I went there in 2008. Aisle seat, it is increíble how close it is or at least it looks it is to both sides of the surrounding mountains. A hard side wind or if Captain sneezes and … farewell!! Beautiful country and their roads are as challenging as landing! You can not go faster than 40 km per hour.

I don't know anything about flying, so this may be a lame question, but why can't they just fly over the terrain more in line with the runway instead of having to fly through the valleys?

Flying through the valley gives the aircraft the low altitude necessary for them to land at the small airport. Otherwise, the planes would have to take a steep dive for landing and very likely end in crash due to insufficient length of the runway.

Approaching RW 33 and landing is not as dangerous as circling around and landing on the opposite RW 15. That is the most dangerous approach and landing of all! Great video and landing!!!!

Went here in 1994 aboard one of the early BAe 146 small quadrireactors, view to the left, exactly the same approach, same weather, same cloud level. And we went even closer from the mountain to the left. I thihk the most dangerous moment is when going through the cloud level, as they may hide the mountains at times, when descending.
