Lava Man Eating Routine

After escorting horses to the track, retired racing great Lava Man is turned loose for a few minutes to grab a bite to eat in Doug O'Neill's barn.

I'm not the one who took or posted this video, but I am the guy talking all trough it in the background. ;) It was taken on "Breakfast With Lava Man" day on January 7, 2012. And yes ... Lava is VERY well cared for by Doug and company. They know who built their barn and definitely respect the Hell out of him. Lava still loooks great and is a VERY intense fella until he does his pony work and works it off. He's a sweetheart then. LOVE Lava!!! :D

I think I rode Lava Man's great grandfather, Berkley Prince back in the summer of 1968 at a farm in Harford County, MD. I was the first to ride him and broke him by sitting on him in his stall when he was laying down and one day he just stood up and I stayed on and then I started working with him. It was a once in a life time experience. he was so sweet and easy to ride. Then I went off to college and lost contact. I think he did go on to win some races.

Oh he is a wonderful horse. He seems happy despite not being able to live like other horses on a farm with acres and acres of pasture. Doug is doing SOMETHING good with his horses. Wish they'd stop criticizing O'neill.

god that is completely dangerous to let a horse do that, and lava man could've been on a trailer to a vet hospital for colic surgery, because anything can cause colic, including allowing a horse to free eat grain, especially if it's grain they never had before.
