Private clubs, were they once speakeasys?
@jamesrawlins7355 жыл бұрын
The most famous private clubs in NYC actually predate Prohibition by decades. The oldest existing one is the Union League, which was founded in 1862 (brother of a similar club in Philly that was formed by supporters of the Union during the Civil War). Knickerbocker club started about a decade later by members who were unhappy with Union club because it wasn't "exclusive" enough, allowing too many "lesser" elites in. While I'm sure some became the equivalent of speakeasies for some, it was basically a way for the very rich and powerful (always white men) to gather in secrecy in affluent surroundings - and they still continue today
@jamesrawlins7355 жыл бұрын
@Long Schnozzed Tribesman That was my family - I'm related to Major Gen. John Rawlins, who was Grant's aide during the Civil War (then became Sec. of War in Grant's cabinet). Yankee blue and true.
