Northern Illinois here. My lawn has stayed green throughout the past two winters. In spring 2023, first mow was in March 20th and I had 6 cuts in before any neighbors even started in mid-May. This spring, I already mowed a week and a half ago (mainly to clear leaves and debris). But, with a few days in the 70’s and a rain shower, she’s starting to grow. I enjoy the mow, but I also enjoy a winter break.

My lawn never goes dormant and its about 6-7 inches tall. Just outside of Philly also time to cut.

SE lower Michigan, just mowed my front lawn at 1.5 inches, then at 2 inches bagged up, all the dormant grass cleaned out the beds, too.

I live just outside of Philly and lawn is already greening up. Daytime temperatures 50s to 60s. Early this year. Ready to do pre emergent within a week. Weather is crazy this year! 👌

What rate of N did you go with? I hear mixed ideas on the grass' first spring and curious to your thoughts and applications. I will be doing a hybrid program of AMS. I took the advice of pounding it in the fall and it really paid off. I slit seeded 45k at 3lbs/k and the majority came out great a few areas that should self-correct and few areas that I will have to reshape. Thanks again for this series. These videos are on repeat, love watching and comparing to my program and results.

Hi Jake! I'm by Chicago with KBG ProVista as well. Should I mow now and how low? The last two seasons I've struggled with the ridiculous looking flowerheads in May that makes it look like I'm growing bushes in the lawn so I'm trying to figure out the best mowing plan for that. If you mow too short, the seedheads grow in short and make it virtually impossible to get rid of.

High 40s to 50s and Just put down my crabgrass preventer! When you think it’s too early for crabgrass is when it comes outta nowhere! Never have a weed and a thick green lawn before March ends! 🤷🏻‍♀️😊

just noticed my bermuda lawn started to green in certain spots around the house, as I was spraying for the DAMN Poa!! Thought I got ahead of it with Pre and spot spraying but here we are.

Unfortunately common pre-m like prodiamine aren’t that effective with poa, products like spectacle flow and simazine are usually pretty good at controlling it. I would do some research on it though, I personally haven’t got around to using them due to the $$ I just deal with any poa outbreaks early on with certainty.

With pre emergent, you don’t need to wait, get it down early and you will be protected.

40s in New England and not quite there yet. Did pick up all the branches off the lawn from the wind storm last week. My application in Fall has brought some color to my lawn already. 2 more weeks maybe before I begin my Spring program.

What rate did you apply? How many sq ft is the yard? What kind of grass are you treating? What part of country?

Yeah it's definitely better to be too early than too late and warm weather is coming quick. I've already got two mows, aeration, and pre-em down. I think lots of people are gonna get caught by surprise if they wait until perfect conditions to start.

"Waking 'er up?" Fertilizer does not wake the lawn from winter dormancy. Warm temperatures do.

I know. It's just a fun play on words. Kind of like moonlight. We all know the moon doesn't produce its own light. The sun lights it up from afar

Great video! One thing I've been confused about is the nitrogen amount for the first early fertilizer. I thought you weren't supposed to put down that much nitrogen as your first application. What are your thoughts on this.

Yes. Not on Conventional Cool season grass. This is part of a project I am working on. The grass isn't where I want it to be so I'll be pushing it extra hard this season.

No worries. Better already down than late. Plus, the snow will ensure it's watered in once it melts.
