Jeff, I hit a dirt mound with my 7.5 Briggs, kept running, then quit. I followed this video, sure enough, shorn key. Replaced key, and new blade installed. Flushed carb, tried to start, rattling in lower engine. I tore it down, valves ok, piston ok, but I found a shear key in the oil pan (!) which had bounced around and did a little scratching on the valve gear shaft but perfectly useable; I made sure of timing, I put it all back together, wondering where that shear key came from. (It was purchased new from Sears 3 yrs ago) Won't start. new air filter, adjusted coil with Oreilly's card- I didn't have my .012 guage. Plug looks good but didn't change. I'm looking to your videos to find some answers! Thanks for them, you're a good teacher.

Best pull off the spark plug pipe first before doing anything with the flywheel, because as you're turning the latter, you might accidentally start the engine (admittedly, the chances are low, but not zero), and if that happens, you're in for some serious pain

I usually use a paper calling card to adjust the magneto gap. You can hold the blade while torquing the flywheel nut. Remove the spark plug or put clothes-line in the cylinder. Change the spark plug. Brigg has valve guide tools to replace valve guides. You use a drill to machine the guides. Brigg also has flywheel pullers.
@stephenfletcher75673 жыл бұрын
Take note, I thought I had the same problem then discovered the flywheel nut was torqued so lightly it could be almost loosen by fingers. Initial flywheel key didn't seem out of place or damaged so I tightened the flywheel nut to around 50 pounds. That did the trick.

At 13:43, Jeff tilts the entire mower toward the carburetor side, which is usually not recommended because oil can flow through the carburetor and into the air filter. (Experts may do operations however they please). Jeff also wisely uses a torque wrench in his flywheel reassembly.

Older Briggs stationary engines with the heavy cast iron flywheel, had a soft alloy key. Everytime you removed the flywheel you would replace the key, even if it showed no damage. It is much better to sheer a flywheel key than damage the crankshaft of the engine.

Can you use a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the flywheel or is using the knockoff tool the best method?

I always use the big flywheel nut by putting it on flush with the top of the shaft. I use railroad spike tapped tightly into place under the flywheel then tap the shaft with the nut once or twice and the flywheel pops off with no damage to the nut, shaft or flywheel. Works like a charm every time.

overheating is very uncommon unless it is low on oil or the engine is run without the engine cover on it. It is an aircooled engine so it needs the engine cover for maximum airflow

Jeff, i have a older 1988 Snapper high vac walk behind mower with a 3.5 hp b&s model # 92902 3271-01 i was going to replace the head gasket. when removing parts recoil starter gas tank bracket for throttle linkage i noticed a ground wire broke off one end goes to deck by discharge chute the other end broke off near where coil wire goes to stop switch this motor don't have original carb it has a pulsa prime conversion kit it's hard to tell where this ground wire connects to any ideas? thanks for you're time, Tony
@JeffsLittleEngineService6 жыл бұрын
you can disconnect or cut the wire do not let it ground. CAUTION: I think it is a safety feature when it grounds it shuts the coil/magneto/spark down. Probably meant shut it down/grounds it when the chute is raised??
