Lawn Sweeper Won't Sweep - John Deere / Brinly 42" Sweeper Issue & Repair

Ironically I found an issue with my sweeper right after the 2 year review. For a while it would miss patches of cut grass intermittently, and I assumed it was because of the brushes being too low and the terrain, but it is something more. Lets take a look!

I will say this, your channel is growing and will grow fast, your very knowledgeable and not to many channels i know of that has the X series lawn tractors, and i have a 2022 john deere 1025R i absolutely love and i enjoy watching your channel and your john deere products, keep the videos coming friend.

Thanks for posting this video. I have been looking at the lawn sweepers and was wondering about the John Deere’s. I have a garage full of green as well, but older ones. I now need a sweeper or material collection system.

I did not, reason being is I was going to order 2 sets of gears and pins, and the total was going to be like $35 or so, which I thought was great, then shipping to AK was going to be like $48. I wasn’t going to pay more than the items in shipping. Ended up getting 1 set on eBay for like $33, free shipping. AK sucks for getting stuff. If I were you though I would get them straight from Brinly, will likely be the cheapest. The gear was only like $7. Deere dealers should have them for this model also.

Why don't they lock the gears on these things? You could do this by putting longer pins in the gears for a buck or two. I'm guessing it's because you need a wheel to go into "idle" when you are turning sharp or it's rough on the plastic gears inside the wheels or it's handy when going in reverse to have no rotation but... my logic tells me the wheel is simply going to slip on the grass anyway so why not just lock them. Any ideas?

Well I don’t know the exact reason, but yeah, stress on the plastic gear can be a big part of it. I would also think that inside wheel may actually jump in a turn if it was locked… but yeah, there is a lot of weight there if you are pickin up grass clibbins, so you want to relieve as much stress from those parts as you can.

I'm sure you're right. They wouldn't make millions of these things with that design if it didn't work and didn't have a good reason. Mine wasn't working well for this same reason. I needed to get my yard cleaned up this weekend so I put a long dowel pin in one side and removed the dowel pin from the other side. I figured one side was kinda safer as it wouldn't create a gear lock up situation. Worked really great and I got my yard dialed in. I got the new parts today so I'll fix it the right way before I use it again.

Ridiculous that a JD product has devolved to this. Now they are moving cab production to Mexico. When I buy one, even after griping, guess I'll get a spare gear. Thanks

Well like I say in the video, this is a common issue on all sweepers, and JD doesn’t make this, so can’t really put all the blame on them… it does suck though about quality these days, all the Deere garden tractors years ago were built solid, now days ya have to get an X5XX or X7XX to get anything good…
