The reason he says "you'll never be on the Supreme Court" is because there are only 9 members and they have lifetime appointments, so one of them pretty much has to die for there to be an opening

@@frutrace No FDR was never able to pack the court with more judges. Doing so would have given him so much power that there was immense political opposition to it. Increasing the number of SC justices is pretty much impossible.

Bar Exams in the Philippines take four whole Sundays-a four hour exam in the morning and another in the afternoon. The results don’t come until six months later, and the results vary every year. For the 2018 exam, only 22% passed.

Tbh, you might want to look into statistics about the way the law field has changed. I saw some reddit post recently where lawyers/former law students talked about the fees of law school, the wage curve, saturation in the market, and other factors of the field that might make law a less attractive field than it used to be...unless its truely your passion and dream. I dont want to discourage you (and it's not like I'm educated on the topic), but there are a lot of things ppl don't bother to tell you before you enter a field of study & accure a bunch of debt. I found out some things about my own field the hard way after I graduated. Tldr; talk to as many lawyers as you can and ask for statistics. Be fearless and ask for the unfiltered truths about the field, good and bad. It's better that you make a fully educated decision, entering with eyes wide open and determination than graduate with heaps of debt and a sinking realization that this isnt what you thought it would be. Good luck! 😁

i wonder how much of this is the cultural differences between america and the uk! just as a heads up, i think it's still a pretty common presumption in the states at least that lawyer is like doctor which is Theoretically Easy Money. also, the character who was 'pre-law' hasn't left undergrad yet! pre-law is an undergraduate degree that's meant to prep you for law school. so when he said change majors it's more possible for that person because it's just undergrad and ur major choice isn't locked in the minute you enter uni like it is in the uk. this was really fun to watch, i really enjoyed listening to your opinions on this!

After being a paralegal for 14 years, I can honestly say that almost every lawyer I have talked to has recommended against being a lawyer. It can be a soul destroying job. It's the only thing I know how to do now though, so even though my sister (a lawyer) suggested I don't become a lawyer - I am actually taking the bar exam in July. But my advice to people is to not go to study law until they have worked in the real world and know how crushing the law can be. Everyone gets mad at lawyers. The judges yell at lawyers, the clients yell at lawyers, lawyers yell at lawyers. At any given moment, someone is probably upset with you.

Dude my whole family keeps telling me to go to law school and I’m taking paralegal classes and telling them I want to try being a paralegal for a few years and then see if I want to be a lawyer. The bar exam scene is actually quite realistic (in terms of casting, haha) to what it would look like in the US. Since law school is a graduate school that requires no specific prerequisites beyond a bachelors degree, many people do it as a mid-career switch. Even if you graduated college at 22 and went to law school immediately, you’d then be 25/26 by the time you took the bar. Personally, my plan is to take 2 gaps years so I’ll be 27/28 by the time I sit the bar :)

As both a huge fan of Shakespeare and the child of a lawyer, I always found it ironic that "Kill all the lawyers" is one of his most quoted lines, and usually for a laugh. Cause anyone who actually knows the story of Henry VI pt. 2 can tell you, the character who says that is Dick the Butcher, a murderer trying to sew anarchy so his group can seize power in the chaos. And those pesky judges, lawyers and due process would get in the way.

honestly you're more likely to end up doing work for medium-sized businesses who want to do pretty mundane stuff, the idea of working for huge corporations at a massive firm is "big law" that only a few of the top students get to do, so if you don't want to do it you don't have to. you could do wills and trusts for normal people, that is probably highly rewarding because it gives families peace of mind when it's all said and done

A lot of people in the US take the bar later in life. To be an attorney in California, you generally have a bachelors degree and then attend law school after that since it’s a graduate degree. Also, school in the US is prohibitively expensive so it takes some people a long time to finish schooling. The bar exam in California is notoriously difficult, and practicing attorneys need to take tests throughout their career in order to continue being bar certified. I have a lot of attorneys in my family, and I was considering law at one point. I just feel your comment on the age of the people taking the exam in the show was insensitive, since that is the reality in the US. I’d love to hear if you’re still in love with the profession 30 years in. Also, people really do hate attorneys. 🤷‍♀️

I can relate to this song so much. The references are more about 90's pop culture. My feelings about law have been different between when I started Law school, when I ended it, when I started working and when I melted down. Now I gave up law and office work altogether and now life's all pepsy and colorful again. Don't be a lawyer for the wrong reasons, Do be a lawyer if it's right for you.

Eve, I know its been a year but another practicing lawyer on KZbin reviewed this music video as well. The channel name is LegalEagle. outside of advice he also does reviews of movies and shows where there are representations of law and the US court system. He practices in California so you may find it interesting regarding US law.

The “nuclear option” is just a procedural rule in the senate. It doesn’t affect needing a majority of votes for confirmation, but it has to do with the ability of the minority party to prevent a tally of votes from even happening. The nuclear option makes it harder for the minority party to stop the vote, so actually without the nuclear option it would be harder to get onto the supreme court due to the partisan pressures to deny the other party from doing anything they want.

Actually, there are plenty of people who enter the law later in life. I'm 32 and in my first year of law school. As for those allowed items in the bar exam, they're legally mandated under the Americans with Disabilities Act as reasonable disability-related accommodations (hence why wheelchairs are also listed).
