Does soil or soil type matter when you are trying to have great grass? Today we are going to take a deep dive into soil, soil consistency, soil make up, the effects if any on turf quality, and what this means for the health and vitality of your lawn.
Soil takes many forms, each and everyone of us may have a unique growing situation when compared to another. In this video I want to show you how to take good grass to great grass and answer the question does soil really matter?
For me, I have always taken a soil first method. It is paid off many times over with how low maintenance my lawn is. But in this video, I'm going to show you how I grow great grass on sand, and what I do differently between a sand base system and the clay base system.

They are thick and lush for sure. It was incredible to see how quickly the main lawn came back to shape after the RGS “catch up” application. 32 ounces went across the whole lawn about 2 weeks ago. The change was incredible in a short time.

You’re probably the best at explaining complete lawn care of all the lawn channels. I’ve been micro-feeding my lawn years but when I tell people I feed my lawn weekly to biweekly they think it’s too much work but I’m doing way lower doses. What is your bentgrass fertilizer/micros regime? I’m in El Paso, Tx growing 007 bentgrass and people don’t believe it’s even possible.

I keep my green pretty simple. The only secondary’s it’s had are iron and sulfur this year, no minors yet. Otherwise I keep it balanced, NPK

@@Lawncology we have sandy but fertile soil here in the lower valley. Lots of pecan trees, cotton, alfalfa and even corn. I do varying levels of ammonium sulfate with sea kelp and humic acid. I do soil acidifier with micros a few times a year as it is mostly micros and 6% iron. I actually went back and watched a few previous videos. They didn’t come up on my feed and answered some questions so I appreciate your response. I guess if what I’m doing works why change it. It’s interesting to see that despite the extreme difference in region we are not far off from fertilizer programs.

The 315x is a smaller entry level. I’ve had a 430x and upgraded to 450x. I have a walker mower as well. I have had the Automower 5 years. I still use the walker for spring and fall clean up and short mows to start and end the season. If it’s windy, no matter. If it’s raining, it doesn’t matter. If it’s hot or cold, it doesn’t matter, it gets mowed. It has its learning curves. It mows mostly at night and looks like a golf course in the morning. It gets stuck and has its downfalls but having it mowed all the time and looking pristine everyday is great. It’s given me more time to do fertilizer applications and address lawn issues.

I increased my kelp this year and noticed a few things. #1 My color has been fabulous. #2 My need for nitrogen has been cut in half. #3 No fungus issue's other than snowmold which was there prior to the increase of high kelp usage.

This makes me rethink using sand as a leveling agent. Very interesting video John. BTW, I am applying Air-8 and RGS this year every 2-3 weeks and my turf is just loving that mix of stuff. Using less N than I have in years! Such great products. Thank you for designing and producing them!

Thank you! One thing that can happen with sand topdressing (excessively) is capping. It’s not the end of the world, but you can get roots that stay very shallow and dry out

Great content. Thank you! I would love to hear you talk about how often to run a robot. In the manual mowing world, more is more. But with robots, I’,¨m starting to think maybe i shouldnt have my robot kn for 10h on a small lawn…. This is my current setting, 7 days a week, 10h every day, on a 150 square meters lawn. And my cut is NOT as clean as yours, even though I change knieves😢 every 7-14 days. I initiated an experiment today, i will cut it for 5h, every second day… for one week. And see if that makes it better or worse.

What do you recommend for amending rocky clay type soil in Midwest? I'm year 3 in new construction lawn where they basically laid sod on top of rock. Anytime we get temps > 88, it's like that rock underneath cooks my KBG roots. Great video as always, John!

Hi John, When you last evaluated my soil test, you said I didn't have much evidence of organic matter in my soil. Is their a particular N-ext product or combination of products to throw in my fert tank that will optimize soil organic matter? My CECs were 19.8 Thanks!

Hey bud, let the roots do the work. Keep the rgs flowing as part of your program. Drive them deep and let them shed and decay.

Again, it’s a less water more often scenario. Depending on how deep your sand goes, you can do a heavy watering once weekly followed by every other day with less

I agree 100. I’ve been managing and building USGA golf course major for 24 years. I’ve done a lot of studies under microscopes on warm season cool season. Different soil types. Porosity CECCHI. Etc. when it comes to managing turf u need to concentrate on soil before tissue. USGA greens are tricky especially near pine trees. Heavy nematode problems. I can talk forever about working pga major championship with some of the biggest supers there are. Thanks to UMASS’s turf degree plus hands on helping me learn. You have great content!!!!!!! Great ferts and biostims dude.

So the answer is yes and no 😆 I think the green benefits more from foliar feeding. The grass blades pulling the nutrients into the roots instead of out of the soil. Less wasted fertilizer which matters if you are budget constrained
@Lawncology

I think you are right. There’s simply no reason to load that system. Having both mediums has been extremely eye opening. I tried to treat the green in a similar fashion to the lawn last year and I believe it was a main reason it suffered so greatly this past winter. It’s a different animal now and I need to be ok it with a PGR very soon.
