Such a helpful video as another first-gen college and law student trying to navigate my 1L year. Thank you for sharing all of this with us. I’d love a video as well about the networking discussion you mentioned!

I want to go to a law school so bad but english isnt my first language. I’m from the Philippines, and i’m afraid i’m not gonna be able to deliver impactful statements like most lawyers do which discourages me a lot... its not that i cant speak in english well its just that I feel intimidated.... You inspires me a lot.

Don't worry you are not the only person who do not have English as their first language. Try reading and writing in English everyday eventually you will be better. Do not loose hope. If pursuing Law is what you want then go for it 👍👍

English is not my first language and I am applying to law school now. I know you must feel insecure and scared, but don't let this stop your dream of going to law school here! Always try to improve your English day after day and the law school will help you don't feel insecure with your English because you will have to talk to your professors and colleagues. Pursue your dreams, even if you feel insecure because I'm sure the end result will be wonderful! 😀😀😀😀.

Hi Caroline! Thank you so much for being transparent and open about your experience, it's extremely inspiring! I had a question about the diversity scholarships that you mentioned. I'm applying to law schools for Fall 2022 and was wondering if those scholarships are only offered to current law students or if I could apply to them now as a prospective law student? Thanks!
@LegallyCaroline3 жыл бұрын
ah sorry if I wasn't clear, the diversity scholarships are by firms for their summer associates, so you'd apply for them when you're applying for a job there! I'm sure there are also diversity-based scholarships available to incoming law students, I'm just not sure if firms do that/what that looks like!
@criminallaw9573 Жыл бұрын
@@LegallyCaroline Now that Affirmative Action has been outlawed by the Supreme Court, those folks pursuing "diversity scholarships" won't be admitted to the colleges and law schools they dreamed about in the first place, or certainly not based their race (no need for the code word "diversity"). Law firms will act in accordance with law schools, colleges, and universities, and race (again, that's what the code word "diversity" actually stands for) will no longer be taken into consideration for hiring purposes. Too bad, so sad. . .

Omg this video is so helpful! You should be so proud of yourself. You stuck to your goals and didn’t settle for less than exactly what you wanted and you succeeded! I never knew that you could interview for international placements. Were there a lot of opportunities abroad during EIW?

there's always a few! I know there were several opportunities in London and Asia at our EIP! I'm so glad you found the video helpful!! and yes, I knew what I wanted going into EIP and wasn't ready to settle (although it resulted in a very stressful experience haha)

hey Caroline! this is such a helpful video thank you :) I was wondering, what are OCI interviews & offers based on? is it your resume, your 1L first semester grades (if these come in in time?)? does undergrad GPA/LSAT still matter at that point? thanks so much!
@LegallyCaroline3 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand, undergrad GPA and LSAT doesn't matter at that point anymore! It's all based on resume, 1L grades (which will be out on time) and your interviewing! As well as what practice fields you've expressed interest in, and business needs! :)

Thank you for sharing your advice about how to get interview for job offers. I would never expected for someone who is engaged would hinder someone who wants to work in their law firm. I do want to ask, what happens if you don't have any callbacks, after getting the assistance from the law school? Is there any other alternatives or do you have to go back to the law school and ask for assistance? I am hoping to apply law school for Fall 2022 once I finish the Jan LSAT test, still nervous but busy studying away. Your videos help me motivate myself in wanting to go to law school. Can't wait for more of your vlogs!! :D

most firms pay the same, so at that point you're looking to firm culture, the kind of work they do, how you'd fit in both in the short term and long term, and how you like the people you've met!

According to the ABA for Law Students, “About 90 percent of the nation’s law graduates do not get hired through OCI. OCI is just one avenue to legal employment and, depending on your academic credentials, career goals and practice interests, it may not be the appropriate avenue for you.” If you think going to law school is a quick ticket to a well-paying job with a large law firm, think again. I run into unemployed, and severely underemployed, lawyers all the freaking time as I go from courthouse to courthouse for various clients.

But she went to HLS and got many HP as grades. She isn't the average Bear. She has better grades than Cece.
@criminallaw9573 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBjorn6 If you say so. Outside of the very top law schools, OCI is reserved for the top ten percent of the class, generally speaking. Of course, at low ranked law schools it may be reserved for the top 5 percent of the class, or not even exist. In addition, while at most law schools only those in the top 10 percent will get interviews with large law firms (top 5 percent for Cravath, Skadden Arps and other extremely grade-sensitive firms) not all of those who get interviews will get job offers. So, at the end of the day, perhaps 8 percent of the class at most law schools will get a job offer in Biglaw. Oh, and BTW, the average tenure of a first year associate in a large law firm is about 4 years. So even if you "do everything right" and get a better paying job than 92 percent of your classmates--which is an extremely challenging thing to do, of course--your "career" in big law may be done in 12-36 months. 7Y of your life (4Y college, 3y law school) probably over $400k in tuition, books, and living expenses, maybe closer to half a million dollars, for a job that lasts 2-3 years. Pathetic ROI.

I think she definitely exaggerates it for satire, and firms are definitely getting better at ensuring diversity both in gender and race, but it's not perfect yet!

Hey! I am starting at a lower-ranked law school in DC in the fall and if I do well enough 1L plan to try to transfer to georgetown or northwestern. Would you mind sharing how OCI worked for you given that you transferred from michigan to harvard?? I worry about that since OCI is typically at the end of the summer, and the grades the firms are looking at would be from my 1L school and not the school I'm transferring into. Thank you SO much!!!!
@LegallyCaroline2 жыл бұрын
You do OCI with the school that you transfer to! So I did mine with Harvard. I don’t think it matter too much as long as you have grades good enough to transfer

what’s the difference between big class law firms and smaller ones? do the bigger classes offer a lower percentage of return offers?
@LegallyCaroline3 жыл бұрын
most firms give return offers to everyone! larger classes usually have higher attrition rates post-grad! like most people leave the firm after a few years! just because it's impossible for everyone to make partner!
