I’m a 73 year old farm kid and retired CPA. I’ve helped many small business owners. Thank you for this video. Thank you for your love of farming. Thank you for taking on something very few will do. Hearing the cost of your farm operation will frighten most people to death. Your courage is what makes America great. I’m sure some people watch your videos thinking how easy she has it. “She’s just a farmer”. Ask them if they want to borrow $1,000,000, pray for good weather, pray to stay healthy, work 4,000+ hours a year in the hope of having enough profit to do it all over again next year. Don’t ever apologize for letting the stress out. If someone criticizes you for it simple tell them to go to hell. God Bless!

I too was raised on a farm along time ago . We farmed with horses and worked from sun up to sun down . We never had much but we had a love of family and the land and this is something that can’t always be explained to some but this video brought back so many good memories and with it some tears of things passed . I still try to end each day looking out over the fields as the sun sets and give thanks for a life well lived . The best to you and Grant in your journey making your own awesome memories

Congratulations on being able to pursue your dream. I've heard that the way to end up with a small fortune farming is to start with a large fortune. You and Grant are pouring your heart and soul into this, and I wish you both a healthy and prosperous 2023.

Laura congratulations on your KZbin channel. I’m an ex farmer based in the UK which is a totally different physical environment to North America. But there are similarities. The margins were always tight and still are today as friends tell me. I farmed full time in the 70’s when we had rampant inflation. Prices of fertiliser and other inputs just took off. Diversity saved the day for me, despite the stress of doing so. As you mentioned in your video today farmers today are doing other things and that’s what I did in the 70’s. Stress is an attitude of mind and clear thought and pragmatism I found to be the best way of dealing with stress. When I was in my teenage years an old timer told me if you want to farm always have something to sell and if you have nothing to sell have a service you can provide. You have ticked both boxes although you may not realise it yet. You have your KZbin channel which is excellent (a service) and your cattle which you could always sell if you need to. View livestock as dollars on legs and you won’t go far wrong. In my case it was pound notes. The timing of any sale may not be ideal but when you need it cash always has a value. You have Grant who is obviously interested in farming and you should share any stress with him as he should with you. Lots of luck and my very best wishes to you both tomorrow is always another day and bad days will just disappear from memory. 😅😅😅

Laura I just watched your video spelling out all your expenses. As a farmer myself and basically on the other end of my career path from you I'm 61, I understand where you're coming from. One thing you and Grant have going for you is your youth and the fact that I think both of you are smart in that you're watching your expenses watching your input and your outgo and placing your dollars where they need to be. You're smart to buy ground you can buy new equipment all the time or at least what you need but when it comes to dirt God's not making any more of that. I wish you the best admire the two of you for what you're doing if we didn't have people from your generation following mine we'd be in a world of hurt.

However, I think it is the most beautiful activity in the world. I wish you success in everything you do, good health and courage. I found myself in this video. You are what has made America great. Being an avid fan of anything mechanical, you have also opened my eyes to the intricacies of that aspect of farming. May God always bless your endeavors with energy, passion and grace as you continue this noble profession!🙏🏼😃👍🏼

Wow, you showed a lot of courage, Laura, in opening your self and your finances to that extent. Big virtual hug from me and many many others who watch your channel! We are all proud of you. I grew up on a farm in Colorado and watched my dad struggle with the financial stress of farming - ever rising costs, uncertain weather, and crop prices that always seem to drop at harvest time. I went on to run several high tech businesses - and none of them were as stressful as farming. Keep the faith, keep moving forward, and best wishes to you and Grant from an appreciative fan. 😉

WOW, you are one amazing young woman, Laura. I know that the costs in farming are outrageous, but necessary if you are to make money. The hardest aspect of it for me is, someone else sets what all your expenses are going to cost, you just have to decide hoe much of each individual one to partake of. Then you have to hope the weather co-operates so you get good yields, then your buyers tell you what they will give you for your product. Not fai, you take all the risk for a little return and immense personal satisfaction of a well done job. I thank you, Laura, Grant and all farmers around the world who help keep the wolf away from my door.

We own a small business as well in grading and landscaping and the growth over the last 3 years of getting started has been monumental with all the overhead. We’re honored that through it all our growth has afforded us a much different life than previous and with proper management we will live a better and rewarding life from the struggle but that struggle is what makes us the true Americans that we all strive to be. A little bit of fear is good it keeps you frugal and always looking to where you can cut expenses and increase sales. The main thing is to cash flow any new growth{except for mortgages} and to grow slowly. If the company doesn't have the cash to buy it outright then you don't buy it. The main reason businesses fail is they lose their a55 on inventory and/or vehicle/equipment loans.

Scary level of financing. I have 10 acres rough mt land. I planted most of it with trees after draining and improving it, and just grow some veg/eggs, some to sell, and do about 3 months outside work wire fencing and stone walling for wealthy land owners. (How much does a wire fencer make there? I saw some wire fencing in the US on my travels, not bad. They tended to be double height with box strainers every 50 to 100 yards) Have guests in the Summer, have produced about 1000t of timber. Kind of the opposite end of the scale. Your operation is obviously more useful, as it feeds a lot of people. This should be recognised by the state, you shouldn’t have to gamble on good weather etc each year after what looks like a very busy year. The complacent, spoilt, corrupt politicians are no doubt an extra burden to honest, energetic, gutsy young folks. I think you are a fine example to all.❤

Dear Laura and Grant, Greetings from Australia. I'm a 66 year old Country Boy, my Father managed a large sheep and cattle grazing property for a Pastoral Company, and my Maternal Grandparents were into cropping, with some sheep and cattle. I've been following your channel for some years now. It's very interesting to see how farming operations are carried on elsewhere. It was phenomenally brave of you to put yourself out there and give us a breakdown of your numbers. The raw emotion engendered just made it all the more forceful. Don't ever apologise for letting the stress out, we have your back! I salute You and Grant and pray for your continued survival. I know whereof you speak, and I concur with every other positive comment on here. One of my cousins married a Farmer, and to sow 5000 acres of Barley, cost them $100,000 for diesel!! When I was a lad, 45% of the Australian population was rural based. Now it is only 12%, and still shrinking. That Video, "A Farmers Last Ride" was especially poignant and tasteful. God Bless You, Grant, and all your immediate, and extended Family.

Amen to that Aaron...the Aussie farmers endure so much in adverse weather...makes me wonder how they make ends meet at times...but through tenacity and the good old Aussie spirit...they somehow manage...and sadly it's a disappearing industry these days...whether it's sheep, cattle, crops or whatever the commodity, it's certainly an industry that we all must be thankful for for those who do go through the processes year after year to provide to the greater masses, and one that I personally couldn't be more respectful of those that farm this great land for what they endure.

Laura - you and Grant are doing a great service for your community, Town, Nebraska, and the rest of us. Fantastic job and I was generally surprised at the amount of money it takes to Farm. You are blessed in so many ways. Keep up the good work and I love your videos.

Every farmer I know has almost this same level of dedication to their craft. Without it, what would be the point? A very touching video, Laura. Congratulations to you and Grant on being able to buy your place.

I'm self employed as well. I have nothing to do with farming but do comprehend the overall concept of what you're saying. I stumbled upon your channel during the lock-down as I was just looking for something informative and entertaining that was out of my mindset. Needess to say, you (and your entire family ) have fulfilled everything I was looking for and then some. I applaud your business acumen and work ethic. Congrats to you and Grant. Keep up the good work.

I'm a 15 year old male who currently lives in the city. I've always been interested in agriculture and heavy machinery/farm equipment. I know how hard you farmers work and after watching a bunch of videos of the reality of farming my respect for y'all has skyrocketed. God bless

Wow! I’m 68 and almost lost for words, originally from New Zealand but have spent over 40 years living in Canada. You are the most amazing young woman I’ve been able to meet, or a least on your KZbin channel. The courage you exude is simply inspirational, for you and your husband to take on such a challenging life and stressful vocation is incredible. I hope your videos can be shown in schools and communities around the world, these are incredible tools for all people to learn what it takes to tackle such a tuff career. Thank you for sharing this new journey, you and your husband are starting. God Bless.🇳🇿🇨🇦

Congrats on purchasing your acreage. I know that not having to rent will make it less expensive but comes with it's own new set of challenges but I know you and Grant will tackle it like you do everything else. Happy for you guys to continue farming and making content. It's entertainment for us but I know it's real life for you guys and I appreciate that you bring us along for the ride. Thank you!

Love this purchase, guys! Congratulations!!! Strive to become debt free if you guys are not already. It’ll change your life! I love your channel! I spent a lot of time in Nebraska in the years past and always enjoyed the view of those massive fields. What I use to do for a living afforded me the luxury of seeing many roads across America. Your area is beautiful! It has been years since I’ve been there but I’m sure it’s as pretty as it was when I drove those rural roads. Thanks for sharing y’all’s lives with us - know it’s not easy. Remain encouraged, love each other, work hard, and above all - trust the Lord and His guidance. Love you guys. All the best! ~ Chris

This is a big problem with farming a lot of people don't understand. It's a vitally important industry that requires long hours, hard work, and operates with razor thin margins, yet the costs involved are astronomical and there are people out there actively attacking this industry. Your emotions are perfectly understandable, Laura, and your channel goes a long way to lift the veil on the work and dedication that goes into what you do. God bless.

It is so easy for some to look at everything you have and make statements like "Well hey they have a lot of money to have all of those toys!?" Truth is it takes a LOT of work and LONG hours to get what you have and the ones thinking you have it easy probably do not know what HARD ACTUAL WORK is!!!? You have shown in this video yet again that you guys are completely normal and you have emotions just like the rest of us and I think that is a good thing. Thank you for sharing something personal with your fans.

Liked this comment , and all the sentiments. I wished to be a farmer once. Certainly you have expounded the 'risk' you take on. I have turned from a secure government job here in Australia, Rangering 26 years and Teaching 5 years, to running my own small, small business now 7 years. I have very slowly and carefully taken on financial risk, but it seems you have soo much to deal with in this area. You are both truly brave. Graeme Horne

Having witnessed my Parents and Grandparents going through the stress every year of making decisions in the spring and praying those were right, I understand what Farmers go through. It takes a lot of courage to farm I support and respect all Farmers. Thank you for this video. I hope it gives others a true understanding of what it takes to farm. My Parents both had full-time jobs in the winter to keep the farm going. Hope you and Grant makes some wonderful memories at the new home!!! God bless and good luck. 🙏🙏🙏

Most people have No idea what pressure comes with running a successful small business. Most get nervous when they take out a 35K loan for a car or truck. Try risking it all every year like you guys and many other farmers do. It isn't for the faint of heart. Both you and Grant make me proud of our younger generation who often get a bad rap. There are good and bad in every generation and you two are some of the best. Keep it up and never ever apologize for letting your emotions come out. It shows how much this all means to you both farming and YouTubing.

You're right about small businesses. My parents started one back in the 80's and it was hit-or-miss for probably the first six years. Eventually they were able to expand and grow, but there were some tough times to get there. I remember one Christmas where they were so broke we literally got nothing except what the grandparents bought that year. The kids understood the seriousness of it, and if nothing else it brought us closer together.

Such an honest and pure video, showing your emotions about this subject! Yet, despite all of the stress, you are able to stay positive and create all this social media content, with a big smile on your face. Respect! I wish you guys the world and hope that enough money will come in to be able to purchase the land, or at least all of the machines. In Holland all of the farmers are having stress as well and especially now with the government wanting to get rid of 50% of the farmers. A lot of people doesn't realize how hard it is to farm and to be a farmer and don't appreciate enough that they are responsible for the food we are eating every day. I'll continue to watch your videos and again: I wish you guys the best of luck and keep up the good work!
