Zanac has known how crazy smart Renner is and knows she has some screws loose that's why he calls her a monster, but he respects her smarts and she is his sister. Ains would have killed the army as gently as possible but once they betrayed Zanac he got mad and turned Nazarick loose. Neurons is the torturer with the spikey swizzle stick.

Neuronist is the chief intelligence agent/torturer that was shown in the epsiode where the workers invaded Nazarick in season 3. Yeah, they are going to wish for a fast death.

He said surrender was impossible. Might be the translation or more specifically the wording, but that was him mentioning he tried to surrender.

My japanese is terrible but I think it translates to something like "it's no use" so I can see how it can be vague to the nobles that heard it.

The truly sad part for Zanac is that the author of the light novel had confirmed that if he, Renner, and Gazef had all joined forces the kingdom would've prospered. Nazarick notwithstanding, at least.

Yes, it is in this episode where you really notice that the novel was speedrun, Zanac did not receive the development he deserves.

Zanac is done really well tho. He doesnt get a whole lot of direct development, but he is introduced as just a bundle of tropes, the spoiled, rude second prince who looks down on those around him and craves power. As others around him are developed tho you get to slowly see him for what he really is. A genuinely compassionate man who seeks power not for powers sake, but for the sake of the people. He calls Renner a monster because thats what she truly is. He offers her an estate away from the capital because that way she can have what she wants and is not longer interfering with politics, because again, she is a monster. He wants to overthrow Barbro because he is an ego driven idiot thats easily manipulated and cant see past his pride. Zanac genuinely wouldve been a great king, and its actually pretty impressive how they took such an unlikable bundle of tropes and made him such a respectable character, not by making him change, but by giving you more context and forcing you to see beyond your bias as a reader

Actually in the novel Zanac did tell them that he surrendered but it was extra lines that were cut in the anime. He told them that he suggested submitting the kingdom over as a vassal state but he refused it so surrending isn't an option. They wouldn't listen to him and had him killed anyways.

Yeah, it is... The subs are oddly-worded and the acting is less dynamic. Sucks anime people always default to subs being better when most of them don't even speak japanese to begin with lol. Understanding all of a "bad dub" will always be better than missing like 40% of good acting in a language you don't understand.
