Has been discussed on the forums and general consensus is the dent is factory. It is clearance for the front driveshaft. Every XJ I have crawled under has it.

Good content just a 🤏question. Do you back purge the exhaust at all or does it not make enough of a difference to worry about it on exhaust?
@LawrenceTolman3 жыл бұрын
usually the only time I back purge is on a pre-turbo pipe where I need to make sure its extra clean inside... for regular exhaust I usually never back purge because of the added expense, and I don't see a huge benefit

The smashed sections are mandatory. When i first did my lift my front drive abashed sandwich my down pipe. Then i had a a stick get sucked up there and smash it even more. Ended up cracking the pipe and replacing it.

I've heard that 1in² of exhaust pipe flows 115cfm and that you should shoot for 2.2cfm of flow per hp. By that formula, 2.25" pipe should support 207hp and 2" pipe should support 164hp. You should try to be as close to your actual flywheel power as possible to keep the velocity high but not restrict flow. If you go smaller, it will raise torque below the peak torque rpm but if you go bigger, it will raise torque above your peak torque rpm. I've also heard that mandrel bends don't seem to help and bashing header tubes doesn't make a difference either but I'm like you and would rather keep the diameter consistent. The Magnaflow straight-through muffler design should flow marginally as good as a straight pipe. I know it's not really feasible to dyno it before and after, but I'm sure you gained power and throttle response compared to the existing system. Love the content. Keep up the good work. I got my ugly shirt this week. Love it. Onward and upward to 100k!
@EricErnst3 жыл бұрын
As far as muffler choice goes, I'm a fan of Magnaflow. On my pickup, I'm currently running a resonator designed for a semi. It's 5"ID X 9" long. I use bell adapters to go from 4" to 5" and back down to 4". I'm using a 4" diesel system from Diamond Eye Performance for my little 350. The bends were already made for my body style. $250. I built my own 3" pipes before the 3-4 Flowmaster y pipe and ran the 4" system after that.

I've been slowly piecing together a new exhaust system on my car. I did the rear half so far while I have the rear axle out, it doesn't look nearly as nice as yours but I also don't have but a few months of self taught welding experience with flux core! I'll do the front half when I put the bigger turbo on. I need a better (TIG) welder!

@IBEDAVE873 жыл бұрын
That looks heaps better. Only one thing I'd note here. The clearance to the trans pan might be a bit tight. Unless SS has a lower heat transfer that I'm not thinking about. Couldn't you wrap that front section in the fiberglass wrap to try and keep heat away from it? Or maybe make an aluminum heat shield to block the heat transfer?

Welding those flex couplers is a trick. I use 1/8" rod and lots of foot pedal.
@LawrenceTolman3 жыл бұрын
i found it was easiest to fuse the two layers of the flex coupler together first to make a thicker area to weld to, and then weld that to the pipe. seemed to make a cleaner result.

Nice video LT love the content and personally I subscribed to your channel right away after you quit PowerNationTV but, man chill with dogging out the lesser individuals than yourself. Most people aren’t trained by a tech school or have honed their skills before, during and after a fancy TV show. Not everybody is able to afford nice TIG or MIG welders to do sweet welds and afford nice stainless exhaust from Magnaflow. Some folks can’t do the welds and can’t afford the $400-$600 price tag for nice exhaust parts with sweet welds from a good welder. They’ve got to bring it to that guy they know that can literally stick it together on the cheap with rock autos best OEM parts. I’m tech school trained myself just as you were though my project car has rockauto’s best sized dual thrusher 2” mufflers, 2” H-Pipe with summits OEM style & quality dual 2” catalytic converters and rock auto’s OEM “over the rear axle” tail pipes. It’s both bolted together with 2” gasket-style flanges and slip-fit joints with standard 2” exhaust clamps. Why? Because, that’s what budget can afford right now. Welding it up properly I’ll do later along with v-bands and better quality performance exhaust parts as I can afford them. We all like your quality of work and your experience level too but, most of us can’t afford “nice” right now and have to deal with “alright that’ll work”. #pandemicsucksforthelittleguy
