From what I’ve seen online, the objectively “bad” art is usually made as a joke by well known and talented artists (like “shitpost” art). This can seem daunting to beginners because what you originally thought was “lazy” and “rushed” is getting tons of likes!
@valerial9081

Well for me, in art Facebook groups, well made drawings barely get a few comments and some likes, while drawings made by beginners, really simple, lacking knowledge in anatomy or shading with an airbrush and black, is usually crowded with positive comments, which isn't bad btw, but I think that rather than telling them their drawing is perfect you could slip some criticism in there I don't do that anymore because I think I'm too blunt

@thegloriousmagician9100 Art being bad isn't exactly bad. It depends on the person. One might find "bad art" to be amazing, while another who's classically trained or educated in art thinks differently. So, think Hailey, she went to art school and will see things under the lense of techniques, patterns, gestural features, etcetera.

I mean, its not bad, since with what I've seen, most of actually "bad-looking" popular art/meme art are made by people with incredible skills that studied for years and once where also actually posting those artworks they whould spend hours on, the type to make your jaw open. Most of those actually do have their base followers set out, some live out of that and dispose of their full living time for that kind of thing. Anyone that is starting out, be someone fresh out of the art's bachellor's degree or some 10 y/o that decided to draw as a hobby just now, they'll have a hard time when trying to build a follower base.

The meme/animatic community isn’t talked about enough! I’ll give a brief explanation for those who are just hearing about it, A meme is ultimately a short video. There’s media memes which are funny videos, like vine and short non-art related trends, and there’s the art memes; which are short videos of art panels typically added with music/audio. This can be animatic or animation. These may also be called edits, but edits will use the already drawn art and scenes. There is three memes you’ll come across; which is art, funny clips, and gacha. Gacha is it’s own separate community built around a game by Lunime. It uses pre-made styles and where you can make characters and set them into scenes. There is a lot going on in that and I wouldn’t recommend falling into it with looking directly for fandoms, original stories, or not knowing it’s past problems. So, animatic and animation. Animation is basically a lot more, quicker-moving frames. Animation can also be without music while animatics typically go along with music. Animatics have more pause between frames and can be more picture-to-picture. This is like comics in movie framing (or layout), generally with more panels as well. It is like animation but slower, much like you’d see in story boarding in the first frame work of movies. Just like a movie, but you’re not seeing that fine print and several frames for every scene, most of the time at least. It’s its own style and much easier than animation. There usually a more sketchy or unfinished look to them as well, but it depends on the artist. Back to music. Audio plays a big role to all of these. Although animation gets away with it more without, both animatics and animation can be with or without audio. Animatics will usually follow an audio/song to display the story or meme. It makes it much more entertaining and fun for the viewers and artist. Most are like a music video but with OCs or fandoms. Fandoms are a huge community in these much like they are in the art community. If you have a comic, you might want to see if someone made one of these for you! If you enjoy comics, you need to check out the animatic/memes community. Especially if you own a comic or have a favorite fandom or character. I personally much prefer animatics and memes to animation, movies, or just a picture of art. I also watch more animatics then comics and have been lead from them to smaller comics I wouldn’t have known about. Go look check out each of theses, if anything it’ll be good knowledge to have if you’re interesting in an art career. :]

Thanks for giving this advice! I’ve noticed that since the Insta algorithm has been getting worse for artists, there’s been a lot of guilt trippy reel trends. I don’t think people do them maliciously, more out of desperation. If Insta isn’t allowing artists to be shown, it’s only natural that people want to ask people to engage with their work more. In addition to this, seeing other reels with these audios that have a lot of likes and comments makes it more appealing. However, it doesn’t sit right with me personally. It’s a bit sad that artists have to beg to get attention, but I guess it’s an inflated market. It does often feel like low effort content like selfies and conventionally attractive people lip syncing get more attention, which can be discouraging when most artists spend hours on their pieces. Obviously, artists are not entitled to attention just for existing, but these are things that I’ve noticed.
@ellebastonart
@ellebastonart Жыл бұрын
This so much!! I see some artists who are dissatisfied with how their art is being distributed by the algorithm and are very open about how sad it makes them and basically telling people to interact and stuff (putting stuff like "please don't let this flop i worked so hard on this" in the description). And it's always so awkward for me to see this kind of stuff because on the one hand I completely understand how they're feeling because I struggle a lot with my art not getting the visibility I want, but crying about it online for all of your followers to see and asking for interaction so straightforwardly just seems really coercive to me and makes me uncomfortable. I think the advice on this video is super helpful and important, and is just focusing on one area of a larger method of giving potential followers more details about your art and OCs that they can hang their hat on instead of venting about what's wrong with their art style (plus I think these days most people are too preoccupied with "cringe" or having a reputable image associated with their art that they ignore participating in silly memes and other adjacent things when that could be a low-investment way to help give them more online recognition)
@queen_ch3rry

I couldn't agree with you more! I really, REALLY do not like the trend lately with reels that say, "lower your expectations to zero!" or "wow, you must have tons of followers" where it feels like begging. Especially when those same reels have 20k likes and the user has several thousand followers. I've spent years learning how to draw cars, and posted on IG since 2018, and I still rarely get over 45 likes, so the beggy/whiny content just irks me 😅

I have some pet peeves from being on art tiktok for a while that make me immediately scroll away, if anyone wants my opinion: First is when people are revealing their finished art by erasing the sketch to reveal the art underneath and take AGES to erase it. I don’t know how or why this became a trend, but the way I see it, there’s no point to it other than to be annoying. Idc how talented you are, how interesting your sketch is, or how many likes you got. If it takes you longer than 10 seconds to erase, I’m scrolling away. Making quicker videos in general is also typically a good idea on tiktok, esp if you’re just showing an image or two. And if you’re doing a speedpaint, make it SUPER quick and add a popular audio in the background, preferably a fast paced one that will hold people’s attention. Another pet peeve I have is when people have text walls explaining their extensive lore. ESPECIALLY when they use one of the text to speech voices, forcing me to listen to it all. I’m not saying the lore is super uninteresting or badly written either. It’s usually just because it’s a text wall overlaid onto a still image and my attention span is garbage. The attention spans of most tiktok users are just awful so you have to be aware of that when posting. This last one isn’t a pet peeve, but I have noticed if you’re going to post a video of an animation or pmv (or just any video, even not art related) putting text explaining what it is will get you more views. It doesn’t have to be anything too in depth, it can basically be nothing, (just a bland “look what I animated”) as long as people know what they’re watching. If they don’t they’re more likely to scroll away because they don’t care what’s happening. Sounds harsh but it’s true.

If you find a well known artist that tends to make the same content you do (and also has a history of being nice and interacting with followers) you can make them some gift/fan art and they will generally share your post on their story with a shout out (you can also confirm this as a condition in advance to be sure you’ll get something out of it). This has the added benefit of appearing to a pre curated community of people who enjoy original art unlike the double edged sword that traditional fan art is, so if those people find you through that shoutout they’re much more likely to stick around and appreciate your own original art.

I wanna add one of my own tips here too! This one is specifically for KZbin Shorts and TikTok: Try to avoid posting just straight up speed paint videos. They work for some people yes, but most of the time a lot of people do not want to sit through a minute of watching you sketch and color. Instead, take short clips of you drawing irl! This means the camera is always moving and that already makes it much more interesting. It also removes some more boring parts of the art process like drawing that one line over and over and over again :D

This is so funny because I’ve actually been using all of these techniques to promote _not_ my own work, but some niche stuff I wish was more popular because I want to have someone to talk about it to. x)

I've never made an OC. I could never come up with characters. I thought I didn't have what it took to make my own things, so I ended up drawing random faces and objects with no reason behind their existences.
@ArtisanAsteroid

I have an idea!! You could try assigning the objects to the faces and come up with why they use something,is it one of their favorite items,etc.

@@ArtisanAsteroid Good idea, but my problem is bigger than that. I can draw super cute characters, but I can't create stories for them.

@@oliviapenelopehope4497 THIS RIGHT HERE ^^^^ I can draw characters perfectly okay BUT I just never make a backstory for them. I either forget or just not think I'd need one- That is, until later on, where I use a character for a comic or a rolepay and realize that this character has nothing that influences their actions or emotions whatsoever

idk if anyone else already said it, but another thing you can do is focus on the things about your OC that strangers can relate to. I don't mean their personalities or how likeable they are - I mean their motifs! An animal that they're associated with, their favorite flower, their style of fashion, their color scheme etc. Because visual motifs of, let's say, bunnies or dark academia-dressed characters will strike a chord with people who already like those things and they'll be more likely to engage with your posts, perhaps even follow. Also if you make the motifs the focus of your post, you then have an excuse to tap into relevant tags that people who already like bunnies or dark academia are searching for. Of course you don't gotta make every single artwork of your OCs be focused on motifs instead of story, but making an artwork or two every once in a while that is motif-focused can boost your engagement. Also secondary tip: certain professions/lifestyles have very popular tags, like plague doctors, ninjas, magical girls, mad scientists, nuns and priests, knights, mob bosses etc. Even astronaut OCs and adopts were trending for a while b/c of Among Us.

Another idea for y'all is: Draw your character in a t-pose with the face you want for an animation, then import the picture into an animation app. Then, cut out each limb, and rotate them to easily animate it!
