So true. Laura sets herself a very punishing schedule. Sixteen days continuous work - no wonder a relatively small hiccough feels like a major derailment. Human bodies need rest. Humans also need play. Laura, go and play! Pootle around, make little, inconsequential things. Allow your mind and body to rest. Allow yourself time to read, to draw, to watch youtube, videocall your family. When you are ready, you'll be able to jump back in, and make the big things too.

Hey Laura this is your 68 year old Uncle Jim in California. Everybody has a breaking point, some higher, some lower. The ones with a high breaking point just crash a little harder. My free advice is walk away for a while and do some things just for you. Go fishing, go camping, go roller/ice skating with friends. Whatever, just fun stuff without goals or deadlines and get your life back on center. But as an example I've had a little fun recreational project simmering on the back of the stove for several months while I took care of the "IMPORTANT STUFF!". This morning I started actual plans and I don't have the right tools/experience to do it so I just dropped the idea. Remember no goals or deadlines! It's taken me a long time to learn the signs that I'm about to crash and burn, it's time to change my course. A little shortcut to getting centered again is to help someone else with something. Uncle Jim.

Wish, at 58, I had headed my gut more, So often I have felt a job or situation to be difficult and problematic and then my response has been that it is my responsibility to work harder and try more to fix that somehow. After finally doing this in a situation that almost destroyed me, I am trying to retrain myself to heed these intuitions and not to overrule them with my head and sense of duty. So glad Laura is much smarter than I.

Youngest post yet at 35, but I will say the past 5 to 8 years, I've had to really learn this for myself. Resting and enjoying the life that's yours, the only one you get... it's not worth punishing yourself to deny that in order to garner the approval of a select few "friends" or "family" that don't want that for you. Sometimes that includes yourself! Never be ashamed of the bubbles you blow, for they are yours and no one can take that away.

I love how you “needing a break” is a total of 7 days away from a gargantuan project that was supposed to be a “lipstick rehab” but turned into a 2 year+ tear down and totally rehab that includes a series of crash courses in every aspect from the structure to the finishes…. I’m glad you’re catching it before it makes you start to absolutely dread going through that door everyday. It’s a makers vacation… “Im going to spend a week in my shop building something else…. To clear my mind” Love it!!! I really hope it helps you ease the pressure and look forward to seeing what you have in store for the next video 😊 thanks for sharing.

I was here before the premiere and there were some pretty nasty comments when noone had even seen the video yet. I just don't get it. I work in a high stress job and there are days were I just need a break. Not because I don't like my job or because it's not right for me, but because sometimes pushing through is pushing too far and it is so important to recognize when you hit that point and step back, because that's the only way to make it sustainable. I commend you for doing that. It is a very important skill.

Laura, I think that KZbin is completely saturated with unrealistic content about projects that are carefully edited to disguise what it really takes to do them. All those videos about "novice" builders that single handedly or with a spouse, throw together a project that is flawless. I've been designing, building, repairing stuff my whole life and I think all that content gives people false ideas about the stresses and sometimes heartbreak involved in building anything. Thank you for being up front and honest. Spot on decision to put your house on the back burner, and don't assign yourself a deadline to get back at it. I'm sure your viewers understand and will happily wait for you!

We see 'Super-human Laura' every week. Today we saw 'Super-smart Laura'. Everyone has their limits. The smart thing is to recognise that are approaching yours (and also to recognise that most of us would have hit that wall far sooner!) I'm pretty sure that most of us who follow you would say the same - Take some time to do what YOU want to do. The house isn't going away. It will wait. We are not going away. We will wait too. You are no use to yourself or your family (or us for that matter!) if you don't look after yourself as number 1 priority. So do that please :)))x

I'm an Industrial Design student from New Zealand, and I've been watching your house videos religiously Laura! It's true that I come and watch them for the creative inspiration and to look up to your immense drive in the face of seemingly relentless and unfair adversity. I've had some big struggles of my own in the last few years with depression and anxiety, and it's been a huge help for me to watch you and laugh with you and see you overcome things like you're talking about. But it's also amazing and hugely refreshing to see such a hero of mine take a step back and make the smart, often stigmatised decision to recognise that some things are more important than ALWAYS 'pushing through' and 'overcoming'. I don't usually comment on youtube videos but you're a huge inspiration to me and many others Laura, and I hope you keep doing what you're doing, but I hope you keep doing it only while prioritising yourself and your health and family

Im here for all your fun projects and whatever you throw our way. It also is nice to see this in some way? Like I have a hard time putting pressure on myself and keeping going without recognising the burnout point until i cant go any more. And its comforting and helpful to see someone else hit the point and actually stop with healthy boundaries. It gives me an example of what that looks like and how to help myself in a similar way. And is as helpful to me as the videos where you make a cool thing (or house) with reclaimed materials in a way that showes me an example of how i coukd do similar. Not sure if that made sense. But im glad and i support ur decision. Excited to see the small projects and things coming this way.

@@thevillage38 I lived half the year in Australia and half in Canada. It has nothing to do with age. It's just a tough process to pick up and restart essentially two entire lives in each place. Friends, hobby, work etc etc. It's brutal. Especially depending on your circadian rhythm and the timezones you flip flop between

@@msmknz @cdibona assumed 'Splitting Time Zones' was her reason for saying 'I hit my breaking point',i'm guessing it's work related,as she's still a young woman, her mind and body should not Fall apart, just because she chooses to live on two continents, she doesn't share how long she's been doing that, she's married and other than lesbians have a history of renting u hauls after the first date,i'll guess this has been going on for quite some time. Laura uses titles that get people guessing worst case, she's quit YT, only live in LA,now 'Breaking Point'.Other than being overly invested in a stranger, who cares?

I love watching your videos in part because you overcome difficult challenges. This video is not different and not a disappointment. Feeling exhausted and burnt out is one of the most difficult Challenges, just as actually admitting it is. Thank you for a great video as always.

It takes longer to recover from burnout than to get it in the first place. I'm glad that you recognize the signs and are actively taking a break. Toxic positivity is when you pretend to be okay when you're not. We are inspired by your actual emotional flexibility and ability to pivot and recover. But it's not bad to remind us that it's okay to be human and take a break, too. That said, if this is your villain origin story, I'm going to recognize you under the anteater mask.

I get it. I purchased an older house a year ago...unfortunately at a low point in my life. It needed a lot of work. I dived right in. Then I burned out. Work and anxiety - the anxiety won. Getting healthier now. Take the time off.

Thats sooo important that you realize that you are overwhelmed and take the steps to get some rest and distance and most important time for yourself! And even more important that you share this feeling/emotions in this world where sometimes only husseling and overworking seems like a legit option for life. Thank you for showing yourself so openly and vulnerable

I have been uplifted by your recorded positivity, yes. But at the same time, I am not surprised and very much appreciate that you have the courage to release this video this week! Taking care of yourself, realizing you need to downshift before you hit rock bottom, absolutely is about overcoming challenges! It would be awful to resent work done on the house; negative vibes might be absorbed into the walls. Thank you so much about making _real_ content.

Laura, we all have breaking points. Some of us realize that; some do not. But a breaking point does not mean the end, rather it may signify a change. Though changes may be scary, this will pass, and you will always be one who creates, lives, and loves. Please do not worry. A new phase will carry you forward.

So, for years you’ve shown us you have strength and fortitude; that’s very nice. Perhaps it is time to embrace the notion you don’t have to power through. I’m 63 now and used to be like you. But when I made year 40 or so, I realized I wasn’t young enough to push through everything. And when I did, it took away my joy of doing and took too long to recover. Stay in THE MOMENTS. You have a family and work and travel and film and KZbin. Stop! Do what you love so you can love what you do! Just a little advice from an Auntie.

Oh Laura, I care! I have had a similar life trajectory to yours ( although if was quite a few years ago! ) and I completely understand your need for a break . I have been wondering how buoy were able to keep up your pace and worrying that you would reach a point where it was all just a little too much. Good for you for seeing it and also acting on it. You are just solving another problem in your own beautiful and uniquely pragmatic way. Keep on taking good care of yourself and your new family. I will happily wait for your next video no matter how long a break you need!

I appreciate you're taking the time to make this video, and such a great leap to notice the pattern of pre-burnout over a project. The moment you were listing out the prospect of things you'd do for a month in "Ready for Phase 2" before flying back to LA and back to Germany again in October, safe to say i was "skeptical", not about your capability to get things done, but about the possibilities that could go wrong in the process, knowing well that even in the beginning the house was not prepared to be settled in for. Though seeing you have hopes to get it done no matter what, using and utilizing all resources around was wonderful to watch. I can only imagine having to work through pre-existing double jobs, it's physically and mentally exhausting, not to count the back and forth flying. I am so glad that you've decided to take a break from working on the house. It's a perfect time to refresh your mind and rejuvenate. May you regain some strength and insight. We're loving your contents as much as you love making it. You're amazing, Laura. You got this. We're here for you.

I think you'll find a lot of us do care, and the biggest challenge you're overcoming is being honest about how you feel. I think this is one of my favourite of your videos because of you recognising and telling us all, that you're prioritising your wellbeing. That's a powerful message to share, and pretty sure everyone will support you with it. ❤

I empathize completely. I’ve been working on a house remodel for a few years (by myself) while I travel back and forth from another dwelling. It’s not hyperbole to say that every project in this house has some wrench thrown into the mix - almost no job goes smoothly. There have been many points where my progress is so thwarted, I’ve been frustrated to the point of burning tears. Then there are the usual maintenance issues and appliances breaking down and unexpected vehicle repairs - all demanding my limited time. I even coined a phrase: Every job you think will take five minutes, ends up taking five hours. I hit my wall. I was burnt out, disgusted, frustrated, miserable from working six long days a week for years. So I temporarily changed course and decided to work only on things that I enjoy for a period of time: carving, drawing, restoring vintage tools and wood planes, and I’ve always wanted to make a shaving horse to facilitate my ultimate goal of making a Windsor chair. It did the trick and saved my sanity. Find the things you enjoy doing and do them.

Alles Liebe!
