This was not the detective's first rodeo. She was called to the scene because a person died under very suspicious circumstances, and the last person to see the victim alive (by her own admission) was his girlfriend. There is absolutely no way Sarah Boone was not a person of interest from the very start - but detectives aren't legally required to immediately reveal their suspicions to persons of interest as far as I know. I think it's safe to say Sarah came up with this strategy to have the interviews excluded on her own, based on her extensive legal experience watching courtroom dramas on TV. I bet every other lawyer previously assigned to her refused to pursue it and that's why she fired them. She overplayed her game a long time ago, and this judge sees through her.
