OH MAN. The OG. The grandfather of Abridged. One of my first true glimpses into the unstoppable power of creatives on the internet back in my high school days, when I opened KZbin on my laptop and saw one of the episodes...after scrolling past half a dozen thumbnails for "YUGIOH ABRIDGED IN 10 SECONDS!" because someone thought they were being clever with that. Still quote this show to this very day. Everything from "Screw the rules, I have money!" to "...So it's just like Duel Monsters?" to Duke Devlin's disclaimer intro. You're gonna love this, and I'm here for it. Have fun~! EDIT: The way Exodia works in the actual game is that you have to have all five pieces (cards) in your hand and then you just win. Literally, you just declare that you win and show your hand to prove you have Exodia assembled. He's made of 5 cards: Exodia, the Forbidden One is his head and torso, and then his arms and legs make up the other four cards.

Long story short, the manga came out first, then the anime, and _then_ the card game. The later parts of the anime do a better job of following the rules... somewhat, because the current TCG is actually based off of those later arcs.

@@levintwo It does, up until the conclusion of Death-T. The final match being a duel between Kaiba and Yugi, that makes up the first episode of the anime. After that, it hard pivots to Duel Monsters, which the anime follows. With the only break from the card game being Duke Devlin, and the final arch of the manga, with the Pharaoh's past.

If i remember correctly, in the dub instead of Tea saying she needs to pee she says she's cold and that's what prompts Tristian to say "Well the sun will be up in a few hours." People act like there's zero connection to what he says, but there is a stupid connection after all.

Fun fact: the rules for the Yugioh card game were not made until after these episodes aired. This is because, before the introduction of Duel Monsters, Yugioh was a broader anime/manga involving Yugi competing against people across a wide variety of different games, both real (including traditional games like chess and backgammon) as well as those made up for the series. However, the episodes/chapters involving Duel Monsters were so popular that parents started calling the publisher looking to get Duel Monsters cards for their kids, causing them to quickly create a real card game to take advantage of the popularity. The rest was history. And yes, this is part of why the rules of the card game don't make sense in the show, at least initially: the rules of the game were not invented until quite some time *after* the episodes aired.

Oh boy! Finally time for this, so obviously theres some context needed: You can clearly tell that the technical quality is really subpar compared to what you got used to with TFS, and Id even argue its more subpar than how TFS started (mostly due to TFS being a team of people, compared to the one man show of Martin making YGOTAS all by himself), but like with TFS it DOES drastically improve And plus, just listen to the voice acting. LittleKuriboh (who you know as the voice actor of Frieza, so you know hes talented), does just about ALL the voices in YGO abridged, and this is before hes refined his impressions. Theyre a lot more consistent and crisp as you continue, particularly his Yugi/Pharaoh voices You guessed right on his impressions matching the dub actors. Specifically, it should be noted that Tristan's Barney the Dinosaur like voice is making fun of Sam Riegel, who only voiced Tristan for 10 episodes in the 4kids dub before getting switched out, and he kind of had a similar nasally thing going on. Littlekuriboh has a joke about the voice switch over at the point in the story where that originally happened, but quickly just goes back to the silly voice On a related note, most people will recognize Sam as one of the awesome Critical Role cast! So just know that absolute legend inspired the dumbest voice in YGOTAS Oh, and don't expect to learn a damn thing about the card game from the show. The show itself played it really fast and loose with the rules and LittleKuriboh takes that even further with how much he needs to cut down footage

So a very simple quick run down of duel monsters. Players start with a deck of minimum 40 cards. You start with a 7 card hand and draw one at the start of each turn. If you don’t have a card to draw you lose. (This little rule comes up a couple times). Players have 3 cards types: Monster, Spell, and Trap. Monster cards are Summoned onto your Field and only 1 can be done per turn unless it’s a Special summon. They have atk and def points that dictate their power when placed. Some have effects of their own that activate when certain conditions are met. The more powerful ones (lvl5 and up) require a sacrifice of one or more monsters to summon. Spells are your general purpose cards that can do basically anything it says. There’s no limit to playing them besides slots if they’re permanent. They have various effects so it’s hard to say exactly what they do. They can grant LP, return cards to hands, change the attributes of other cards, destroy or nullify cards, you get the gist. Generally though the more powerful ones require a trade of some kind. Like giving up some LP or discarding cards from your hand or something. Traps are your defensive cards. They work similar to Spells, but they must be placed facedown and used only as a reaction to the other players move. They generally punish the other player or defend you in some way, hence the name Trap card. The goal is to reduce your opponents Life Points to 0. You start with 8000(4000 in anime). You can deal LP damage mostly through Monsters battling, but some traps and spells can do it too.

So, the basic rules for the game at this time are: Each player starts with 2000 Life Points Both players draw 5 cards at the start of the game, then draw 1 card at the start of their turn You are allowed one Summon per turn, with an exception At the end of your turn, you must have a Monster on your Field, or you lose(if your monster dies on your turn, you must Summon another one) You cannot attack directly If your Life Points hit 0, run out of cards in your deck, or you cannot Summon a Monster, you lose. The tension of Yugi drawing the final piece of Exodia, is if he had failed to do so, it's more than likely he would need to use an Exodia piece to defend If he lost a piece, he would have no way of winning, and would either need to forfeit, or wait until he decks out.

I was thinking that was the reason rules didn't make sense in the anime, correct me if I'm wrong but, didn't the show first aired in 1998 while the game was released in 1999?
@TheLordTash
@TheLordTash 16 күн бұрын
@@franciscor3It's complicated. The manga (comic the anime is based on) aired in 1997, but the Duelist Kingdom arc (the one where the series started being all about card games) started in 1998 The card game technically started in 1999, but when it first came out in Japan it was VERY janky and simple. The English version mostly skipped these sets because they were 90% weak-stat monsters who didn't do anything. Near the end of 1999, the author of the manga got together with Konami to finally get the rules of the game sorted out. That's when the Battle City arc and first set that's recognizable to the English-speaking world happened. This anime aired in late 2000. Even this far back, you could notice that the anime-original stories used strategies MUCH closer to the real-life TCG than the stories adapted from the manga (like Rebeca running Sangan + Witch of the Black Forest). By the time GX happened, the anime was no longer adapting the manga, so it was free to make duels function a lot closer to the real game.

Watching the abridged version alongside the original definitely seems like the best way to go about it, imo. Early YGOTAS episode have a lot of "this thing from the original sure is silly, eh?" jokes in them, so they're probably not nearly as funny without the necessary context. Not too different from the first DBZA episodes in that regard, really, if not more pronounced. It's also definitely a lot of 2010 edgy internet humour in the early episodes. LittleKuriboh even has a disclaimer in the old episodes' descriptions that basically boils down to "yeah, wouldn't make these kinds of jokes today".

The thing whit exodia is, until you draw all five pieces its pretty death in your hand. It doesnt do anything, and you need them in your hand. So actual Decks in rL who play Exodia just play Exodia and a incredible number of Draw cards, whitout any other win condition. You never see someone playing any Deck whit Exodia mixed in for fun, because every individual Card you get per turn is just to valuable.

Well: Imaging having a deck of 40 to 60 Cards. The deck gets shuffled and now, while playing and trying not to lose, you have to have 5 speciffic cards out of those 40-60 on your hand at the same time. it's very luck based, thats why it is "hard to do". At least in the series. The actual reallife cardgame has made it way easier over the years. But in the series it is depicted as almost impossible. Yugi, or rather the pharao, was able to do it because his somewhat special ability is to draw the card next which he needs the most to win. Unless his deck has no such card...then he is screwed. But as you might have figgured out yourself, thats rarely if ever the case.

Exodia is split into 5 different cards that you have to have all in your hand at the same time for you to be able to win with it. It is an automatic win though like nothing your opponent can do about it. However, as may have been explained, Exodia isnt used in decks unless you are specifically playing a deck with the soul purpose of assembling it. It's not like you have a full deck that does one thing but you just happen to throw Exodia in the pile. That is very bad deck building because the Exodia pieces are extremely weak by themselves.

Oh wow, now this is something. I'm pretty sure this was quite literally the thing that started the trend of abridging animes. Because of that, this is way old at this point and the audio quality is kinda poor at the start, though I have to say I've always thought LittleKuriboh was doing fantastic job voicing so many characters without it beign obvious. As far as I can tell he's still doing it because he's never had a strict schedule, but I've also recall hearing stuff he'd had health issues for a while. 8:36 Oh, it's all about the dub. Even more than voices, there's a ton of jokes and comments about the censorship this show got in the U.S., cause it was done by 4Kids and they're all about censorship. 26:48 Censorship is happening. There's a ton of comparisson videos if you want super details, but basically anything lewd in any kind of way, violence, guns and anything Japanese, like writing, had to go.

Yugioh Abridged is cool overall. Obviously some things get better with time and there really were no rules when this was made over 15 years ago. But I'll give some quick highlights about the layout of things. Obviously some jokes age like milk in terms of references. But others are kind of yikes. It doesn't really overwhelm the show, I think we can all move past those. LittleKuriboh himself acknowledges that flaw, has an apology on every old video, and has been an ally for years as he himself is bisexual. That said, the only instance of it being way too much in my opinion, is YGOTAS Episode 21. It's a filler episode, but filler is relative in the Abridged world. How y'all deal with that episode is up to you. The quality of the timing and everything gets better soon enough. The quality of the overall sound doesn't really change until about episode 40 something. Sounds absurd, but even those episodes were still made in 2009. You may wonder if there's any extra stuff people might request from LittleKuriboh's channel. Not really. At least in comparison to TFS. LK covered 2 of the 3 Yugioh Movies. LK also covered 2 other Yugioh series that he dubbed "Season Zero Abridged" and "Cr@psule Monsters". He only did 3 episodes each and has not followed up on either of them in over a decade. There's nothing else supplemental that I think people are gonna request. He's done side videos for Abridged but they're kinda small nothingburgers in the grand scheme of things. So yeah, 8 extra videos in total. All very short.

Also regarding the English dub. I don't have the full history of this company, but basically 4Kids decided to localize a bunch of anime to air on Saturday Mornings. A bold move. But considering the landscape of Saturday Mornings before the 2000s mostly consisted of stuff like Care Bears and maybe the occasional action cartoon tailor made for American audiences...yeah there were different standards here than with Japanese shows. So taking a show that aired in Japan in Primetime, and shoving it into 9AM before Pokemon, yeah you can see how they would need to change things up a bit. That said, that reasoning doesn't change the fact ego got in the way. In the 90s/2000s these companies had a lot more leeway in how they dubbed these anime. I think it was mostly just Japanese companies not caring at the time. They didn't need to check, whatever the West was doing, it was bringing in a lot of merch sales. Meanwhile as long as the overall plot remained, American dubs kinda just winged it otherwise. Maybe they thought making them sound more like an American cartoon would help bridge the gap with audiences. Maybe they just didn't know Japanese well enough. Both are possible. But when it came to 4Kids, most interviews say that the people making these dub decisions were simply not friendly towards Japanese customs. I can see people exaggerating because they really love anime and even the slightest change is the biggest insult to them. But at the same time...4Kids released a commercial of their shows, including anime characters from Sonic and One Piece, singing the National Anthem for the 4th of July. Look it up. Whatever their motivation truly was, their 100s of edits to anime went too far in general. People still like the dub. Most people probably wouldn't know Yu-Gi-Oh without it. But the card game makers, Konami, cut ties with 4Kids. The voice actors themselves still dub the video games though. To sum up, 4Kids kinda just did whatever they wanted to in terms of dialogue as long as it lined up with most of the footage.

At this point in the series, the card game doesn't really make much sense. The rules will change be more explicit later on. Regarding Exodia, comparing it to a Royal Flush is not far off. You need to have the five pieces in hand, and if you do you win the game. But pulling that off is actually pretty unlikely by just drawing one card per turn, you'll probably lose before you get all pieces.
