So here's something I forgot to talk about in the video: filling the fuel filter with seafoam. Seafoam is a cleaner and lubricant as well as a fuel of sorts, so by filling the fuel filter with seafoam instead of diesel, you displace the air to make priming and starting the truck easier after the filter change, but also it will give a little cleaning action directly into the injectors and injection pump. Additionally, they advertise that Seafoam will act as an anti-gel as well which is helpful in the winter months. All this is info they put on the can, but I had a few questions about it, so I figured I'd explain my thoughts.

When I was a tech and we had a same similar issue on GM cars. Like the Monte Carlo chassis I think 2000 and up. There was a bulletin of inadequate grease in the intermediate shift causing wear and slop. As I owned one the fix was to just re grease the shaft. But that was a pain. So on MY car I disassembled the shift and cut a tiny groove in the male male splines and drilled a corresponding hole in the outer shafr and tapped for a Needle grease zerk. And it became part of my maintenance routine.

@2:21 I take issue with this because this is not a "WET" system the oil filter goes into bypass at a certain PSI so it filters nothing after that point untill you get below that PSI threshold. You can get the same coverage by just maintaining regular service intervols on your truck.

I also experienced the intermediate steering shaft issues in multiple years of GM trucks. replaced upper as well as lower shafts with upgraded shafts and each repair seemed to get better but not until I spoke with a Dealer Mechanic and was given a tech sheet that advised fill the boot with grease at firewall, Pack it full as possible. only the was the problem solved. I have the same problem on my 2020 3500 HD Denali. Time to investigate problem. Great Information here Thank You.

I would have some serious concerns with using a 5micron filter on the main engine filter from a flow standpoint. There’s a reason the factory doesn’t use a 5micron. The finer the media, the higher the pressure drop across the media at any given flow rate with a rising curve. My guess is that filter may be in bypass a lot of the time. To run that fine a filtration rate, one needs to be running a kidney loop system.
@brandonbrown3600
@brandonbrown3600 2 жыл бұрын
That filter should be lower pressure so it should be fine. The biggest part is maintaining flow. As long as their is enough media/surface area of filtration flow should be good as well. The high pressure system on that truck will toss a code if it starts to struggle to get fuel from the lower pressure side so itll warn you before issues.

That steering shaft 'clunk' has been an issue with the GMC & Chevy full size pickup for over 20 years. during the first ten years GM said to grease the spline shaft, then they said to 'pack the slip joint in grease'. The one on my '06 was replaced 4 times under warranty and they finally got it right. Got lucky with my '14 and '19 models but heard from enough buddies to realize the issue was still around. Drove a new '22 at a dealer and the clunk was back. Just a pain in the butt and GM will not issue a recall as it is not a safety issue. Hell, it took them 6 years to admit there was a problem.

I put ceramic magnets in my oil filter, down into the body. Then I pull them out clean and put into the new filter during an oil change. This way the filter grabs the large particles and the smaller magnetic that make it through get stuck on the magnet.

As a current gm tech. The only time I start to look at aftermarket filtration funny. Is when I have to change the filter. So long as the info I find is positive. I won't raise a red flag. As a current lml owner. I understand having the extra filtration and water separator to protect your investment. Also, I remember way back when with your water leak. They did an ugly job "fixing" the problem. I would contact gm direct and see about having them properly resealing it. Its become more and more common, especially on the half ton chassis.

I see some people don't like your fuel filter, well Donaldson is a great filter, way better than a stock A/C Delco. The thing to remember is the better the filters are, the least likely to have engine issues. Cheap filters will let more particles, Have you ever seen what a fuel pump does when to much crap plugs into it, engine destroyed. For you Diesel guys out there, you can save money with blue def if you top off at a truck stop or a place that has def next to the diesel pump. but also keep a couple spare jugs in your garage.

Re filter specs (micron, etc).... The micron rating is really only half the spec. The other critical piece is the efficiency at that particle size. Even a screen door is a 5 micron filter; it's just not very efficient at it. Also, while "bigger is better" is usually the case with particle capacity, you also have to take into account pleat dimensions, pleat count, and material. Synthetic materials can hold more than cellulose, so a smaller synthetic filter could possibly hold more than a larger paper one. Not saying these weren't good upgrades. Just something for folks to be aware of when they're comparing filters.

Two things. Never fill a fuel filter down the centre. Fill the small holes around the centre and be careful that everything is clean before you even open the box. Unless it filters from centre out which is very rare. Two. You could probably have fixed the rattle in five minutes with some tape a syringe and some thread locker. Get some mid to low strength locker and inject it into the gap around the shaft in a few places, tape up any holes and around the top to stop drips and cut off the air so it will solidify. Should be a safe permanent fix.

@Educalifa
@Educalifa 2 жыл бұрын
@@anomamos9095 Red thread locker has quite a bit of strength actually... which is why you usually need to heat it up before undoing bolts with it. I'd bet that if properly used on a collapsible steering column it'd take less energy to break your sternum than to break the bond on the thread locker.
@anomamos9095
@anomamos9095 2 жыл бұрын
@@Educalifa . Who said you should use high strength red lock tight? BUT it’s still not as strong as you think it is. Thread locker doesn’t exactly work by glueing the threads together, it actually fills the gaps between threads vastly increasing the surface area of the contact between threads which significantly increases friction once it sets the glueing effect is secondary. As a glue it is not as strong at bonding as CA super glue and it is fairly brittle . Apart from all that the collapsible part of the shaft under the hood is not the only one and the under hood part would need to punch through the steering shaft mounts before it got any where near your sternum and on top of all that the kind of crash that would force the steering shaft into your chest would be likely fatal before then, at least 60 into a tree on the drivers side. All this is mute as to get the type of bond you are talking about would require the shaft to be cleaned and hit with the primer. Filling the gaps to stop the rattling will only fill the gaps and not bond sufficiently to glue the shaft.

It’s a reasonable estimate that you will need to change that filter 5x more often. Would I do that? No, but 2x more often is not a far departure from reality with a lower micron filter. Now, if you ran a 2 filter system you could be in a better situation. Just smacking on a slightly larger lower micron filter will not keep the same oil change interval.

Not to pretend like I know everything but I can’t imagine a solvent based cleaner like sea foam is good for a high pressure fuel pump, let alone a CP4. Especially being poured full strength like that right into the filter. No lubricity. But that’s just my opinion. To each their own.
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 жыл бұрын
the seafoam actually has lubrication properties as well as a cleaner, and it is a petroleum based product so it burns just like diesel. Also worth noting, the can only fills half the filter, so its immediately diluted as soon as the fuel pump kicks on.
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 жыл бұрын
I thought I put a graphic on there to say something, but it's an injector cleaner and lubricant all at the same time, plus also acts like a fuel so it will burn just like diesel. The main reason is to not have as much air in the system when you prime the pump and start the truck also.

@@gavinj.8330 I used to fill the fuel filter with Dexron ATF when servicing heavy equipment aand trucks. It worked great. An over the road trucker showed me that years ago when their fujel filters used to gel from the cold. This got the truck back on the road. Also the ATF cleans the injectors a little when it fires up. This method worked great on evreything I serviced including my Cummins Diesel pickups.

Extend the steering intermediate shaft then use a rubber plug and fill it with thick white grease and then compress the shaft the rubber will stop the grease from escaping this forcing tje grease into the space in the slide part of the shaft . this is a gm service tsb.

My 22 sierra denali gasser started making that steering noise at 4,000 miles. Progressively getting worse.
@curvs4me
@curvs4me 2 жыл бұрын
If the noise comes back, I'd find a snowblower or similar axle or chute bushing made of the hard Teflon, delrin or similar. Slide around the upper shaft and into the top of the lower. As far as retention goes, maybe a weak spring that stops on the upper knuckle and a washer on the bottom that holds the bushing in place. They make super thin plastic bushings with a shoulder and a diagonal slit in the side to wrap it around a shaft without removing it. Just a spring maintaining a slight pressure might be enough to keep it from rattling. A lot of the Japanese cars with extendable columns already have a spring there when I think of it. I remember some columns shooting out on their own when you release the position latch? I don't remember make or model though.

I forgot to ask about the bypass pressure setting on that filter, and until the filter goes into bypass mode i am concerned with oil pressure and oil starvation. The L5P already has low idol pressure as well low operating pressures.

on the 2020+ trucks you've got to relocate the fuel cooler pump, PPE have a bracket and hoses to do just that, but I haven't done it yet.

I'm curious! I have owned two Duramax 2500s and have been lucky to never have this issue. Now that I see the shaft I have ask, has anybody taken the slip yoke apart and greased it well? Or better yet put in a zerk? I know back when I spend a lot of time offroad it was common for a slip yoke to cluck when it was dry of grease.

If u fill the filter let it sit for a minute all the oil get sucked into the element then fill it half way again I usually just fill it and thread it in as fast as I can rather spill a little Even doing this it takes 15 sec to get oil pressure

I noticed your use Mobil 1 oil I have a question if you can answer it I have a 96 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.7L vortec engine when I was running conventional oil it didn't use a drop, and it doesn't smoke, when I switched over to full synthetic mobile1's 5w30 about every 1500 miles itll use 7/4 quart it's not leaking or smoking, and the tailpipes clean, should I go to a thicker weight I've tried 10w 30 Mobil1 and the same thing.

Does this noise sound like a really loud popping ball joint sometimes? No consistency or repeatability? Been chasing that type of noise on my 2018 1500 for 35k miles. Cant believe GM is still using that garbage filter location on the duramax after all these years.

That stock off the shelf excuse was so typical GM dealer, After someone spends the kinda money you spent on that truck you wound think that they would at the least admit to hearing it, this is why I have never bought a new GM product both my Mother and my brother did and both got the very same excuse.

Never seen anyone pre fill a filter with seafoam before. Seen people use ATF though. Hows Seafoam do in diesel? I only ask because seafoam has pretty good amount of alcohol in it and thats a big no no in diesel fuel. I would think adding MMO or ATF would be safer.
