I saw this production here in L.A. when it toured the country. Not only was it an awesome show, but it always impressed me how incredibly talented and energetic Ms. Bacall was. She was in her late 50s at the time and at a point in her life and career that she could have simply spent the rest of her days enjoying her fame and fortune from the array of films she had appeared in. Harry Guardino was quite impressive, as well. The soundtrack still has a special place in my music collection.

I enjoy watching the Tony Award numbers Ms. Bacall did for "Applause" and "Woman of the Year". She may be simply acting, but she always looks like she's really enjoying herself. She had her fame in films during her younger years, then capped off her middle years on the stage. She had an amazing life, no denying it.

LOVE Lauren!! Thanks for posting. Wish the whole CD was available for a reasonable price. As for the ERA comment, bravo for equality so long as it's not a double-standard that just has the same problems in the other direction. Consistent expectations and consistent rights.....BRAVO!!!! Double-standards in either direction, not so enthused about. Anyway, GREAT clip!!! Thanks so much for posting this treasure!!

Woman of the Year is a seriously underrated musical that deserves a well proper revival and West End production.
@jochenstossberg5427 Жыл бұрын
It was a big , fun show - nothing more, but with a handful of terrific Kander and Ebb songs - and this really witty number, was one of the best. It was funny, and smart, and Lauren Bacall, with her razor sharp diction and incredible stage charisma - owned it. It was unfortunate that she couldn't dance, but somehow it didn't matter. She kept it running for over two years so she must have been doing something right. It never fails to amaze me when a show that is just fun, is said to be second rate Kander and Ebb. Give me a break, the score is fabulous.

Kander and Ebb were unmatched for their ability to write songs tailored to the talents of a specfic performer.

The story I have heard many times is that Merman was restless during the title song and could finally be heard to yell "Christ!". This show stunk.

@@markbraunstein58yes, same. And I had that same thought watching this, unfortunately. 1981. So many of those performers who did not realize they were living through the end of an exciting era and were about to enter a truly awful, horrific one.😢

Never judge what you saw on the stage with a bad video clip. Watching something in a theater is entirely different from watching a fuzzy clip. It was a terrific show, so you were right first time.

... I guess they did lip-sync back then!
@jochenstossberg5427 Жыл бұрын
Lip syncing was often done at the Tony Awards for some reason. Liza Minnelli was the one who got caught during The Act. She was lip syncing on and off throughout the run. Got caught by someone in the front stalls, and her reputation with Broadway performers never really recovered.
