Love your videos and books. I am a silversmith, but am new to soft soldering. I have learned a lot from you, many thanks! But if I may offer one little tip in return... When you are hammering metal on a bench block, hold the end of the piece OFF the edge of the block. Less likely to hammer your fingers! 😉

Great tip, thanks!

Laura that is beautiful. I did something like that with a labradorite crystal and put the pieces around it. Love to solder..

Hi, if I don't need to create new shapes, just "connect" jewelry parts (pendats, cabochons in metal casing) I already have, can I use this method? What metals can I work with, and which are not for this method? Thank you.
@LauraBethLoveАй бұрын
It depends on the metal, you should be able to with copper or silver

Thank you for the inspiring video! I have tried this however the solder doesn’t stick to the copper wire, wondering if there’s any trick higher temperature? Stronger flux or I need to use specific copper wire
@LauraBethLoveАй бұрын
Try cleaning the wire. Make sure it is actual copper wire. Make sure it is not coated with something such as plastic. Clean the copper well with steel wool before soldering. Allow the copper to heat up for a moment to allow the solder to adhere. Make sure you are using fresh flux. Try a higher temp.
@CN-yx9hwАй бұрын
@LauraBethLove thank you for your instant reply! May I know what you mean fresh flux? Thank you.

hi thanks for the video!! how come you used a copper wire instead of a silver? im new to soldering, just wanted to know the info about it
@LauraBethLove5 ай бұрын
I use both and for most tutorials and experimenting I use copper because its cheaper to work with
@Alteredgrace Жыл бұрын
on the silver wire, is that craft wire or a special wire like tin or sterling?

Thanks for the video. Beautiful piece. What temperature do you set your iron at to melt your Silvergleem?
@LauraBethLove Жыл бұрын
It’s different for every person you just have to experiment with your iron. They are not all the same.

hi! i just wanna try soldering. Do you think it is okay to start soldering without mask? if i like it i will buy a mask later
@LauraBethLove Жыл бұрын
You certainly should use some type of protection, even if its just soldering outside or near a window with a fan but I always recommend a fume extractor and a mask.
@katleach23822 жыл бұрын
do you just open a window when soldering, or also use an extractor/regular fan? thanks!

I’m curious would the solder ever tarnish?
@LauraBethLove Жыл бұрын
Over time from being exposed to air, yes, just like sterling or copper it will eventually tarnish and need a quick polish.
