Spoiler for second episode on this list: Olivia is concerned about the “accidents” that Ashley is having and her behaviour that she describes. Basically it turns out Ashley is hurting herself as it’s the only way a parent pays her attention as both to her is is when she’s hurt. They are both too busy with their music careers. It’s a case of significant emotional neglect without physical component. Kids were provided for, well dressed, fed well, private schools, get whatever they want, parents “donate” a new library to Ashley’s school to stop her being expelled for her behaviour (and to stop the school insisting she sees a therapist). The full works of a parent who will do anything for their child, except actually be there, to emotionally show they at loved and cared for. Ultimately the mother promises the court to take care of her daughter after realising this. But then flies to London for her sold out concert tour the very next day. End of episode

@@lindseymcdougall9774 I know it's a bit off topic, but your insight reminds me of something I learned while traveling in Asia. I learned that in some ethnic subgroups (including "gypsies") theft is not a crime it's possible to commit, and in those subgroups taking something from an adult is what a child will do when the child needs that adult's protection. Sorry for the aside, but the idea that a child would commit a crime to get attention rings true as can be to me. You're right.
@lindseymcdougall97748 күн бұрын
@@poonyaTara I can understand that out look. Certainly better than in the episode with the kid hurting herself. I work with kids and I’ve seen quite a few cases where it’s a little kid in genuine need of some more attention (as opposed to a kid who gets lots of attention but always want to be the centre of attention. Met plenty of them too) and they don’t know how to ask for it. In my work it’s more that they act strange which can look like seizures, or pretend to be sick as that means their parents spend more time with them. Thankfully most cases I’ve dealt with haven’t been like this episode and the parents have been able to address whatever it is the kid is feeling insecure about

The second clip is so heartbreaking, a child neglected by her mom emotionally but legally SVU can’t do anything. Realistically Ashley is gonna do something drastic to get her mother’s attention and will get herself killed or she’ll find that attention somewhere else. I wish Olivia was able to do something to help her 😞. I wish emotional abuse was taken more seriously by the law

I know this show is fiction or just inspire by real stort but if a child got neglected that bad in real life, can be a negatif impact on them when it come to wanting love. They would do anything, even if it dangerous just to get that attention...

I remember this episode..... I think a cps worker said to Olivia something like "Which is more important - your 1 unhappy child or my battered 20??". Honestly I thought that at first too, that it was a dramatic mom trying to get back at her husband for sleeping with her much younger sister. Yet there is a reaction from Chelsea later in the episode, where her dad puts a hand on her shoulder and she’s near tears and asks ‘mom, can we go home, please?’ And it switched… He was guilty, and it only became more obvious when the middle sister Mavis also came forward with a similar story
@merchantfanАй бұрын
But kids also do that when they're looking for assurance or feel guilty and don't know what they should do. That's what complicates child abuse cases
@nicatineАй бұрын
Unfortunately, kids having parents alongside interviews when it comes to abuse or suicidal thoughts is still a requirement to this day and I hate how that's still being practiced...this isn't going to make the kids speak up and be honest with everyone. It just gives them more trust issues. All they're looking for is an escape and safe space.

12:18 "They don't abuse her, and they don't criminally neglect her," is a huge statement about American culture, specifically the implication that there are forms of child neglect that aren't criminal. I'm an American who learned childcare in a region of the world where wealthy families worry about children being kidnapped for ransom. Here at home, I tell myself that neglected children aren't my problem...until they endanger themselves. I've dealt with parents imposing on me by denying that their children are theirs because they want me to take care of their children for free so they can keep neglecting them and gabbing with their friends. I've been falsely accused of kidnapping my own children. I once talked a child out of running away from home and escorted him home only to be accused of trying to kidnap him because the father had more pride than honor. American parents are comfortable with neglecting their own children to death, but if you refuse to allow them to die then your behavior is suspicious and they label you a predator. I just ignore their nonsense and keep doing the right thing. What really hurts me to see is single parents doing their best who trust their child between ten and twelve years of age to do something an eight year old would be safe doing only to run afoul of child "protection" services. It's predation disguised as benevolence. A full 99.3% of complaints to CPS are made in order to break up families with a minority or disabled member in order to free up resources from those families for the complainer's own intended children, and if that doesn't tell you that American society condones child neglect then I don't know what does. And negligent parents are abettors of society's condemnation of child predation.

Am I the only one who thinks the reason Ashley doesn’t have a therapist is because her mother was more worried about her career and social standing, than about her daughter’s wellbeing? I mean, Ashley is clearly going to get worse and how long before her acting out causes her to get serious injuries, and maybe even, die? I’m not saying Olivia should’ve kept sticking her nose in that business, but it’s clear that Ashley is pretty much on a downward spiral.
@KomoliRihyohАй бұрын
But Olivia is right, though, if a bit overly optimistic. The CPS worker was right to try and give Olivia some perspective; Ashley *was* in potential danger, but there are hundreds of other children in immediate danger who needed help more than Ashley.

Yeah. I see Olivia as someone who’s more passionate about her job than some of the other SVU members; although that does lead to her crossing some lines she shouldn’t cross. I guess I just relate to her more, because I’m more of a passionate person and I don’t have kids like Stabler does; so, there’s that as well. Let’s not forget that in the beginning; Ashley was the one who reached out to Olivia and the latter only got majorly involved when Ashley admitted, TO HER FACE, that she hurts herself because of her neglectful mother. I just didn’t want to say it before because I was scared of backlash/people basically calling me an idiot for trying to see things from another angle.
