@Jolene8 I don't necessarily agree with him that the film didn't need overt violence because that's exactly what Tina's experience was, it was extremely violent and volatile but I understand why he wanted none of it, as someone who was once an abuser himself, it must have been triggering so I think it was much more about protecting himself than anybody else.

I love that he set those boundaries while filming what’s love for to do with it to protect his and Angela’s mental state but also use it as a tool to pull the audience in. Specifically the scene where Tina and the background singers are having a pool party and he drags her in the house and beats her, we don’t see it but we have to use our imagination. When I watch the scene I feel like one of the singers outside by the pool watching/hearing what’s happening and feeling absolutely helpless. That’s great acting/directing on his part!

I was 8 years old when that movie came out and lemme tell you, I didn’t know how impactful those abuse scenes were on my little eyes and brain. There’s a reason for parental advisories. It was hard to watch with even the obstructions he spoke of! To know that there was a possibility for it to be shot even more explicitly is not something I can fathom. Man. I'm glad he cared enough to tell the crew members and Director. What he didn't want. In respect to IKE and Tina. Regardless of how we may feel. The man help to cultivate her as a talent. Laurence is one of my favorite actors. Especially for his work with Angela, who is one of my favorite actresses. I haven't watched "What's Love..." in a couple of years...like really watched it intently, not just have it on in passing or while I'm doing something else. I saw the scene, and it hit me in a way I couldn't shake. Yes, I've seen those abuse scenes from this movie multiple times in my life (as I'm 35 as of a few days ago), but that scene didn't hit me like it did tonight ,130 in the a.m. in my apartment on a Spring break Friday (between classes). The scene is supposed to be tough to watch, but with my growth, I hadn't seen it the way I saw it tonight. I paused my copy of the movie and I had to trace down something where Laurence talks about playing Ike. I wouldn't have figured he was abusive with his 1st wife. But having to go into that space, I know he had to decompress somehow as a Black man who at least tries to be a good example for Black men/actors. (I looked for a while on KZbin, didn't find much from Angela's point of view about the abuse scenes, just general clips of her talking about playing Tina.) As for the accountability and flaws I have to consider with myself...I'm not sure I'll be able to afford the same level of extensive mental care or therapy as Laurence, but I know I struggle with anger issues myself. A single Kendrick "Big Steppers" album helps bring awareness (and a lot more of us needed to hear it rather than trashing it in favor of whatever angry gun-bar filled album insert mumble rapper here put out), but I know that's not enough to help me continue making myself a better man. Ultimately, I'm glad Laurence shared this, and I wanna thank you for sharing it with us. Now I gotta finish watching the movie.

That is the grown up way to look at it. What is for you is for you, God won’t give you somebody else’s blessing. This man is so smart and I love him setting boundaries for their well being. Very brave to admit that he was abusive to his 1st wife in this judgmental cancel culture world we live in. Him, Denzel and Samuel have always been my top 3 in their era and age range……

Hey Mr. Fishburne, u did a great job in "What's Love Got To Do With It" because I disliked u for a long time, it was so believable. In actuality, I was too young to be watching the moving(11 or 12 yrs at the time it came out) but I watched it. U are great in all ur movies. RESPECT!

Great interview. Thought provoking questions. Thank you for allowing him time to answer thoroughly, even when he paused to think. So many interviewers interrupt with their own opinions or infuriatingly try to finish the subject’s thought. I enjoyed this.

"Whats love got to do with it?!" was the first R rated movie I ever watched. I think I was 13 and this was also the first movie I saw with domestic abuse in it. It was an eye opener and I asked my mom at the time to explain why someone would hurt someone they love like that. Needless to say this live changed my life in a way and helped me know what to look out for in an abusive relationship.

The way he is SO SYMPATHETIC, and so kind; understanding what an abusive relationship is like, going after the right thing to make it right, he knew that the movie set for What's Love was going to be hell if some measures weren't taken, and he knew what those measures were. The way he cared about Angela so much, and obviously she did him as well.... the way he cared about the crew, not wanting people to experience 100% nightmare at work, setting the boundaries and stuff, otherwise he wouldn't play it; hell, he'd turned it down other times before, he could easily drop off. I adore Laurence as an actor and as a person... I rarely get to see him spit out all his acting talent as he did playing Ike Turner..... he's a class act, like Ike was, despite being such a tormented and sick soul, and Angela, Jesus..... class act like the Queen of Rock n' Roll herself! LOVE IT! Love's got EVERYTHING to do with it in this instance hahahaha

I knew three men, earlier on in life, with very similar personalities to the Ike Turner Laurence Fishburne brought to the screen. Beaten. Broken men. They knew the position they were in - that was it. This would be it for the rest of their lives. They would NEVER rise any further. And it ate them up. The only power they had, was confined to the four walls of the house they lived in. And woe to all the occupants because they were in for a hellish experience. Laurence took me back to those days. He was a reproduction of those men and it stirred the same buried but familiar, cold-blooded, nauseated feeling I would get in their presence. Laurence had the gravitas to tap into that evil and project it through the screen. I thought he was exceptional.
