Notes about this video: 1. In an ideal world, I would have had a 'uniform' that was made of natural material like wool, but 1). I'm not made of money, and 2). I wanted something easy to wash and dry. 2. I also got a 'summer uniform top' (sleeveless cropped tee) but it was never warm enough to wear it.

I love uniforms. When I quit working at a place where a uniform was required I became very unhappy with my wardrobe. I do not like having a lot of clothes. I just want to grab and go. My ideal wardrobe is 3 uniforms, 3 day outfits, 1 grunge work outfit, and 3 church outfits

A friend of mine had a slightly different approach to this which could suit your personality more. She had a Monday outfit, Tuesday outfit, Wednesday etc. so she didn’t have to think what she would wear that day, but it was always different from the day before and the day after. From memory there was nothing set for the weekend.

I love choosing what to wear in the morning: what style to adopt, what colours to suit my mood. I love clothes, so to me it's not time wasted. It's time spent doing something I enjoy. And I definitely notice what other people wear. Not in a critical way, more appreciating different styles and aesthetics. I can see the appeal of the simplicity, but def not for me. This was a really interesting experiment. Thanks for putting it out there in the world ❤ xx

I've got a friend who kind of does the opposite, she has specific out of the house outfits and then wears whatever at home. The same dress for all celebrations or important events for 12 years so far, it almost looks like she's a time traveler when you look at all our photos hahaa. I find it strangely comforting when she wears her 'fancy' clothes to things, kind of signifies the specialness of the event. Plus whenever I see someone else with a similar style or the same colour I'm reminded of her which is lovely.

Charlie: "Well, of course black coat is best! Everyone knows that!" As I get older, comfort in what I wear definitely gets more important. For some time I've mostly opted for yoga clothes at home, and some outside of the house if they look alright. Comfortable and allow movement! I might make some myself so they fit right and look the way I want them to. I'm also one of those who isn't that fond of picking clothes in the morning, so I'd think a capsule wardrobe would be most effective. I'll probably go for that from here.

I don't have just one uniform but if I find clothes that I like I often buy several pieces of it in similar colors. And as for the question about you wearing black in the videos, I don't mind it at all. I'd love to try it. Perhaps an expansion of this could be to try a uniform in "your" colours (after doing the skin tone colour analysis) and assess whether they actually affect your mood. A colleague of mine, knowing her colour palette, would buy only clothes in that palette which she already knew would match and look good on her and dress in the morning in two seconds with her eyes closed, removing decision fatigue. Perhaps an idea for another video??

Your experiment was so timely, as I've been thinking more about the need for a uniform per se for work to simplify my life, to save money and be more environmentally responsible. I lean towards black anyway and I live near NYC so black as a color choice is often seen as sophisticated and classy. I'm also doing "Swedish death cleaning" to make it easier for my family to sort through my stuff when I pass whole also experiencing the benefit of greater simplicity. Re: the questions you pose, I love how your experiments go beyond whether something works or not; rather you poke us with bigger and more thoughtful questions about one's choices. I agree with you about how men and women are socialized about clothing choices and perceptions f those choices. However, I'm intrigued with how gender expression hads been upended (in a good way) about how people can dress. Of course, this isn't new and often culturally bound; still, it's interesting to think about and perhaps will give us more freedom (?) Thanks again for another great video! And, no judgment at all - frankly, didn't even notice and not boring at all!

I've been doing this for about a decade. It's so freeing to not have to worry about what you're going to wear every day. I have one style of pants for spring/summer, and another style for fall/winter. Same goes for tops, long sleeve and short sleeve. I buy them in every color (that looks good on me) from L.L. Bean, and when something wears out, it is easily replaceable because they always make the same styles.

What I like about this, and what your video made me realise, is that now you have an outfit (or a set of outfits) that you can just go with on the days that you don’t care, don’t have much time, etc. But that also makes it very clear when you do really feel like wearing a particular outfit/colour, it’s like a clear signal in your brain: oh yes, this dress that I love, really want to wear that today. and that now also does not require much energy (except if that dress wouldn’t be practical in which case you can go back to the uniform). So basically it makes the whole process of getting dressed much easier, even on days were you don’t actually end up wearing the uniform.

I suppose that is the concept behind many work and school uniforms, removing the thinking part and simplifying as well as create visual homogeneity. I didn’t notice you were wearing the same black outfit in your last videos, what stands out is your beautiful face and your personality, it doesn’t matter what you wear. Also a pattern is easy to notice if it repeats itself, but not black

My late husband had a "uniform" that worked for him when we lived in the Yucatan. Basically beige slacks and a guayabera shirt ( you may know it as a Mexican wedding shirt). It worked for every occasion depending upon how nice the shirt was. He was colorblind so he didn't have to worry about the colors matching. I have worked jobs with uniforms and I like it for work, it makes things simple in the morning. However, now that I am retired, I really enjoy picking my outfit for the day. I do agree that most people don't notice what you are wearing on a daily basis or even care.

Ive been only buying two new pants and four shirts for everyday wearing with an additional shirt and pants for going to the shop each year for the past eight years. I am a housewife and wear a apron over my clothes. My aprons are home made. The trick is to buy good quality 100% cotton or linen when you buy clothes or fabric and to handwash these items. During the winter months I alternate two jackets and a sweater that is over 10 years old. I also wear the previous year's pants and shirts when I attend to my vegetable garden in order to make my clothes last long enough before the next purchase.

Decision fatigue is Real! For my working "uniform'' I chose half a dozen jumpers ( in the UK you call them pinafores) in cheerful prints and half a dozen blouses to mix and match with them, also in prints. It's colorful, the prints hide spills really well, which is vital because the job is messy. Since everything goes together I don't have to think first thing in the morning.

I loved this experiment! But I don’t think all black all the time is sustainable 😂 for many of the reasons you mention in the video. I basically do a variation of this by using a “capsule wardrobe” which might be a fun experiment for another video for you. Basically you buy about ~10 clothing items that can be mixed and matched well and you only wear those. This cuts down on the selection paralysis of a giant wardrobe bc you only have a few tops and bottoms to choose from, but I’ve found it kinda boosts creativity bc it’s like how can I combine these into different outfits I like.

Hi Laura! This video is the first of yours that I've seen. The outfit you've chosen lends a chic, professional, and bad-ass vibe, in my opinion. I believe it is due to the unique tailoring and cut of your pants and shirts as well as the sharp contrast of the black against your skin tone. All in all, I enjoyed this video thoroughly. I think adding a smaller and larger cut of the same shirt would have spiced things up for me if I did this challenge. Switching up accessories, hairstyles, and makeup was also fun to see! I'm curious that you chose solid black when you usually wear patterns and colours. Now at the end, I see you stayed with the same style but added colour back in. Perfect solution! A few years ago, I pared my wardrobe back to all blues and whites. Blue being my favourite colour. And I limit myself to 3 of each piece - slacks, skirts, tops, t shirts, etc. So my wardrobe is contained yet has variety. I alternate between blue bottom/white top and white top/blue bottom in winter/summer. Since I started doing this maybe 5 years ago, exactly 2 people have commented on my blue tops - both were men in the progressive circle at rock n roll dancing. One was when I switched from blue on top to white on top (Where's your blue top?) and the other commented when I wore a new patterned blue and white top rather than solid blue. I just laughed. Honestly, it was the first time in my life I didn't feel invisible. Maybe the blue is more flattering to my skin tone than white. Who knows?! Dancing has taught me that no one is paying as much attention to me (my dancing skills, my clothes, where I live, what I drive, etc) as I am.

This falls along the line of most of us having a finite amount of (creative) mental energy that can be expended each day - and every decision draws from that finite pool, leaving less for the more important works. I've seen various versions of this - one person had the same breakfast every day for years and I have a story of a friend's dad - an engineer who retired and did not want to put on weight. So he calculated his energy needs and designed a set of meals around that, that he has every day. I can see having some kind of uniform to get you into a working mindset is useful - so long as there is the balance of having a non-work clothes where you can put work behind you or show your personality. The other line is an experiment on what other people think/ notice - with the answer often being "not much". We had a local, male, morning TV host who wore the same suit every day for a year - in a protest against some of the comments his female co-hosts received about what they wore - and no-one noticed. (LOL) On that - I can't say I really noticed your all-black phase. I know I saw it - but it wasn't something that I thought about. Likely because I'm a clueless male - but I also used to have a copy of a quote in my work area saying " a clean desk is the sign of a cluttered mind" and I'm a firm believer of that.

At a previous job I cycled to work, the ride wasn't strenuous so I didn't need a dedicated outfit, so I just wore my work clothes. Realistically that meant I had to wear trousers as dresses or skirts weren't practical for me. I had three trousers (two black one blue) and a range of very similar in style blouses (all be it different colours) and three jumpers. I knew that whatever I grabbed would look fine together and would be work appropriate. Honestly, it was so relaxing not to have to think about what to pick as an outfit in the morning because no matter what combo I chose, it always worked. I miss that and now I'm thinking I might gently nudge my wardrobe back in the direction

I also found a multi-colored stripe sweater (jumper) that goes with black trousers, and bought multiples, so I still have a uniform that works for any activity and includes color. I have yet to find a striped tank top/singlet for summer wear that I can get multiples of, and I've learned how to knit them, might get around to knitting several. That's a long-term project!

I think your all black choice looks smart so I wouldn't think twice about seeing that in a video. Because you asked, personally I think the fact that it is a collared shirt vs a tshirt makes me think you look "fancier" or "professional". Recently I'd decided for myself to have seven outfits each season for work that I will just rotate - not mix and match because that is still thinking, but just a rotation of seven outfits and this has reduced the thinking fatigue, i just pick the next one in rotation and go. It allows me to vary up my clothing without any decision fatigue.

I put together more or less a capsule wardrobe for my husband for work. A few pairs of nice pants, and several short sleeved work shirts, and several long sleeved work shirts. They make lots of different combinations, but all work together. He still has to pick clothes, but it's a lot easier. He wears mainly t shirts and jeans otherwise.

In my tribe people wear the same fabric for a year but in different designs when they mourn and have a big celebration when they stop to signify the end of mourning. I've never thought of how much of themselves they sacrifice.

You are SOOO the best, Laura! I can't know of course if this is the real you - but it feels real to me and I feel honored to be let into your life! I chose a pair of black wide-leg pants and a black mock turtleneck blouse/top in 1986 (!!) YES!! and have been wearing some variation of that forever. I feel comfortable (and slim) in black but love best that I don't have to think about what to put on. I have maybe 3 pieces in prints (jungle prints) that I wear over the black pieces every once in a while. Love my style; LOVE yours! ps - did you find Halara stood up to that rigor - many washings etc?

My wardrobe is minimal because I hate buying clothes and have limited funds at the moment so I don't wear a uniform per se but there's very little variety - I do like the fact of spending little time choosing what to wear simply because there's so little to choose from. Obviously, you didn't have to make the experiment quite so strict in that you could have just worn the uniform five days instead of seven and allowed different clothes going out but I guess it's kind of a good challenge to go all in and congratulations for sticking it out. Even if you didn't make it easier by replicating the uniform in different colours, one thing you could have also done after the experiment is wear the black uniform when you couldn't be bothered thinking about what to wear and not wear it when you could. I think clothes do reflect your personality so it's good to combine being able to do that with a setup that reduces time worrying about what to wear.

Really enjoyed that. There is probably sense to the final verdict. Of mix and match outfits. Some people are gifted at buying outfits. Where I only buy an item of clothes. My mother always buys her jumper and tip together to match a specific pants. It's something I must do.

I have been in the position of wearing black for work , the trick to ringing in the changes is accessories. Scalfs ,shawls and ties bring a nice bit of colour, necklaces and other jewellery add character and on a plain background can afford to be a little more bold than you would normally wear .

I totally understand you wanting to experiment: I rotate between 5 pairs of trousers, 5 tees and a couple of cardigans and sweatshirt. They all mix and match like a charm, so no worries there. I would however NEVER go all black for 100 days. You made it so hard for yourself!

I have heavily minimised my wardrobe over the past few years. I live rurally and work from home (we have the same Woolpower zipneck, Laura, but mine is red). In cold weather I wear black Rohan Troggings, black trainers, a merino top (zipneck, hoodie or tee in various colours) and a fleece gilet. As it gets warmer, I switch to pull-on wide-leg jeans and a Breton top. For summer, I have pull-on wide-leg linen trousers in navy or white, tees in navy or white and a navy cardigans, plus a small wardrobe of dresses, mostly blue cotton. I avoid pattern other than stripes and polka dots, but I have a bunch of bright pashminas. For summer, I buy a pair of bright leather Oxfords every year or two and I've worn the same straw hat for over 20 years. This system works pretty well for me. I've been more minimal but found myself washing clothes constantly, so I added a few things back in.

I would only adopt wearing the same outfit every day if I needed to save money I think. I spend way too much money on clothes so I can see it would have good benefits but I just love different colours styles and textures of the clothes I have. I don’t look good in black but I like the idea of finding something that feels comfy and that might make me simplify what I wear. But like you found when you were going out it’s difficult to find something that works for different occasions. I’d have to have a winter and a summer outfit too. Great video thanks Laura for even making me consider this idea!

Interesting, firstly I don’t think any different of you if you are wearing yellow or black. I think you are sincere and usually upbeat with the right amount of honesty when your garden isn’t rosy. I heard some one talking about the clothes mountains this summer. Now I just want to reduce my purchases and maybe have 5-7 outfits and 3-5 gym clothes. I’ve already purged 5 large trash bags but I’m ready to fill some more. I usually wear black t-shirts and shorts but I do love me some funky tie dye 😂

Well done! I'm not sure I'd have had the gumption to carry once I got bored. I really like that outfit; what a great choice you made. I LOVE choosing what to wear every day. I wore all black for years and years (the clothes were sometimes quite eccentric, but always black). Then, I had my colours done, found out I was a bright spring and realised what I'd been missing out on. Also, as the colours in my palette all work so well together, it's so much fun to go as bright as possible (without quite looking completely loopy lala!) I love my spring palette and haven't worn black even once, since I was analysed in March last year. Even my cycling clothes and workout stuff are in my colours. Oh, and underwear (I turned over a new leaf and only ever wear matching sets, now). By the way, there ARE some differences between men and women and it's perfectly all right to acknowledge that (unless one is completely unhinged, in which case, it may be an issue for some, hehe).

Very interesting experiment and result! I thought you would stick to the outfit as a work uniform and a fallback solution, but have your dress and yellow shirt back in for when you feel like it. I think I would not be able to pull it off, since I crave the change. Instead, I have several different pre-defined outfits that fit season, weather and mood.

Long time ago when I first came across this sort of experiment. It was a lady wearing the same black dress for a year. I was intrigued but knew right off the bat the problems I would have with it. Similar to what you have where some days you felt like colour or to have the option in the experiment to match your mood or the occasion by dressing up a little. Then I learnt about uniform dressing and adapted that. It was a lot easier for me to do uniform dressing than wear the exact same outfit. I think that was your final conclusion with wearing the same or similar outfit in different colours. With uniform dressing, i easily adapted a capsule wardrobe and I learnt what silhouette suites me but I could wear them in the colours that suited me and do have on occasion that outfit to get really dressed up which was not my normal day to day outfit or option but on the day to day, decision fatigue or feeling like I’ve got nothing to wear became a thing of the past as I invest in the styles and colours that suit me the best and that I feel great in and just wear those on repeat. For example, one winter, I invested in three pairs of jeans and 5 sweaters and wore them all winter long. It was great having the limitation and when I got bored with one sweater I just wore the other. This summer, I wanted to wear more dress pants and dresses after a winter in jeans. So I had a capsule of two pairs of dress pants, one wide legs and one slim leg, one was black and the other navy with two bottom down shirts, one striped and one a solid colour and two short sleeve blouses, one floral patterned and the other a solid colour, two long sleeve shirts , two t-shirts and 2 dresses, one patterned and one in a solid colour. Everyday I knew I would either be wearing a dress or one of my dress pants with a top, short sleeves if it was hot and long sleeves or button down if it was a cooler day. I think we can all benefit from this concept and built on it to simplify our wardrobe and find enjoyment in it. Next summer, I might decide on all dresses, I have seen that challenge too on here and limiting it to a season help you truely live in the experience but if you are miserable then you don’t have too long in it before you can change. Great video. Really enjoyed watching your experience.

I hate wearing black. I absolutely loved your yellow pea coat with cream sweater and shirt outfit in a past video and have tried to replicate it! I find that I have a uniform (on accident) as a white top and navy pants, both in several different variations of shades and textures, cuts and styles, with other colors layered on. So I guess I have a capsule wardrobe, with a uniform-type structure to it.

As a plus size person who has difficulties to find clothes that are just right, I love to have multiple numbers of the same item, but often in different colors / patterns I once had 14 jumpers, same brand, cut but various colors. But right now I am working to achieve a capsule wardrobe instead of an „ark“ wardrobe where every item comes in two ( or three or even more numbers)

Hey Laura, I think nearly everyone has a favourite set of clothes that they wear every day, probably without noticing that they are. For me, it’s jeans in various stages of blue, also like black, and I love khaki green shades. Summer or winter, with pants being looser and cooler in our hot Australian summers. I am not a dresses or skirts person at all because they get in the way of all activities. All tops are colours with strength like blues, greys, pinks, black, and definitely reds. I have white blond curly shoulder length hair and am in my 60’s, tall and slim. I love red accents more than anything, shoes, scarves, caps. I am a visual artist and hard working gardener, ride a push bike in warm months and walk almost every day. I love variety. I have some favourite barefoot shoes and love boots. I cannot do fussy clothes or anything that flaps around, no frilly’s nor tops that scream in my face on myself. Pants and tops with lots of colour and will adapt to the weather, means plenty of choices. If I had to wear black every day for a month I know that I would absolutely hate it.

Perfect idea for a work wardrobe to simplify life. I would need choices for the weekend and going out but also love the idea of having this to fall back on for the times when it’s too hard to decide! I agree this is somehow more acceptable for guys to do and women (and men!) can enjoy clothes as a means of self expression, however I wonder if our personality may shine more if the clothes are a blank canvas and not influencing others opinions?! PS you look so fab in yellow please don’t give that up long term 😊

I used to have what I called "the rule of 100". I was allowed to have 100 pieces of clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, underwear...this meant that everything had to go with everything else, and it worked wonderfully well until I put on weight from an illness. It went to hell, with me trying to find clothing that didn't make me feel bad about my body. The uniform idea seems good for a person with body issues; it would simplify getting dressed because everything would feel good, so keep the feel-good items to a minimum. I may try this as I attempt to turn the scale back. Thank you for such a frank and entertaining video. PS: you are just adorable.

Good morning Laura, thank you as always for this insightful video. So much to unpack in this video. I once watched an interview with a Buddhist monk and Ruby Wax. She said she felt sorry for the monk as he was restricted by his robes that had to be worn every day.He replied that he felt sorry for her as she had to choose different clothes every day. With regards to finding a boyfriend, the clothes you wear aren't you. Your intellect, beauty, strength and spirit are greater than your outfit. Isn't it incredible how many belongings we accumulate that are often not ever worn? With the reduction of desire and craving, (more clothes more shoes more belongings etc),does this increase our contentment and moreover our mental wellbeing? Apologies for this essay. 😅🌞 Your loyal fan.💗

I love expressing myself through clothes - it is very much a part of who I am. However, I often think of the financial cost of that commitment as well as how overwhelming the task can be of putting clothes away, keeping on top of washing, staying organised etc. Though I worry I'd lose a lot of confidence or I'd feel dull if i wore the same thing every single day. So its really a case of choose your sacrifice right? Thank you for trying all these things for us Laura, it always peaks my curiosity as to what I'm capable of if i tried!

You look amazing in whatever you choose. Your hair is a whole situation and its fabulous. Seems you may have over thought the 100 day experiment. Wearing the same outfit for 100 days is totally cool. From what I've gotten from this video is that the experiment was more for work...? Going out for dinner with friends, a bit of shopping, or lunch with mom is 100% a reason to wear something other than your "uniform". People like Zuckerberg that wear the same thing everyday do so to not have to make another choice. A closet full of white tshirts and jeans that you reach in and get one of each and dress makes the day start so smoothly. I am someone that wears all black daily. Simply 🖤 the color. I add color here and there with shoes, scarves, jewelery, my funky socks and handbags. I also enjoy that I am not becoming overwhelmed with clothing choices. Putting on a black skirt, black sweater and a pop of neon blue from a scarf, earring and belt is a whole vibe. Simple and fun yet a little bit basic. Also, the very rich dress down in this manner. I was once told "Money talks, Wealth whispers".

I class my wardrobe as my outdoor clothes only. I actually have a separate (cosier) uniform for home. My overall wardrobes are blue, particularly shades of denim and dark blue (yes bag and shoes also). Rather than labouring over what to wear, I look out the window, check the weather and dress accordingly. It has been so freeing. There are a few caveats though: I don’t wear heels or trainers (off duty, I am basically in some type of Birkenstock), I don’t go anywhere that requires me to really dress up (natural fibres with leather shoes/bag, being well groomed and a smile goes a long way) and finally, my job requires I already wear a uniform, so there is little chance for the novelty to wear off, jumping between work uniform, cosy home uniform and my outdoor clothes.

I think the virtue of having a simplified wardrobe like this is that you can potentially buy higher quality clothes and then I would tailor them to really fit me in a custom way. Besides rolling up the sleeves, you can alter the look by unbuttoning more or less and using jewelry to give you a different look. If you wanted a sexier look, you could always leave a few buttons open and expose your bra, which looks like a top.

Fashion is absolutely part of personality and a way of expressing yourself, and creativity. It makes a statement one way or another, about who you are. :-) People love fashion not just for superficial reasons. Having said that, decision fatigue is real. I think having a capsule wardrobe or a work outfit just for work would simplify things greatly, while being able to branch out on weekends or for social activities. Sounds like the perfect combination. PS accessorizing with the black outfit for example with scarves, earrings, belts etc. might have made it feel more exciting?

I suppose for nights out or holidays I express my personality more however I have an eclectic dress style but I am quite goth I do like my black. You definitely look better in a bit of colour. But I definitely find having a standard rotation of clothes for work super useful. X😊
