In the early 70s, my aunt was abandoned by her birth parents because they were told she’d only live to 4 years. My mom’s family immediately took her and did everything to care for her. They believed that nobody should be treated like an unwanted burden, and as long as someone is still alive, they deserve compassion for any amount of time they may have in this world. She ended up living into her 30s and even got married to someone who knew her time was limited. She was an absolutely incredible person who always made the people around her feel good, and she spent every year she had being unconditionally loved and cared for by her family and husband

My heart sank as soon as I realised the reason the kid was having such a big and violent reaction to her "not looking at him" and "not crying" was because she was dead. He knew, consciously or not, that something was wrong, and he was trying to get any sort of reaction out of her to see if she was still alive ("I wanted her to cry.") Awful. Kids with RAD (reactive attachment disorder) are not "sociopaths," they just need help to form proper and healthy attachments.
@jessicaarmstrong5035
@jessicaarmstrong5035 3 күн бұрын
Sociopath is an incorrect term for children with RAD. As you said, all they need is help to form healthy attachments. Some may end up with anywhere from PTSD to Borderline Personality Disorder but sociopathy is rare in children with RAD. However, since this episode looks like it was taped quite a long time ago, I'm going to give them a break. Most likely during that time period, that was the prevailing theory.

@ Totally agree! This was filmed 30-ish years ago so their definitions of mental disorders were definitely not as thorough or refined as ours (despite a long way to go from here still.) It’s really interesting looking at older media to see how far we’ve progressed with our understanding, and really enlightening as to why we keep learning and exploring. :)

Not only does it exist, it's gotten worse over those years. More and more children are born every year with physical and mental problems, parents give them up to these agencies rather than taking on the RESPONSIBILITY of raising such a child. I get that some families may have financial burdens, but this is why you shouldn't have a kid until you are financially prepared. I'm 39, almost 40. My finances are not very good due to other things going on in life, I may or may not ever have a kid, but if I do I'd rather it be when I'm financially *secure.* This is what everyone should be doing.
@zzing
@zzing 7 күн бұрын
@@Suisfonia Being financially secure means different things in different situations. Having two perfectly healthy children is a lot cheaper than having one child with a ton of issues either physically or mentally. If everyone prepared for the worst, we wouldn't have any children. There are a few about and some are extremely dangerous. I knew one who was raised by doting grandparents, who made excuse after excuse for him when he committed increasingly serious crimes, even after he stabbed one of them. He drove them both into an early grave and is currently serving a long prison sentence. Another, more obviously disturbed, was already in secure 'care' by the age of fifteen, after committing some seriously depraved sexual crimes, and is unlikely to ever be allowed to live in the community.

It's very sad when a child turns out this way. Understand that this child is different from a psychopath who is born that way. He has become a psychopath due to abuse. Essentially, he's been so abused that he cuts himself off from everyone around him and now all he feels is rage and anger. It's going to take a lot of therapy to help this child deal and most likely he won't get it because he's an orphan. No one cares what happens to orphans. They just keep shipping them from home to home with no regard of what he will become. This is how people like Ted Bundy and BTK started out.

Spoilers alert: Because Maryanna Petrova wasn't insured under the Connollys, it meant that her operations and care would have to come out of their pockets which was why they they tried to find baby brokers and adoption agencies for her to be placed. Only every time they got asked about the girl's health and told them about Maryanna's spinal tumours and cancer, they got rejected - one baby broker said "she has a snowball's chance in hell until she had a new family". So the next time they visited a baby broker who told them the Waverleys were looking to adopt another child, the Connollys lied saying that Maryanna was healthy which led up to the start of this episode. Also, when Adam, Abbie and Jack argued about deals, Abbie decided that Kostov and the Connollys shouldn't have deals because they were as bad as each other. The jury found Kostov and the Connollys guilty of second degree murder

@@backinblack03nope, “sociopathy” is antisocial personality disorder and that can’t even be diagnosed until a person is nearest to adulthood (late teens at best). While “psychopathy” and “sociopathy” share some indicators in common, the diagnoses are not interchangeable. It’s clinically inaccurate to apply a “if it’s not x then it must be y.” You’ve demonstrated the trend of armchair quarterbacking mental health conditions, despite having zero qualifications to do so (watching KZbin videos doesn’t make you a pro)🤦🏾‍♀️

When I was a kid, I had all these idealistic dreams of adopting children from bad situations. But I've learned in later life that you're going to be taking on so much more than you can handle. Even a professional child psychologist would be hard pressed to deal with the issues so many of these poor kids have. It's not their fault, it's what the adults around them have done to them, but still, it makes adoption infeasible.
@jessicaarmstrong5035
@jessicaarmstrong5035 3 күн бұрын
It takes an incredibly empathetic and good person to be able to deal with adopted and foster children. You also need an awful lot of training. You can love a person all you want and want to do good but if you aren't prepared to deal with what's coming to you then you will end up doing more harm than good. I always say that if you're taking on someone else's child, make sure you are well-prepared and have lots and lots of help to deal with the issues that are coming. This episode was sort of an extreme example but even if you get a kid that was taken from their parents, which is the bare minimum of what has happened to these kids, you need to be prepared that they will have a hard time trusting you. It's not bad to have idealistic dreams to help children. At least you'd be willing. But I always say make sure you know what you're getting into and have a boatload of help.

Attachment Disorder, even Reactive Attachment Disorder does not equate that a child has no conscience or no empathy and you can't diagnose a child that young as a psychopath or a sociopath. They may have poor conscience development or even brain damage and yes, sadly there are children or adults who can't be helped but it's wrong to portray children who are victims of abuse and attachment disorders as though they can not be treated. It's not an easy thing to talk about but these are not criminals. They are very sick children with injured brains and hearts. And even those who have killed, if taken into the right help young enough, have been successfully given a second chance to live without hurting or being hurt! ❤‍🩹

This is what happens when our adoptive agencies have so many reasons to disqualify parents from adoption. In most states, a misdemeanor drug charge can disqualify a couple. There are no federal regulations concerning out of country adoptions, especially 'illegal' adoptions involving children from dozens of children.

Omg this is so silly, the idea that 1- attachment disorder equals sociopathy but 2! The fact they’re saying a VERY YOUNG child has “no empathy” and is capable of killing a baby because of this plus the video? They just bypassed the fact a child of that age can’t be diagnosed as such because children of that age are still learning those social concepts… it’s hilarious! Yes a child of that age can be showing traits of heading towards a disorder but it’s not a cut and dry “they’re a sociopath!” There’s a multitude of things it could be ESPECIALLY considering the child’s history. Fml.

It would most likely be classified as ODD-oppositional defiant disorder. If the kid turns 18 and still has severe symptoms, it would turn into Conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy). Some kids “grow out of” ODD, but for others, the kids do have sociopathy for life.

Why cant these people adopt American kids?
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 2 күн бұрын
What American kids? It's a supply problem. Few babies being put up for adoption in Western countries now. Demand is far greater than domestic supply. Some turn to surrogacy because it costs a lot to source an adoption and pay for the process anyway so why not pay more for a surrogate, where you can keep close track of the mother's and fetus' health, as well as in some cases, the couple can use their own egg or sperm, or even embryo, and have a biological tie to the baby. Back in the 80s and 90s there was a supply of (usually black) babies being given up for adoption by crack and drug addicted mothers. Many babies were underweight, malnourished, and in some cases in drug withdrawal, and had some health problems so it wasn't difficult to adopt such babies. Once the crack epidemic passed, there were fewer babies being put up for adoption. Look around: lots of unwed mothers raising children or couples who've raised children but never got married. Back in the 50s and 60s, that wasn't socially accepted so mothers would put their babies up for adoption.

What's concerning is the "this isn't a couple of teenagers who killed their newborn because they were scared" statement. Like what? I don't think that's any less of a crime. Wtf is wrong with our justice system?
@winter-jager
@winter-jager 6 күн бұрын
She wasn’t implying it was less of a crime, the teens could just get more sympathy because they’re young and people expect them to be impulsive and make bad decisions. Not that the decision in this specific instance then shouldn’t be punished but because they’re young they have a higher chance of being rehabilitated. Typically in court they weigh the severity of the crime based of age and what the people did and what resources they had available to them and why they did what they did. Again not saying it would at all be justified but the teens would have more sympathy typically.
