Davis was perfection in All About Eve. It's hard to imagine anyone else doing it. Bacall is great, but she has a hardness about her. I don't imagine she could be as vulnerable in that role as Davis, and a subtle vulnerability is crucial to that part. It would have been fascinating to see Bacall attempt it though.
@unowen-nh9ov3 жыл бұрын
Bacall won the Tony, made magazine covers & was toast of Broadway for Applause, reads like you've never seen her Oscar nominated performance as Streisand's Mom, she softened that "hardness". Which, when she was young, her director called insolence & how she could go toe to toe with Bogart. Bacall was young widow with young children, survived decades of Hollywood & Broadway stardom, you don't do that by being a softie, also reads like you don't know much about Bette Davis' career, either. Bacall was NYC girl, Davis New Englander, they don't breed softies in either of those places.

I don’t think Bacall was anything like her heroine Davis but she had elements in common - particularly a unique timbre of voice, explicit diction and a totally memorable sound. Because films are so visual, we often forget how extraordinarily unique some of the iconic stars sound - Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, so many of them have voices that are memorable, not just in diction and delivery but in tone.

All About Eve: A great film, incomparable, magnificent, yet very sexist too. Like another of Bette's films, June Bride, it reduces the female. She cannot be completed without a man and her career is a minor consideration, an amusement for her earliest years only, something she should abandon once she reaches maturity. That ideology was of its time and the films are great enough to be worth all the plaudits they receive to this day, but when we watch them, we should never lose sight of the post World War II (1948 & 1950) propaganda in them. They are part of the design to shove women back into the kitchens and laundries. For my part, I think Margot would have been better off letting Eve have Bill Sampson and Linda should have pitched her boyfriend down the stairs instead of carrying the suitcases for him. Please note that it is worth pointing out that I am certainly not a man-hating feminist. I am a man myself and a lot of feminists do not like me.
@srobindittrich65996 жыл бұрын
Daniel Hammond - Funny Daniel, as I read your post, I rather liked what you had to say. I'm a feminist; however, I take pride in labelling myself as more of a humanist.
