It's not an excuse, it's a way to promote understanding. He could be medicated and given therapy and potentially do good things on the inside, but he has simply shown that he cannot be in free society. It's a way to suggest that we either correct or confine individuals where the ripple effects of their crimes are too great. Maybe the awareness of his obvious personality disorder(s) brings awareness. I have one family member with a personality disorder who does and did well in life, and another who I'll never stop advocating for, who does longer and longer terms of incarceration with each of their crimes.

I feel very saddened for both the mother & grandmother, as their understanding of mental health diseases, and coming to terms with the vast pain that usually endures a lifetime. Sadly, in certain cultures this has remained a taboo, often leading to SHAME! Therefore, there is no Seeking of professional help. Both of these women can do great & good works especially in communities where more attention is needed. We ALL MUST BE ABLE TO ACCESS AFFORDABLE MENTAL HEALTHCARE NOW; the percentages of people diagnosed and the younger aged children with illnesses is staggering; suicides are increasing. Now, Mr. Brooks….., he for whatever reasons chose not to seek out, or maintain care he does need. He was extremely careful with every one of his words throughout those 2 hours to never, ever, actually admit to the crimes. In layman's terms, his "apology" was for the pain and hurt this "tragic event" caused. He never once put himself as the cause of their pain. In his police interview, when they were still being vague about the severity of the injuries he caused, he kept asking them to tell him how bad it was, but it wasn't because he was worried about the victims or the fact that he had maybe just ended people's lives, he simply wanted to know what charges he would be facing, i.e. murder or not. He kept saying, "Just tell me what I'm facing" etc. Not knowing yet if he had killed people or not, what he was concerned about was the charges. Himself. Absolutely disgusting.

He rolled his eyes all through the victim impact statements. He slapped his chest in a mocking way when the victim impact statements were read. He didn’t shed a tear. He focused on how HE felt disrespected, not on how disrespectful HE was to the families of those who lost loved ones or who had their lives flipped upside down. He doesn’t feel remorse for the victims. He feels remorse only for himself. So while he sits his rest of his days with bars for walls, he can do all the disrespect and eye rolling he wants. Well said. Perceived disrespect is of course deserved and understood. He has a very simple and underdeveloped set of emotional and mental tools at his disposal. Completely reactionary, without giving time and space between his perception and his response to his perception. My POV is that he believes he deserves respect for being mentally unwell, and that the victims showing him 'disrespect' is them not understanding that he feels he is a victim to that mental illness, which is something that takes over him and he has no control over. I understand that to some degree, but he must understand that his body is the emblem that represents their loved ones deaths, even he believes it was not 'him' acting in what he would call his 'right mind'........ The mentally ill one that took over the real 'him' is also him. So if he sees himself as having two distinct personalities, it does not mean they are not both within his realm of of control. Of course they are within his realm of control. Perhaps it felt as if it was not within his realm of control. He must really question who he is, but instead of just getting caught up in himself and how feels, far far far far more, considering how others feel. It's clear that he has an established disregard for the wellbeing of others, in the pursuit of his own wellbeing, without having realised that his wellbeing and the wellbeing of others are deeply interconnected.

I think the judge inadvertently revealed the motive behind this. When he was berating Erika Patterson on the jail phone call when he was locked up in Milwaukee, he was demanding she put money on his bail. That's it. He was enraged that she gave him no money. So the story he told the detectives about getting money from her was somewhat true. He was trying to bully her into giving him money, that's why he took her foodstamp card. No child of his will even WANT to be in contact with him. His mom didn't even want him living with her, and prefered he live in the car with Erika. Never once was she present in his trial, she didn't lie for him with the cops, honestly, she's finally free of him. Judge Dorow is a true inspiration. I hope many people in law, and in law school can look up to her as the true hero she is. The victims of this senseless tragedy are beautiful people who saw something I don’t even want to start trying to imagine, and still came together to help each other. I pray that every single one of them gets the healing and closure they need. I’ve never met any of these people, but their families and their own statements make me wish I did. May their community come back stronger together.❤ For Dawn Woods and Mary Edwards. You keep lying to yourselves and your community of him being mentally ill. If it makes you feel better living in a lie, so be it. But just so you know, your son/grandson was nothing short of what nightmares are made of. He is cold, controlled, an abuser, a bully, a terrorist. He put many lives in danger, and he seized many hearts with fear. That is not a mental disease or illness. That is evil, that even God himself has to one day judge. Hold onto your lies or your false hope, Ms. Woods and Ms. Edwards. The rest of the world knows what an evil coward looks like, and his name is Darrell Edward Brooks Jr.

I disagree! The true inspiration, the woman who people look to as a “hero” is DA Sue Opper. She worked diligently for a year preparing for this Trial. She went to the scene that fateful day a year ago. She assisted and supported almost 100 victims and their families. DA Opper did all of this while leading a team of Attorneys at a busy DA’s Office. Moreover, she sat in that courtroom during Brooks awful behavior and and antics for weeks, never losing site of the the verdict. DA Opper is the true hero here!

I just get a laugh that his Mama, Granny, and him literally thought they could convince Judge Dorow to hospitalize him. That shows they have no understanding of the laws that surround mental illness. For one, Judge Dorow didn’t have the means to commit him to a mental institution because it was not one of the options available…plus DB is not incompetent and I believe in order to sentence someone to a treatment facility you need a court order and you have to be found incompetent. We must also protect the mentally fragile folks from danger. They are very vulnerable, and easily manipulated. DB is more a danger to others as opposed to himself. He belongs in prison. That’s the only way to keep society safe from him. But, as DB says, he’s “made peace with God!!” (Which is a lie…he’s using God to manipulate people) But yeah…he’s made peace. We’ll see how long it takes for him to bow down to the other inmates. I have a feeling they’ll put him in his place!!

@@windywednesday4166 I hope so too! They all need to file a civil suit against her. She bailed him out on November 19, and he attacked the parade on November 21. And by her OWN words, she KNEW he could be dangerously violent! 🤦🏾♀️🤬 This reminds me so much of how the kids at Parkland kept telling the school that Nicholas Cruz was dangerous, yet he was able to buy a gun. They told their parents, they told teachers, but because of "No Child Left Behind", he was able to murder 17, and traumatize countless more. Often (not always of course, but often) people around a potential mass murderer DO have an intrinsic _instinct_ that this person is dangerous. THAT'S when that person needs to be stopped. . . they SHOULDN'T be bailed out, they SHOULDN'T be able to buy a gun and lots of ammo. A friend of mine was SA'd in third grade by the exact same boys who the kids all KNEW were a danger, but the school refused to expel them for bringing weapons, or for beating up the other kids, or for basically terrorizing the whole school because of this insane belief that it would be unfair to kick them out. Until it was too late for my sweet friend, and they SA'd her. It basically ruined her life, which she tried to end as a child. And even now, as an adult, she suffers from PTSD and depression and is too traumatized to even work anywhere where she has to be around people she doesn't know. There are evil people in the world, and I'm sick to death of apologists like Dawn Woods coddling these evil people and enabling them. God bless Waukesha, and all the families and survivors 😥❤🙏🏽
