6:15 He was named Alcides by his human parents, and later was renamed Heracles in an unsuccessful attempt to appease Hera, with Heracles meaning Hera's "pride" or "glory".😊

A common misconception is Apollo was the Sun God of ancient Greek Mythology but in fact it was Helios who was the Sun God. Apollo was more a God of Light he did have a lot of dominion over the many aspects of ancient Greek society cause he was arguably the favorite god of Olympus

Was going to correct that too. But then i remembered hearing how the deities merged at one point in history in some places, making Helios just another name or another face of Apollo and sometimes Helios being the representation of the sun itself while Apollo is the one pulling the sun in his chariot.

You do know that religions change over time right? Apollo was once god of the sun and so was Helios. Greek mythology wasn't even one singular religion, let alone an unchanging one

Apollo was also the sun god so it's not wrong

Since you're doing a video on myths, perhaps reacting to one of overly sarcastic production's myth videos would be cool. Perhaps one of Red's deep dives, like the one on Hermes or Hades and Persephone, or even the most recent one on the archer twins

Don't you just love it when "Explaining" videos get basic stuff so very wrong? Or when they pretend to talk about a subject as they were experts on it but then don't even get the basics right? Talking about greek mythology - uses Herakles' ROMAN name Talking about greek mythology - presenting a ROMAN fan fiction as Medusas actual story Talking about each god and their parentry - claiming Athena didn't have a mother Talking about the gods' aspects - claiming Persephone was a fertility goddess Talking about greek mythology - claiming Zeus ordered Hades to give Persephone back when he was the one who ordered the kidnapping in the first place and Hades let her go without orders 🤦‍♂️

As the goddess of spring, she is associated with growth, fertility and love. After marrying Hades, god of the Underworld, Persephone also became the goddess of various occult themes including reincarnation and ghosts.

Demeter threatened to make the earth barren forever and thus destroy all of humankind if she did not get Persephone back. Zeus realizing that if he allowed Demeter to persist, all of humankind would starve sent Hermes the messenger god, to demand that Persephone be returned to her mother. Hades agreed to let her go.

Athena, the daughter of Zeus, was produced without a mother and emerged full-grown from his forehead. An alternative story was that Zeus swallowed Metis, the goddess of counsel, while she was pregnant with Athena so that Athena finally emerged from Zeus.

Being Roman doesn't make it Fan fiction in the eyes of many Poseidon did R Medusa

@@N22Reaper luckily it doesn't matter what is in the eyes of many. What matterscis the mythology. And the study of how it came about. Ovid's stories are literal political propaganda pieces written specifically in service of his opinions and political goals. It js not what ancient Greeks believed and it is not how their religion was practiced. The same goes with the Persephone nonsense. She is not associated with Spring, that is Demeter's job. That's what she was whorshipped for. Persephone was whorshipped as a death god and feared as such. Her Kore epiphet is a later addition to give her more character outside of her cults. Etymologocal,y she is older than both Hades and the abduction myth itself. Your claim about Athena js just plain false. Metis was her mother.

Videos like these remind me of my most hated project that was my first highschool greek mythology grade. We were reading Oedipus, and presumably to distract from the main take away from that story being incest, my teacher used it as an excuse to give everyone a greek god to do a report on. I was hyped for this, and my teacher knew it. We didn't get to pick the god, because basically everyone would have said "Hercules" because that's the extent of most 15yr olds knowledge of greek mythology, and they're already going to be wrong because they think Kevin Sorbo and Disney's animated movie are appropriate sources of info. They're entertaining AF, just not accurate. That's fine, I knew the majority of the pantheon at that point. I was low key hoping for Hephaestus. Still one of my favorite origin stories, and in general a favorite craft. I didn't get him, I got a different god starting with an 'H'. Was it Hermes the messenger god? No. Was it Hades, god of the underworld? No. Was it Hermaphrodite, that would have been interesting...but no. It was Hestia.... Who the fuck is Hestia? One google search later "Are you fucking kidding me?" To summarize, she's the goddess of housewives. And that's about it. I got an A even though I was planning to fail out of spite, because I spent my whole speaking time talking about how she is arguably the most boring god of greek mythology. You can debate me on this, though as you can probably tell, I have a very biased opinion given the experience.

Funny thing is that this isn’t even close to half of the Greek gods, this is mostly just the Olympians and some others, but still
