These shots have been around forever. Julius Erving, George Gervin, and Michael Jordan were the first few to pull of a jelly. However, it has only been referred to as "jelly" in the last 2-3 years. It was made popular by a group of New York City high schoolers called "jelly fam" who loved to do jellies in high school games all the time.

Also, as you can see, Kyrie is the player who uses it the most today, along with Curry and Ja Morant. Other players like Lebron, Jrue Holiday, Donovan Mitchell, Kemba Walker, Westbrook, and D-Rose also use the jelly

Yeah Isaiah Washington, Markquis Nowell, Patrick Walker and Naz Reid. I remember back in 2016 Isaiah Washington vs. Shamorie Ponds was a real debate in nyc HS circles (not like scouts but the actual city), but it’s pretty clear now even though Morie’s nba time is probably over.

They do it to avoid being blocked, not because they are showboating, and guys have been taking these kind of shots as long as basketball has been around, if you are under sized, you're not going to go straight up everytime on the layup or else they would get blocked by the bigger player every time

When they fake a shot attempt on one side and lay it up on the other it's called a reverse layup. Usually they do it to use the rim as protection against a shot blocker

It's more about avoiding to be blocked than showing off. People have always been taking these shots. Basically every baller takes these shots now and then, either becasue he's desperate and has to get rid of the ball or because he's seen a little gap and is trying to kind of squeeze the ball through. And yes, we miss those very often. The average baller will probably make 3/10 of these.

The hardest shots to put in aren't layups globally talking, it's probably fadeaways, not that much people master that, Chamberlain, Jordan, Kobe to quote a few legends, it's so hard to shot being off-balance, not even talking about adding turnarounds fadeaways or Dirk's One Leg fadeaway etc Otherwise its more about specific personnal techniques like the Skyhook, never mastered by anyone except Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself

George ice man Gervin laid the foundation for this kind of shit by introducing a version of it called the finger roll Michael Jordan popularised it with by literally hanging in the air so long that he could just stay up there, wait for his opponent to reach the ground and then finish using a "jelly". Then Kyrie just brought it to its extreme and showed that smaller guards could use it to their advantage.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Too bad Luka hasn't played much basketball in his life because he cannot quite appreciate how much athleticism and skill it takes for these players to pull off these incredibly difficult circus shots.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I sure there is a soccer equivalent that would help him understand the magic of what he is seeing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ As a defender, I would hate to see Ja, or Kyrie coming full speed at me with the ball. That never ends well for the defender. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
