this is pure genius , the laughing scene , Stan laurel in particular had such amazing comic timing and acting skills , their comedy is timeless ! I'm born 1963 and used to watch them as a kid , their comedy is still funny now .

One of their most memorable and fun shorts. Loved everything, from Stan trying to send himself a telegram, Ollie's antics in the phone booth, to the mix-up with the non-alcoholic liquor. Just brilliant!

Laurel and Hardy have got me through some sad times. My sister and I watched them with our Dad who is 81. So they still bring joy and laughter. My niece and nephews now watch them because of their Grandad telling them about L&H. so they continue to enter people's lives and entertain in 2024. ❤

At 22:21 when Oliver looks over at Stans wife and Stan turns around and laughs even more Stan went off script, he was meant to stop laughing and start crying - but Stan wanted to 'break' Oliie so when you see Ollie laughing again he's actually being genuine and they just kept the cameras rolling. Just fantastic chemistry they had.

One of their best. Stan Laurel is superb, as is the wonderful Anita Garvin, who plays his domineering wife. Sadly the original, longer 1930 version seems to be lost. A staggering 12 minutes were cut for the prevalent 1937 re-issue, including Mrs. Laurel switching on the electric fan, Stan attempting to write the telegram, and several scenes at the Rainbow Club, showing the boys singing, getting "drunk", and additional stage performers.
@KoryGilesMusicGroup2 ай бұрын
Those 12 minutes of cut footage you talk about are actually preserved in the Spanish language version of this film entitled “La vida nocturna”.
@jasonhart7512 ай бұрын
@@KoryGilesMusicGroup Yep, got that on the old DVD box set. Just a shame that the original English language version with Anita Garvin is lost. I wonder why they haven't tried to make a "hybrid" version which incorporates both versions.
@KoryGilesMusicGroupАй бұрын
@@jasonhart751 Well, the cutting from English to Spanish and back to English would probably be quite jarring. It would be worth a shot for some people, though. Regarding the Spanish version of this short film, and others from the time, it wasn’t a dub like most people would think it is. You see, back then, in the early days of sound film, they hadn’t quite figured out how to dub a film, so they just filmed the movie all over again with Spanish dialogue. So all those skits that survive in the Spanish version, Laurel and Hardy were doing the skits for the second time. Sometimes, they had to film the same skits several times for other languages such as French, German, Italian, and even Esperanto. Sadly, most of these foreign language versions have also been lost. In the case of one of the L&H movies, I forget which one, the Spanish version was expanded, being almost twice as long, and having more skits and comedic dialogue. Do you think the excised footage from the English version may have been lost in the 1965 MGM vault fire that also claimed the original negatives of London after Midnight and The Rogue Song (which Laurel and Hardy also appeared in)?
@jasonhart751Ай бұрын
@@KoryGilesMusicGroup The MGM vault fire theory is certainly a possibility. I need to get the revised edition of "The Magic Behind The Movies", as this will contain more info.

Apparently all existing prints of this short are from the 1937 reissue. The original version didn't even have background music. It's hard to imagine this short without all that delightful music driving it.

@jasonhart7513 ай бұрын
Yes, in the original version she turned the fan on and the air blows into Stan's face. I've no idea why this was cut for the 1937 re-issue, but the scene can still be seen in the Spanish version, with a different actress playing Mrs. Laurel.

It is hilarious to see how people back in those days saw fat people and how we see them now. Oliver was considered a fat in the 30s. By today’s standards, Oliver looks pretty average. It is because I see guys, that are often much heavier, than him. I assume Oliver must have been really fat in his days.
