. Very worldly. Side note - I moved a fair bit as a kid, not nearly as much as Laura but to the other side of the world once. You sortnof feel from nowhere quite fully. I never resented it or felt i was missing anything. But was surprised that once i had kids, i felt a really strong desire to give them strong roots and a home base. Feel a deep sense of guilt thinking of moving them, even if i myself have itchy feet. Didn’t expect that honestly! TLDR once children are actually here, your reaction to things can surprise you 😅

1:19:49 But to be fair, _Agatha All Along_ (which is what you’re talking about) just has one song (so far, only 4 episodes out of 9 are released). The song plays a central role in the story but I definitely wouldn’t call the show a musical. But _Joker 2_ and that newer _Mean Girls_ movie and even _Wanka_ all tried to hide the fact they’re musicals. Gianmarco, don’t know if you’ll see this but apparently Joker’s songs don’t even move the plot forward as is standard; apparently the story comes to a grinding halt every time they sing. Can you believe that?

Ok so just a little about what they teach in German schools. Literally from elementary school. And they go in depth. They want to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. It’s something that every German is aware of and thinks about. Whenever I went to Germany, WWII came up. Though I think that’s pretty common in Europe in general since every person was affected. But yes. It’s taught early and continuously.
