I mean... Hollywood has no shortage of skinny actresses though, especially in the age-range they would have been casting for. I remember a lot of people at the time wanting Kaya Scodelario or Nina Dobrev. I'm still glad they went with Lawrence in the end, as I'm not sure anyone else could have played the part better, but yeah... there were decent actresses available at the time who could have fit the "look" better without being starved.

I liked Peeta because he was pretty average. He wasn't an action star, or a superhero. He was just a guy who did his best to save the woman he loved. He happened to be intelligent and he happened to be charismatic, but the things I personally enjoyed about him was that he was not someone who was traditionally heroic. Instead, he had kind of a quiet heroism that, at the end of the day, placed Katniss first. And that made it and him ultimately better for her than Gale. Gale is what we would normally associate with as a love interest. He's strong and reckless and incredibly brave. But he's also manipulative and controlling and doesn't care much about Katniss's opinions when it comes to what *he* wants from the relationship. He is an interesting character because I doubt it comes out of ill-will, but he is ultimately shaped by the horrors of his life. In comparison, Peeta overcomes those horrors and moves past them. He displays integrity and he displays patience. He is clever and made his intentions towards Katniss very clear from the beginning, whether she understood them at the time or not. He also manipulated people, so it's not like he's perfect, but he did it with one goal in mind: Not the end of the war, but safety for Katniss. He wanted her to be happy, even if that meant that he wasn't part of her life. And he sacrificed himself for her more than once and she did it in return for him. That's my opinion at least. Sorry if that's a bit long winded.

okay i know this comment was a year ago but i TOTALLY agree! gale always frustrated me because he seemed to be consistently pushing for a further (romantic) step in his and katniss’ relationship when she was clearly not emotionally ready for it, meanwhile peeta, while yeah he got unfairly mad at katniss at the end of the first book because she was unsure in her feelings, he apologized and made up for it in the second. Personally, I prefer Peeta to most other characters in the entire canon. He's very compassionate, chivalrous, and understanding of Katniss's reservations, but he's also intelligent, creative, and good at strategy. He waits for Katniss to feel more at ease before testing her boundaries on openness and takes the reins when he knows it will protect her. Gale does this to an extent, but he's much more jealous and pushy about what he wants and isn't shy about it. Even as a child, he risked - and got - a beating in order to give Katniss something to eat.

Most love interests in the YA novels I’ve read are these tough stoic guys, whereas peeta is just.. not that! He’s a soft baker boy! Reasons I love peeta mellark 1. HES GORGEOUS 2. He was openly willing to die so that katniss would live in the 74th annual hunger games 3. (In the book) he took care her after she got him his medicine for his leg and she got cut by Clove on her forehead 4. Dispite being completely brainwashed and tortured by the capital he fought in the rebellion and tried to bring back his memories 5. In mockingjay during his outbursts of violence because of the torture he endured in the capital he told them to just kill him to save themselves from him 6. He saved katnisss life by giving her bread even tho he took a beating for it 7. He didn’t lie about his feelings in the arena and genuinely loved katniss and even if she didn’t love him right away he still was willing to die to save her life on multiple occasions 8. He didn’t particularly care for gale hawthorn but still helped katniss care for him after gale was whipped There’s a lot more but these are just some of the tops for me why he’s one of my favorite characters

I just have a big pet peeve with films making every character incredibly traditionally attractive, like, Lavender's interpretation of Katniss feels so much more like a real person, whereas Jennifer Lawrence is such a bombshell (honestly good for her) that it feels to the point where she isn't like, a normal looking teenage girl anymore
@muddy_snows75342 жыл бұрын

@ella-sj8bu2 жыл бұрын
i don’t think that take is fair, it’s completely diminishing jennifer’s performance. she wasn’t casted as a katniss because of her looks, she was casted because of her amazing portrayal of katniss. there probably were so many teens, “more book accurate”, and younger looking people who auditioned, but it didn’t come down to physical appearance, it came down to raw talent and the ability to make a fictional character become alive. a lot of people have the same issues with movies like twilight as well, but would you rather have a young, bad actor who portrays the character horribly or an older, talented actor who captures the character?

Well, here's why I love Peeta: 1. He portrays the manipulation of The Capital and is one of the many ways Suzanne shows us how cruel and manipulative that society was. 2. It's shocking to see his personality change throughout the books, he, once so sweet and gentle, went through extreme emotional stress and torture, and then recovered but wasn't the same as before, as he became more serious. That's impressive to see in a book, how someone changes drastically in such a period of time. 3. He, most of the time, tried to protect Katniss, even though she was close to Gale (who I liked at first but then became a dumbass), even though he was suffering hallucinations, even though they didn't really want a marriage that early, with all of that, he tried to be there for her and I just find that very sweet. 4. He breaks the stereotype of "handsome guy that is very strong and heroic that protects his girl at all costs and can do everything by himself, oh I'm so cool" yeah, he isn't this kind of character. That's why.

She has fallen into a depression and has absolutely no will to live. Peta is able to bring her out of this and lead her to trust and want to live again. The fact that peta is able to do this, when added to the fact that he has been tortured for months by the capitol and can barely hold himself stable is remarkable. I liked Peeta in the movies because of his positivity, kindness and selflesness. I think Josh Hutcherson did a good job of portraying him as a genuinely good guy: giving the bread to Katniss.. giving Katniss sponsors by creating the 'star-crossed lovers' story ..putting Katniss's life before his in the arena and being willing to sacrifice himself every opportunity he got to... I haven't read the books, but even though I bet Peeta did all these things in them originally, the movie adaption did a good job of making him look like the good innocent boy he is: His name was picked out, but he still tried to be friendly with Katniss from the beggining. When Hamich wasn't giving them advice on how to survive, Peeta still tried to talk to him while Katniss gave up (Even though Katniss losing her temper with Haymitch was what made him talk, I think this shows how patient Peeta is either way). He was really positive and friendly all throughout the start of the movie (when they were at The Capitol) even though he told them that deep down he was convinced that he was going to die. And finnaly - that smile :))) what a good boy. My mom also finds his movie portrayal irritating, but I think he's cute~

In the books, if you skim or accidentally jump ahead, you could miss it, and they don’t really mention it afterward. I believe the book text is “The monster/mutt jerked his head back to deliver the bite (insert all the memories here) and it was over”, and Katniss is just like “welp he’s dead. Next scene!”

@@annamorgan7232 My memory is hazy but i still remember reacting much more to his death in the books than i do about the movies i guess it just didn't have the same impact maybe bc i read that final book before the movie and he had developed into my favorite or i just didn't have time to properly take it in in the movie bc i was with people...but who knows perhaps i need to go back and read the books again and watch the movies but that has been my longstanding opinion but perhaps it's clouded by the years
@annamorgan72323 жыл бұрын
@@Josku2411 The book death is definitely a shocker, mainly because he’s kind of in his element down there and all a sudden he’s just gone like that. In the movie, it’s pretty obvious they’re setting someone up to die horribly, and since Katniss, Gale, and Peeta can’t really die at this point, and Pollux and Cressida are minor characters/they’ve already gone up the ladder, it’s not too surprising when Finnick gets killed. But I honestly found his movie death sadder, possibly because I relate more to visual things, possibly because his death in the book was so under the radar for me. In the movie, I just think it’s sadder for him to be ripped from the ladder, Katniss to actually have a reaction other than just stare down at him, and it makes her dropping the bomb a lot more heartbreaking especially since in the book he dies as soon as the monster jumps on him, and in the movie he dies when Katniss drops the bomb. But it is just my personal opinion and I was sad at both intervals. I’ve only watched the movies once so idk if my mind was just too caught up in everything, tho

I think that the movies had a reason for why Peeta didn't lose his leg; and I think it was mainly to show how powerful the Capital's technology was. I mean, they created a whole game that they can 100% control, and sense the technology wasn't stressed a lot in the books, the movie decided that his leg being healed would show the power of the medicine in this time.
@lux2795 жыл бұрын
It's been a long time since I read the books, so this is more based on my vague memories and I'd like to hear others' thoughts on my memories, but I always really liked Peeta because in the books, his interactions with other characters were consistently interesting to me. I find it compelling when characters are very different from each other and there seemed to be a lot of very strong but emotionally inept or straight-up emotionally distant characters (like Katniss and Johanna) especially in the specific fictional world created in The Hunger Games. It made sense for people to grow up emotionally cold, so Peeta stood out as a rare emotionally sensitive and socially aware counterpart to those strong but troubled characters. I know that different people will have different favorites because so many of the characters are well-written, but I always connected to Peeta because in any work of fiction, I love seeing emotionally-charged character interactions and Peeta seemed to instigate those, especially in the first book. By the time I started the second book, I already loved him.

I LOVED what they did with Effie in the movies. I didnt really like how Effie was described in the books, but her big, colorful costume designs in the movie really show the true nature of the Capitol, selfishly colorful and bright compared to the districts. You can see this clearly in the scenes when she is in District 12, where she sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the dull grey hues of District 12. If you pay attention to her costumes throughout the movies, you can slowly see her change from a blind person who follows the Capitol into a truely kind person who wants the districts to be free (this can be clearly seen in her butterfly costume during the reaping for the 75th hunger games), and she is definitely my favorite character throughout the series. Amazing drawings btw, I love your videos!

I liked Peeta in the books before seeing the movie and then in the movie I found him pretty annoying and boring. He's meant to be "boring" or stable I think, but the movies sort of exacerbated it? I'm really sad that they just fully healed Peeta, as well, because his leg was a plot point in the later books. It's one of the only books where I like the epilogue because the "heroes" aren't exactly happy? I know that sounds odd but I like that they are still the same people who went through all the crap they went through and came out the other side worse for wear but kept on living anyway. It's a half happy, half sad ending and I feel like it fit the tone of the series really well and the movies did a good job following that. I really like how Katniss looks in your style! I like that she actually looks like she was malnourished bc its such a huge point in the book but I'm also really glad Jennifer Lawrence didn't look malnourished lol. I agree about Effie as well, because that first scene in the movie where we see Effie; she pops out against the very bland and plain looking background of District 12, which makes her unnatural looking in a lot of ways, even though she tends to have some part of her outfit be a natural but "exotic" thing like flowers or butterflies. I think this is one those series that could've benefited from being animated, especially with all the color and style of the Capital against the different districts' more natural and "bland" looking people/places. Also they could've gone full messed up lol. Sorry I went off on a rant about the series but all your comments reminded me of all the things I thought about when I read the books/watched the movies.

5:42 I myself am not a big Peeta fan, but the part I like, at least in the first book, is the way he interacts with Katniss. He’s so optimistic and Naive compared to her being pessimistic, world weary, and well versed.

You should do Divergent or The Fault In Our Stars next, it would be great!
We dont want 15 minutes of divergent 😂😂 I mean, the only decent thing in the franchise is the first book 😂 The other books, and all the films are quite terrible. The Fault in Our Stars is really good tho!😂😂

@@violinyay6632 Because she describes as having a dark skin in the books, her actor also has dark skin in the movies. The divergent adaptation is actually quite good except fOR THE AMITY SERUM SCENE, WHY COULDN'T WE GET THIS ONE SCENE?

Peeta Mellark is one of the most compelling characters in the series he’s kind, caring and confident but he doesn’t know his worth. His mother abused him, causing him to feel not good enough but what kept him going was his love for Katniss. That’s one thing that personally strung me the wrong way with Katniss in the first book she acts as if Peeta is her greatest enemy and I think that fact creates the dynamic of star crossed lovers because if you think about it the readers are somewhat like the capitol in the fact most of us don’t have to go through what they do. It gives Peeta an important role because he knows his chances of survival are low but he still fights, not for himself but for Katniss. Because his love for her is what is so compelling about him he has a great personality, he’s handsome, he could love anyone but he loves Katniss. Also don’t diss my boy Josh Hutcherson like that he was perfect for Peeta

The biggest problem I have with the movie adaptations is that they try to play it off as just some quirky romance/survival movie, when in the books, it’s about the oppression of minorities by an aristocratic powerful government. It is said in the book that the districts were made up of mostly people of color, but the movies chose to cast three white people as the main characters. They remove Peeta’s disability, and they change the context of Rue’s death (in the books, it’s significant as the death of a young black girl at the hands of the government). Katniss is supposed to be a strong, empowering female poc character that doesn’t spend time on her appearance- but instead, she’s a pretty girl with an “ideal body” and her strengths are downplayed. The movies by themselves aren’t terrible but compared to the books, they’re very disappointing.

I don't remember that part about the districts being made up primarily of POC. In which part was that? I always thought it was about oppression of the "ordinary people", not a racist thing.
@Diana-tl8pn5 жыл бұрын
@@steffis9806 It is mention that some district have a lot of POCs. For example, most citizens in district 11 are dark Skinned. While I would not describe olive skin as necessarily POC, the book do mention that most people on district 12 looked like Katniss if I remember correctly.
@kee17555 жыл бұрын
What does Rue being black have to do with anything?? It was tragic because a LITTLE GIRL died. Not just because of her race. The Capitol represented an oppressive government, not a government that oppressed POCs. Jesus.

I still stand by the books strongly. I have not read them all unfortunately because I can't get my hands on parts 10, 12 and 13 in the first version that was first released years ago in my country. They didn't print a lot of them and they were highly popular so that version is ridiculously expensive on the internet. They did a second release of them eventually but they changed the design of them and I don't think they made any hard cover ones that time around. It was from a different publisher, I guess they bought the rights after first release. I think the price of them was originally about 5 dollars when translated from our local currency which is standard for a book this lenght, but now they've gone up to 20 which is stupidly expensive even for a 500 page book, not to mention something that has like 200 pages.
