The Wild Bunch is my “on any given day” favorite movie; like any movie lover, my favorites list is constantly changing and shifting like a roiling river, but ask me out of the blue what my favorite movie is and it’s probably The Wild Bunch. As a kid who grew up on 80’s and 90’s action movies, watching The Wild Bunch and seeing how Peckinpah filmed action scenes, and how he used slow motion gave me one of my biggest “ohh… that’s where that comes from” moments

I've watched your list, these past 10 days, and thanks again! I made my own top ten out of what you provided, plus some that I came across or knew about already. Also, I'm really surprised I wasn't as crazy about The Searchers after re-watching as an adult, it was one my dad watched a lot growing up, it came off a bit corny to me. I also didn't pick any Clint Eastwood, I wasn't as crazy about The Outlaw Josey Wales as I thought I'd be, but it might be because Civil War movies aren't my thing. And I am REALLY surprised that Jimmy Stewart out-did John Wayne on my list!! I haven't watched Westerns in YEARS and I really didn't know Jimmy Stewart did Westerns, my dad was a John Wayne kinda guy growing up, and he still is but he doesn't watch Westerns much anymore. Also, I just now caught you say that Winchester '73 is coming out in February on 4k from Criterion, and February is my birthday month! How fitting that my top pick is coming out in such a unique way for my birthday! Lol. I had never seen it until you mentioned it here and I was simply blown away at how good it was. So, thanks again. And one more thing, I liked how so many movies focused on the Cheyenne and Comanche, I never knew very much about either of them. From 10 to 1, 1 being my favorite: 10. Hostiles (2017) 9. Tombstone (1993) 8. Stagecoach (1939) 7. True Grit (1969) and the new one 6. 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and the original 5. Mackenna's Gold (1969) 4. The Far Country (1954) 3. Magnificent Seven (1960) 2. I'm so happy Tombstone was #1! Val Kilmer is such a GREAT actor!! I loved him playing all those characters in the movie The Saint!! I was in such awe. Canada has westerns too, well that’s what I think and my nod goes to The Black Robe, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence has to be right up on my list too. My dad watched A LOT of John Wayne when I was growing up! He still likes Westerns occasionally, he's more of a classic movie guy in his 70s now. But when I was in highschool he was obsessed with Westerns. I always loved the scene in True Grit at the very end where John Wayne jumps the fence! Good list. Although I'm not a real big fan of the "Young Guns" movies or Tarantino's movies. One of my top three is “Open Range” (2003) (along with "Rio Bravo" (1959) and "The Magnificent Seven" (1960). From ScreenRant - “Open Range is a Western film directed by and starring Kevin Costner. Released in 2003, the movie features Robert Duvall as Boss Spearman and Kevin Costner as Charley Waite, two cattle herders driving their herd across the American frontier. They become entangled in a violent conflict with a corrupt rancher, played by Michael Gambon. The film explores themes of justice, friendship, and redemption amidst the rugged landscapes of the West.” Stars Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, Michael Gambon, Michael Jeter. No 4K. And I think it's only available here in the States on DVD and Amazon has it streaming on Prime. I got a blu-ray copy via import (I think it's from Spain). Costner convinced the studio Duvall’s name should be above his in the credits. Hot Take: “Dirty Harry” (1971) is a Western. Albeit in modern times. Touches on the same themes and touchpoints of a lone peace officer, standing alone, trying to rid his town of a menace and keep the people safe. In spite of the town’s mayor and other superiors' reluctance to do what’s necessary to ensure the population’s safety.
