It's so hard not acidentaly brag. O usually forget I said something and I repeat it so everyone says I brag because I keep forgetting I already said that. And trying to be positive can be super difficult. I have gotten better af stopping myself from over fixing. Basically if you use a pencil you sometimes try to refit it so many times it will look terrible because of the eraser marks, of it had looked fine before you changed it. Hang in there budding and experienced artists out there! Merry Christmas

true tho I always feel like people will find me narcissistic if I say I'm proud of something lmao
@meganepelletier8534 жыл бұрын
@@snekboop9687 I think it really comes down to how you phrase it. If you just bluntly say that you love or hate your piece, you may sound like you're either bragging or pitying yourself. However, if you take the time to acknowledge what you like about a certain piece and then ask for constructive feedback regarding other aspects of the piece you're not so sure about, it shows both self-appreciation but also self-awareness regarding your flaws as an artist. For example, if you have a certain drawing or sketch you like and want feedback from your teachers, you can say that you like how a specific element came out/ the balance of the lines/contrast/expressiveness/movement (this indicates that's an element you selected and intend to keep in the piece). Then, you can discuss other aspects of the drawing you're not so sure about. When you do that, try to define what it is exactly that you're struggling with. Do you feel like the composition is a bit weak? Are you struggling with color choices (stylistic or technical), with angles, depth, contrast? Are you trying to emulate a style and struggling with the technical aspect of things? Are you looking for conceptual advice and perhaps seeking cultural/artistic references from your teacher? Side note: ok, sometimes you just like the dang piece the way it is and aren't looking for feedback. It's ok to say you like your piece, just don't obnoxiously brag about it. Semi-humble pride is fine. Praising yourself feels good sometimes too. That's a pretty long-winded comment, so TLDR: if you are to criticize your own art, recognize it's qualities first, and then explain what it is that you don't like and why you don't like it from an artistic/technical standpoint. It just sounds better ;) Hope that helps anyone struggling with the self-depreciating artist curse (coming from a self-depreciating artist 😅)

My friends have had to nag me about negativity towards my own art to the point where I get a telling off every time I mention in a group chat that I don't like something I made. And it's worked, because now I try to see the things I learnt from each piece instead of just the stuff I feel I messed up. I'm 34 years old. I went to college for animation because I thought that's what I wanted to do. As time went on, I realized I wanted to focus more on character designs, concept, illustrations, anything that wasn't the actual animation, because I also discovered I didn't have the insane levels of focus animators needed to get into the field. So I started focusing on those things, however, I was also dealing with some serious mental and self-doubt issues, which got so bad I think it really hindered me to really push myself further. After college I got into freelancing and I worked on doing kids books (for other people) for five years. It was fine at first, but as time went the one thing I never wanted to happen started to happen; I began to hate drawing. I began to hate it because I was pouring so much time and energy for other people and their projects that I never had the time or energy for myself afterwards. I struggle with anxiety, depression, and having ADHD, so I can be easily overwhelmed, and couple that with dealing with difficult clients, deadlines, inconsistent pay, and I wasn't just ready to quit, I was ready to flat out give up on life. I did quit, and ended up taking two part time retail jobs, thinking I was never good enough to really make art my form of income. That was roughly two years ago. However, I've slowly been drawing again for myself, and after what seemed like eternity, I'm loving it again, and thanks to therapy and better medication for my ADHD, my focus, my outlook on things have improved. Then I found your channel, Lavender. And I wish I had someone like you to give me all the advice and tips I've seen in your videos, because I feel like that was what I really needed back during school, back when I tried freelancing, back when I was so unsure of myself. In this video, when you got to the part about self-doubt and not giving up, it hit me really hard. I do love art; it's something that has helped me get out of a lot of tough spots mentally while growing up. I would even go as far as to say it's sacred to me. As someone that's in their 30s though I just started to assume that I missed that window of opportunity to make something of myself with art. But after finding your channel and watching your videos I feel like that isn't really true, and I could still try and make something of it. I still have time. I was one of those people that was so scared of failure that when it did happen I was too scared to try again. But I feel like I've gotten better, and I now know that when something doesn't work out that doesn't mean you have to give up. You can get back on that horse again. Thank you for existing.

Most people who look at art, don't know a thing about art, don't see the mistakes, and are pretty much just looking at it in awe that anyone was even able to make art at all. Most people are looking at your art and thinking "I can't do anything anywhere close to that good." That's worth keeping in mind every time you show off a piece. Personally, I made the decision a couple years back that I should just share everything I make (assuming it's actually completed and not abandoned, although I try to complete everything I start now too) and just expose myself to as much public embarrassment as I could until I got over it. The fact is, I received so much enthusiastic support and praise, including from other artists I know and trust, that rather than being a series of embarrassments, it was actually a big confidence booster and the quality of my art jumped just from that confidence alone. I know what my mistakes are, I'm always my own worst critic, but I can keep working on getting better. I compare myself to last year, not yesterday, and I don't compare myself to anyone else. As long as I see incremental improvement year after year, and I'm having fun with it, I have the motivation to constantly challenge myself, experiment, and yes, keep showing off what I've done. I do choose my audiences somewhat carefully. I know some art isn't for some audiences, but I have different people and groups I share with, through different means, and I try to make sure everything I do finds at least one other person to take a look at. Getting over that fear of criticism or embarrassment is an essential first step to finding your own creative voice and creating art you're truly passionate about. Whether amateur or pro, it's a lot better to be doing your own thing and loving it than being scared and inhibited.

I gave up on art as a career, I’ve been told that I’m not going to be able too make a career as an artist or that I’m gonna be poor. So I thought that I should be something else something more “realistic”. It was heartbreaking to be told that the thing I wanted the most was impossible. It’s been like this for months, I felt like I had to give up on the one thing that made me happy, I even stopped drawing. But you actually made me think I could be an artist, you made me think it was possible. For the first time in months I’m motivated to draw and too try and pursue a career as an artist, I want to thank you. I believe you are the reason I might be an artist, I just thought I should thank you for that. Ps ilysm

I doubt myself a lot, but I remind myself I can do better! I used to tell others my art was bad, but then I watched this video. And now I tell other younger artist the same thing. But now I’m learning so much from you! A lot of people wave me off as an artist, especially at school. there are just some people who believe that there are no rules to art, and anyone who tries to help people get better or teach are just trying to drag them down. "no art style is bad, constructive criticism is just making people feel bad", I don't really get it since improving your art and getting better is how you become happier with your art. like people say she hates certain art styles and she's only criticizing other people's styles, aka the anime style. (Even though she clearly doesn't). this is just stuff I found out about it, I don't know the full details about why, but their seems to be so much hate for good people who draw and just give advise. it makes me pretty disappointed in these people.

Why don't you try scheduling time for yourself to draw? It might seem weird to have to schedule in your free time, but when you're busy it can help you plan out your day better so you can actually have more time to draw. For me, drawing time is usually like an hour before I go to bed. It's not an insanely strict schedule or anything, but more like me glancing at the time and realizing "oh it's 10:30, I should draw now." Hope this helps!

3:30 Something I do is this: When I do a piece I take a moment after to pick a few things I'm happy with, a few lessons I learned while doing it, and a few areas where I can improve. (So 3/3/3) This really lets me kind of get the self critism out, keep in mind I did stuff I was happy with and also that it is a learning process. I then also have a few things to practice before my next bigger piece.

Could you do a video on how to stop drawing fan art, I am a young artist and I can't seem to be able to draw anything but my oc's and fanart.
@renjunkissr6 жыл бұрын
There really is nothing wrong with drawing OCs and Fanart. I mean, most art is just some sort of idea (like an OC) and it doesn't really need a backstory. One exercise I use is I pick out the first two colors, skintone, hairstyle, etc. to pop into my head and make a character based on those traits. You can also ask someone else to pick these out for you. Then you can also look on sites such as DeviantArt, Pinterest, and tumblr to find ideas!

okay, I have not gone to art school, but where I live you have 2 hours of art every week for 3 years of school (from grade 6 to 8, counting the sixth). I have now finished 8th grade and I can tell that I have improved, A LOT. So yeah, having an art teacher for only one hour a week (the other one was history of art) has really helped me improve faster! I'm not going to an art school next year, but from this experience I can tell that it's worth it if art is your dream! Hope I was helpful in some way, good luck reading the comment! ^^"

Maybe if u think ur better off learning art on your own and art school is just blocking ur growth as an artist...then maybe u should quit
@angrymcplatipus1235 жыл бұрын
I'd say it really depends. I'm finishing community college right now, and I can say that some of my classes have really helped me (like anatomy, painting and drawing classes), but I have also had classes that were pretty useless, either because it was unrelated to what I'm interested in (like ceramics) or because the teacher who taught it didn't give a crap (just one teacher to be fair, and she was fired for being shitty to students). I'm interested in making comic books(in a semi realistic style), so of course anatomy and drawing helped me, but painting also helped, since I didn't have a good sense of light or color, which wouldn't have been as aparent to me without those classes. That being said, there are plenty of ways to learn online, so if you're not sure about art school, I would recommend checking those out first, and see if they work for you.

Anytime I realize an aspect of my own art that I don't like, I try to either start looking for a bunch of tutorials related to it or search through a bunch of my favorite artists and try to see what they do about it and try to learn from them. Although at one point I was feeling kinda down about my entire art style in general, like I don't think it was _bad_ but it just wasn't what I _wanted_ and it was demotivating me from doing anymore art. I kept comparing it to other artists I loved and feeling like it didn't have that spark I wanted. Soooo I made a decision: look through the artists I admired and find out what specific aspects of their art I loved the most and was interested in trying (ie. I like this artist's lineart, I like this artist's eye-shape style, I like the way this artist shades, and sometimes even more specific details), and then merged them all together to try to create my own new art style. I made my first drawing in that hybrid art style and felt totally revitalized and motivated again, because it just had all of my favorite things. So I guess basically, when I started feeling down about my art, I tried to stop being mad at myself about it, I tried to _do something_ about it. I had a lot of fun just experimenting with new things and learning from those experiments!

I've been writing for eight years and have some small dreams of writing a fantasy novel in the future. But I've been dealing with some severe self doubt, and I really want everyone to realize that whatever you are passionate in, whatever you work hard at, you can do well. I consider myself my biggest critic, and until recently I never really thought I was that good at what I did. But I had enough people who believed in me, and it taught me to be more confident. So, find those people. Find those people who can believe in you. Because, maybe, if they believe in you, you can learn to believe in your own abilities.

Ah yes you really need to be positive of your art. I myself always judge my art but my friends and art teacher tell me that you should be a lot more positive of what you created because people will agree more on what you say because like you said if you keep dissing your art more people are going to start believing it and never buy your art. So I like that you pointed that out ❤️
