The fact that she delivered this magnificent speech totally improvised, without reading it from a prepared script, says tons. The young newcomers can look at her, and learn.
@shihlin1

All young newcomers care about are to see if an "influencer" such as Kim Kardashian can fit into Marilyn Monroe's dress or who's gonna wear a dress that scores the most hits on Tik Tok, that's the typical mindset of today's generation.

Lauren's closing words: "I'm here to stay, and you better get used to the idea." No matter if she passed on some time ago, she truly is here to stay---forever on our screens, forever in our hearts. She did not like being called a legend, but it is precisely what she was. An icon from whom we were given the greatest gifts of golden entertainment and inspiration.

@shihlin1
@shihlin1 7 жыл бұрын
TV Über It's a TRAVESTY the Academy came up with this stupid decision. The honorary Oscar telecast gives the viewing audience a chance to acquaint with the surviving big stars and important people in the industry, not televising it is a huge mistake! People lose the sense of importance the recipients of the honorary Oscar mean to the entertainment industry.

When they were giving her this award a couple of years ago, I was ticked off that they took this out of the Oscar telecast and relegated it to the Governor's Ball 4 or 5 months earlier. Now I'm glad they did that. The Oscars would never have let her go on this long, and I have to say that I loved every second of it.

I hoped this day would never come but it has: words are not good enough to express what we've lost but it eases the pain knowing that, thanks to movies and KZbin, even people not yet born today will have the chance to get to know what a wonderful, beautiful, smart, elegant, generous, determined and strong-minded Ms. Lauren Bacall has been and forever will be. "Imagination is the highest kite one can fly" - Lauren Bacall From a 21 y.o. fan from Venice, Italy
@cmcb09
@cmcb09 10 жыл бұрын
Kinda funny Lauren Bacall did not like her acceptance speach at all, she mentioned in a Vanity Fair peace she did in early 2011 when asked where the Oscar was. “It’s hidden in my bedroom,” she says. “I’m ready to throw it out the window. I hate it now. Every time I look at it, I remember that day, and I think it was probably the worst thing I have ever done. What should have been one of the best days in my life is one of the worst.” “How so?” “Because I only talked about Bogie,” she says. “My three children were sitting out there, and I never talked about Jason, and I never mentioned Sam, my youngest child. I had a lot I should have said about Jason, and Sam”-who is an accomplished actor in his own right-“was sitting right there. I think that’s about as bad a thing as I’ve ever done. I just kind of went blank. And I knew it, and I tried to get back on, and I couldn’t, because they had all of the film cuts planned, and so they were right into the next thing. I think it scarred my son terribly, and there’s no excuse for that, especially in view that I so adore him.”
@TheTerryE
@TheTerryE 10 жыл бұрын
She's right. It was a terrible speech. They have months to prepare and that's all she could come up with? She always complains that all people talk about with her is Bogart and then she does the same thing!!!
@MrImiller07
@MrImiller07 10 жыл бұрын
I listened to Betty Bacall's speech in its entirety, and while I certainly understand her regret about inadvertently omitting any reference to her marriage to Jason Robards and her son Sam, taken in its entirety, Bacall's remarks were moving and candid; Bogart was the dominant influence in her life, both professionally and personally. She paid tribute to her co-stars Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas and John Wayne and her children Stephen and Leslie. She can certainly be forgiven for her momentary lapse.
@DexterHaven
@DexterHaven 10 жыл бұрын
MrImiller07 I agree. I thought it was a good speech. If her son was "scarred terribly," then he was oversensitive and selfish, I'd say. It was not to honor or plug him. Screw him, the little vain brat. It's her award and she can say what she damn pleases. I think they tried to make her feel guilty afterwards. This was a great speech from the heart, in my opinion.
@ilanarhian
@ilanarhian 10 жыл бұрын
I noticed that she didn't mention Sam, but I am sure it didn't really scar him, I'm sure he understood that she was nervous up there and her mind went blank. It's really sad that she felt so bad about the whole thing afterwards.

Bacall's death, while not entirely unexpected, represents an immeasurable loss to the Hollywood and stage community. To gain an insight into Lauren Bacall's personality and her career, I urge you to read her marvelous autobiography, "By Myself and then some" and her follow up book; in the former, she writes movingly about her relationship with Bogart, and his valiant struggle with throat cancer, her sense of loss after his untimely death, her involvement with Frank Sinatra [ she said to Bob Osborne that Bogart was devoted to her during their marriage, whereas Sinatra was devoted to himself; her subsequent marriage to Jason Robards, a world class actor with self destructive tendencies, and her working relationships with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. She was deservedly proud of her achievements on the Broadway stage in Cactus Flower, Applause and Woman Of The Year. She stepped out of Bogart's shadow to accomplish great things as a Mother and as a highly regarded actress.

Get the book on audible & you can basically hear her read it to you... I found it interesting but it made sense when she had commented that so much of her life happened 'after' Bogy because she was so young when she was with him & she wanted to give him a stable family life with children which was something he wanted but hadn't had before. Like Olympia Dukakas, her first love was the stage, so after Bogy's death, she was a young widow who had two children to support so, back to New York & the theater.
