That is Pete the deer, of Barnegat NJ. Born on March 19, 1935, orphaned in a forest fire. Then adopted by the Raymond Becket family. Pete was given to the Philadelphia Zoo in 1945. Years later when Mrs. Becket visited the zoo she called Pete's name. He would break from the pack and come put his nose through the bars and onto Mrs Becket's face. I Love Her Music!! Laura Veirs..

@KillerInstinct2006 . I read an interview w/Laura Veirs, the song is about relationships and endings, doesn't mention drug problem. She uses imagery from nature. Of course it can be interpreted any way you want.

@tiggger1213 "I can see your tracks" Tracks or trackmarks are what they call the needle marks left over from when someone shoots up heroin or meth. "I can smell the smoke" another blatantly obvious drug reference. Probably referring to smoking crack or meth. The whole song is about how someone's drug problem effects the narrator of the song and how she prays that, that person will get better.

That was 1938. The NJ law addressing leaving an unattended dear outside Abramowitz Department store did become in effect until 1945. By then, Pete the deer, was living at the Philadelphia Zoo. True Story!!

@tiggger1213 Yeah the song is about relationships and the pain and hardship one deals with, because of another's drug problem. This song is 100% obviously about one's drug addiction. It would be impossible for all of the references to be coincidental.
