The Mr. Meeseeks episode is one of the first absolut blast episodes. The fact that Rick told them to keep the ask for help simple and Beth and Summer had super complex ones while Jerrys was the super simple one but in the end it was his simple Quest that lead to all the problems is just hilarious 😂. And best Meeseeks quote: "Existence is pain"

The reason they seem like Doc and Marty is they ARE Doc and Marty. The show is an expansion of a series of animated shorts called "Doc and Marty" implying that Doc in the movies was a pedophile, which is why he hung around with a high-schooler. There is also a bit of early Doctor Who.

"Existence is pain for a Meseeks!" That episode goes hard. The show is wild and hits all over the place with parody, references, and disgusting comedy, but sometimes it also hits on some great themes and does some interesting societal criticism. The character of Rick is so bizarre and eccentric. Does he really care about anyone else? Is he the real villain here? His narcissistic mad scientist persona makes the moments where he cares all the more impactful.

Originally, Dr Who was a scientist Grandfather who had a home lab and he built a time / dimension travel machine, that he traveled in with his granddaughter... So Rick and Morty is kind of an American dysfunctional riff on the original Dr Who premise. Even the opening music has shades of the original Dr Who theme song.

Back to the future only travels thru time - Dr Who travels thru time/ space dimensions, like Rick does with his Portal gun and Morty is related to him, like the original Dr Who (William Hartnell) was related to his young sidekick granddaughter. But I can see how younger generations jump to the "Back To" source. Even the theme uses eccentric and electronic instruments like Dr Who - not a symphonic style theme "Back To" does. But let's face it, that was a jumping off point for Rick n Morty. Now R&M is its own animal now. Using its contrivance to satirize and lampoon Sci Fi and much more.
