On the Genius Life podcast, Lauren goes into a some detail about how her sleep is much more REM than deep, and wakes up in a sweat. Was this also true for the family members that got Alzheimer's? Dan Gartenberg (Disruptors Podcast #116) mentions how during REM, thermal regulation is turned off in the body! Mathew Walker was on the Bulletproof podcast recently, and suggests how REM turns off noradrenaline and may allow you to dampen the emotional response of painful memories*. He also mentions how even light sleep (the Non-REM time) is important as there are bursts of electrical activity (sleep spindles) that are thought to be essential for learning/memory! But while he suggests a cool room, I find it I sleep and dream much more with the bed HOT. Could this be at the expense of deep-sleep? (John Peever suggests the Embr Wave Bracelet) BTW, Mathew isn't impressed with the accuracy or efficacy of sleep gadgets that either measure brain waves or amplify them (45m). I suppose that may partially explain why Deepwave.tech went out of business... See the Sleep Junkies Podcast with Curzio at the 59min mark! *On the Stuff To Blow Your Mind podcast ('School Dreams') they talk about how it's very common to have anxious dreams about being in school.. forgetting you enrolled in a class and something is due/exam, or not finding the room, etc. Perhaps it has to do with whatever anxious thing you are doing in your 20s and so perhaps it's different for those that went into military or straight to work!
