If you're not from the American South, you have to google the "Waffle House Index." The Waffle House Index is famously (but unofficially) used by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to determine how bad the infrastructure damage is after a hurricane makes landfall. If Waffle House is serving its full menu, that means there's minor or no damage. If Waffle House is serving a limited menu, that means there enough damage that it's creating problems with electricity or the food supply. If Waffle House is closed, that is a RED ALERT with either severe or catastrophic damage.

Hell! For years they didn’t even have locks on the doors! Unless it’s completely destroyed by a storm, they WILL be open! Usually one of the only places to eat right after a big storm. I’ve known many WH employees. Know quite a few that have pulled 24+ hour shifts following a major storm. They usually will feed first responders for free during a crisis like that.

(source : i'm a retired locksmith familiar with lock/security related law in many locations throughout the USA.)

the simplest way to describe *_Apple Butter_* to someone that's never had it before : get yourself some applesauce. spice it with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and mace. simmer it slowly until it thickens up to a soft butter consistency. run it through a fine-mesh sieve to strain out any lingering fibers or bits. toss it into a jar. when it cools, prepare to have your mind blown and life altered.

Noah was on US MasterChef and his cooking was wonderful. He respected Chef Ramsey, and even commented about him on the original Jolly upload. Waffle House hasn't made it out here on the West Coast, but it would make a killing if it did. Legend has it that weather people in states that have a Waffle House check to see if it closes during severe weather, i.e., hurricane, then they know to tell people to evacuate, just because Waffle House is open 24/7.

As a florida boy the waffle house comment being open or closed is the truth they only close for the worst of the worst. You can literally be in a hurricane and eat waffles or steak and eggs! Sipping on a coffee or sweet tea while the wind is kicking at 75mph roofs coming off of the buildings around you, flooding all around sandbags at the door and they are still serving it hot and fresh with generators going full blast.

Being from the south, I've never meet anyone that likes eating a plain bowl of grits. Only people I seen do it is someone that is trying it for the first time, not liking it, then swearing they will never have grits again. Grits is one of those things that is good when you mix other stuff into it. Adding cheese, bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage, shrimp, all manner of things in the grits will make it so much better.

Grits is akin to Italian polenta which is made to be sauced, like pasta. You don't eat it straight. But to be fair, the grits in the video seemed to have a "healthy" pool of butter on the top so that would be OK.

A new way that I've start eating grits is I will cook the grits first, then mix in egg batter as if I was cooking egg fried rice on high heat. Keep mixing until the grits/egg mixture has gotten fluffy. Can mix in other ingredients if you want. I think it's delicious!

Being from the South, I can completely say that the Waffle House really is a whole different experience compared to most other places. The food is pretty cheap and you can watch them make it right in front of you. In regards to the Waffle House Index, it is completely true, a handful of years ago it was the only business open and serving food after Hurricane Matthew completely decimated us and shut the whole area down.

They definitely found the most stereotypical Waffle House customer. A guy in overalls trashed off his ass in the middle of the night just cracking sarcastic jokes with his friends while knowing the menu like the back of his hands. Definitely the right tour guide for Waffle House.

Waffle House only closed during natural disasters, usually hurricanes since it's only in the South. They have a hurricane tracking center. They are among the last to evacuate before a hurricane and they have jump teams prepared to be among the first to go in and reopen to feed the first responders and locals. So yeah you could say they are open 24 hours. Of course sometimes you do have to wake them up to put in our order if it's slow.

I’m proud to say the I’ve eaten my fill in Athens, Georgia at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning to celebrate a Bulldog victory. I can guarantee that story is the same in Knoxville or Lexington or Clemson or any other Southern town!

Waffle House is a chain with many restaurants in different states in the US not just in the Southern USA but also in Ohio where I live. The diner style Waffle House is open 24 hours 7 days a week. You can order breakfast foods at any time as well as order lunch or dinner American style food as well but Waffle House is best known for their breakfasts. The prices for the menu items is also very cheap with the food tasting consistently good. it is rather greasy food but we are talking American diner style cooking here. Waffle House is great especially after a night of drinking or partying like The Jolly guys and Noah the guy in the middle are a bit buzzed LOL

That's not sandwich bread that is a specific type of sliced bread called Texas Toast. It's in its own category. Similar to how croissants are still bread but they are still not bread.

It is a chain, I am in Ohio and have one at the end of my street. It has come in handy many times, especially if you work late hours. I laughed when Noah swiped his breakfast sausage in the syrup, I grew up doing that, too.

We had a kebab shop open in my city in California about two years ago but they close at 10pm. I tried to explain they should be open after the bars close at 2am. Also, grits can be very good or very bad depending on how they're prepared. Like rice, they are a vessel to support what you put on them. Add butter, cheese, bacon and shrimp and they are amazing!

There is a genre of places that sensible people almost only go to after a night of heavy drinking but they are an essential part of the partying culture: Waffle House, International House of Pancakes (Jolly reviews it), Krystal, White Castle, Steak 'n Shake, WhataBurger (Jolly reviews it), Denny's and some others I've probably forgotten. Arguably the best location for such a place on the planet is the Krystal at the CBD end of Bourbon St in New Orleans--You can start drinking at the other end of Bourbon and work your way to Krystal.

I've seen several fights start at Waffle Houses on the weekend. Met a girl at one on a weekend. We overheard her talking to her friends, so I talked them into sitting with us. Also, there's a disaster rating system based on how many restaurants have been affected in an area. And, in some smaller towns the restaurants are able to reopen so quickly that people are able to get a hot meal soon after.

I’ve played music in bar bands for over 4 decades. Waffle House was almost always the after party. Bar close at 2, equipment packed and loaded in the trailer by 3:30-4:00. Then WH usually til the sun starts rising. Gotta be out by 7, because that’s when the breakfast before church crowd starts rolling in on Sunday mornings.

In the states, we are quick to use a slice of loaf bread to make a burger or hot dog if we don’t have a bun. It’s quick, often cheaper, and gives the hotdog or hamburger a different flavor. We may even toast it to make it fancy. 😂😂

Watching the BBQ video with this directly after tells the story of their real experience in America with it without the food! I find it hilarious and am glad they hooked up with a Master Chef with such a quality reputation, humanitarian bent, but humble to the core. People either love or hate Waffle House. I've dined in some that were really good, but be careful because some are just disgusting! If the server and cooks seem to be in good mood, your food will probably blow you away. When you can tell they're just getting their dollar, prepare for slightly underdone or overcooked food with a lot of grease. Best to order a cup of coffee while you look over the menu. This will give you time to gauge the mood of the restaurant and escape if you sense it'll be a bad experience.

Waffle House is life. I always love omelets cooked right on the grill, and the fact you can tell them how many eggs you want in it, and they will cook it. If I'm just feeling like a real fatty, I get the occasional omelet with 6 eggs. It's a monstrosity but it's so good.

Waffle House started in Georgia and it is mostly in the South. I live in Tennessee and feel lucky to have 4 of them within a 15-minute Drive from my house as well as a Cracker Barrel, also another good place to go for southern cooking. I eat at Waffle House at various times of the day, usually once a wee. Yes when I was in my 20s and 30s and out partying, Waffle House was the place to go on the way home. Now I show up in the late afternoon with all the old people for a late lunch or early dinner 😊 Being a southern girl, I am very particular about my grits. Cooking good grits is an art form and if they are not just right I won't eat them. Waffle House grits depend on 2 factors, the cook at that time, and how long the grits have been sitting since they were freshly made. The longer the grits sit still and warm, , the more sticky or lumpy they are. It's like having a really good mashed potato , not too runny and it's not too thick. And they're right, waffle House is scrambled eggs with cheese is the best. I get my with hash brown scattered with chopped tomatoes in them, a side of grits if they're good, and raisin toast. I get them to cook my bacon crispy so I can crumble it up in my grits. Most Southerners think sugar in the cornbread or grits is sacrilegious. The only kind of corn we want sugar in is moonshine liquor. Lol

Waffle House is a diner style restaurant, small, and mostly food that can be cooked quick on a flat top grill. Hamburgers, melts, ham, thin stakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns ect. Nothing complicated. Waffle House is in about half the states.

Waffle House is a true southern staple. You have to try them if you ever get to the States. Apple Butter is what is left when you grind up whole apples to make apple cider. Add some nutmeg, cinnamon and you're good. Grits are best with butter and honey or butter and maple syrup.

Back in 2010, I got a second job being a server at a new Waffle House being built. Before training even started, my new boss/manager told us what we the employees all get paid. It is literally next to nothing. Needless to say, I didn't take the job because most of my sales and paycheck would have been only commission. Yeah, I couldn't live off that...

Just went to the Waffle House after The Cure concert…close to midnight. The grits are not good but if you add cheese and butter it helps a lot 😂. Also, if a Waffle House ever closes… we’re probably getting nuked. My sister worked as manager for a period of time, extremely stressful job… the manager part. Anyway, this was awesome! 😂

All American Cheese isn't fake or "plastic". Waffle House actually uses real american cheese instead of "imitation cheese product". American cheese is just a holy amalgamation of other cheeses. Theres Cheddar im there, colby, a few others. Blended together and formed into rectangular blocks, which is then sliced. So it isn't "natural" in the sense that theres some weird Americow species out there making American milk for American cheese but it is real cheese.

When you get to visit the US, if you're not in a region with Waffle Houses (or if the local ones look too run down), Denny's is a similar place that I'm pretty sure is nationwide. It's usually not quite as cheap or decadently greasy, but it is often cleaner and has less of a reputation for weird late-night violence.

Waffle House can be good or not so good. Depends on the staff a lot. I've been in some pretty good ones. I eat at one damn near once a day. The grits can be good there, but I've had some that were not good too. Depends on how fresh they are and how they were made.

No lie - when I was in the Atlanta area, Waffle Houses were everywhere, and it was not uncommon to be able to bd sitting in one, and be able to see another in the distance, down the street. Kinda like 7-11 or Duncan Donuts on Long Island NY.
