To have 2 engines water lock that we're professionally installed is absurd. You should be able to fire that engine up whenever you need to and have no worries. I feel for you Lauren thats so stressful. I hope you've resolved the issue.

That’s cool! You’re “smudging” the boat with the sage. It’s supposed to take out any bad “feelings”, negative things that have happened, etc. I had a roommate who did it to any new home or car. Who knows if it works, but if it makes you feel better…it served it’s purpose.

It does look as if water is syphoning back along the exhaust system, because the engine is mounted in the saloon there is going to be a long run back to the exhaust outlet in the hull. Your Exhaust Muffler/Waterlock should be as low as possible well below the engine exhaust and be big enough to hold all the water that is in the exhaust hose when the engine is switched off, you should also have a syphon break at the highest point of the exhaust system normally at the top of the big loop (You do have a big loop?) and can be as simple as a piece of 5/6mm industrial airline fixed with Sikaflex/mastic through a hole in the top of the exhaust hose with the other end of the airline vented to atmosphere. The problem isn't going to go away so the exhaust system needs to be looked at asap.

Hi Lauren, Read carefully the post by Nigel Hamer, 30 mins before this post. The 'vent' at the top of the exhaust hose he speaks of is very important to prevent 'back-syphoning' seawater into your engine when it is switched off! Love your channel and best wishes from Bonnie Scotland 🙂

The engine sounds fine! Do a compression test on each cylinder. If each compression is within range you should be OK! Also do several oil changes back to back to clean the oil passages from the water intrusion. You can use any cheap high detergent oil to do the flushing. Check the oil while engine is running for evidence of foaming, or milky gray colour to the oil. From the limited information that I gathered from the video the issue seems to be from the exhaust riser. ( improper ventilation, or height of riser elbow). If you have a blown head gasket, you will notice it in the coolant level, and oil condition. You might also consider an exhaust tailpipe flapper; especially important in following seas. If the hydrolock did not occur while the engine was running at high revolution, most unlikely that you have a bent rod. (If you had a thrown rod, you would know it within seconds of starting the engine) The compression test will indicate if you have a bent push rod, or scorched cylinders. Again from the sound of the engine, without being there I will say that most likely the engine is fine!( Also a marine biologist, and a ships engineer). Good luck! You are a very brave, and capable woman!

@@laurenlanders Further to that answer, some boats have installed an exterior flap over the exhaust to prevent water getting in with a following sea (mostly) and another issue is that when installing the engine the calculation for the waterline height vs exhaust outlet height was incorrect or marginal, especially when heeling, and a higher exhaust elbow may be needed.

That's what I was thinking. A drain valve installed in muffler and or low point of exhaust piping and make opening those valves to check for water during each engine shutdown operation. Just one more item on your checklist and one that I will seriously contemplate doing on any future vessels I work on.

TURN THE SEACOCK OFF when you turn the motor off and turn back on after the motor starts. It’s not going to overheat just starting it but make sure you turn on soon as motor starts

Had the same problem with my engine, an old Penta. The sea water pump is driven with a shaft from the crancshaft inside the engine and the gaskets had worn out and moved out of position. If your water pump is working in the same way, it could be an idea to check the gaskets there. By the way - super impressed by the way you are dealing with motors, bees and everything else !

Not normal it keeps water locking after new taylor made exhaust was fitted...must there also be other problems....get it checked by a good expert as soon as possible: installation heights, siphons...I think it is more an installation issue than an engine one. Well done for your effort, you rock girl. Warranty should be claimable, maybe not as an issue with the engine itself but job was not correctly done fitting it, I would seek advice from a different expert and then try to be refunded. @Lauren Landers another great video. I always look forward to watching. if the shop is claiming there is no warranty go back and look through all your paperwork when you purchased it and had it installed. Also I would think there would be a manufacturers warranty atleast for x amount of hours. If the shop that installed it is pulling your chain , reach out to the engine manufacturer. Seems like they screwed the install again, like your exhaust system needs to be adjusted. Sorry your dealing with this engine bs still. It's great seeing you smile through it though.

@1:15; Hi Lauren, loving your channel! I can’t wait to see the rest of this episode, but I had to pause @1:15; because every fibre of my being was internally screaming “PLEASE DON’T TRY TO TURN THAT ENGINE OVER!!!” I’m guessing that you’ve solved the issue before the end of the episode, (Judging by the title - and the teaser) and I look forward to the possibility of learning something new from your experience.... 😉😁👍🤞

3:48 "Mechanically inclined" yeah you are (me+4-cilinder-engine=mèh). 14:32 If a (piston) rod is 'thrown' the working cylinders will produce enough power to 'eat-up' the faulty cilinder. Make sure the valve-timing and the alternator is good. Also, you look like 'Mette Lindberg'. Be safe! Love from Amsterdam!

If this happens again before going into the engine to far put oil in cilinder through the injector's not a ton but some is better than water and drain the oil and put new in And great work

You're amazing Lauren there are not many men or women that would attempt to do what you did! You're not afraid to hop right in and do whatever you got to do that is a must on sailboat or any other boat at that matter . You would think a brand new motor you wouldn't have to worry about those problems but they do happen. PS I thought sage and holy water was for ghosts do you have ghosts on board???????????🥴🥴🥴

Hi Lauren, If engine water or coolant is mixing with engine oil you have a blown head gasket or a cracked engine block. Check manifold gaskets as well if they have water jackets and oil passages This should never happen. Where are your gloves? Nice to see you and Mako on the water sea again. Thanks for sharing.

the saltwater hose leaving the engine and going to the exhaust mixing elbow must rise a foot or two above the waterline of the boat with a vented loop at the top to prevent back flow into the engine

Lauren, Great job on saving the engine. You impressed me with your resolve and stick to it, not because you are a young woman, but many seasoned cruisers would have had no clue of what to do. Simple guess as a 200 Ton Captain and 47 years working on boats and sailing the oceans, your mechanic has designed the exhaust side of the system incorrectly. Sounds like you are getting back pressure which will make it hard to start. I would have to rule out the intake side because if they messed up the siphon break that would be supper stupid and I have to give them a benefit of a doute as a courtesy. Happy to look at things if you want me to but I would need some measurements. If you like reach out, happy to help. At minimum get a different installer to give you some recommendations. I would not relay on the people who installed it at this point. Done correctly it should be near impossible to get water into the engine, should not be something you should have to keep an eye on. Don't listen to the folks saying you have a cracked block or blown head gasket, that's not remotely your problem. Reach out if you like and keep sailing. PS, my wife and I will say a little prayer for you tomorrow at church! God bless, Rick
