They had no reason to think this and no evidence to prove it. The police showed up at his house with a warrant and commandeered all 10,000 dollars of his personal equipment including monitors and other items that didn't store data. Two years later they returned it to him, all scuffed up and drilled 3 holes thru all of his hard drives as 3 drill holes is the standard for data destruction as per the DOJ apparently. I had started to notice a strange pattern with the local police. An emergency on your part doesn’t constitute an emergency on theirs. Had a possible armed person who was an addict on work property. Call the cops, and they said “we’ll get someone out as soon as they’re available”. I watch cruser after cruser dive by. Some stopped in a parking lot near by to chat with each other for a few and then drove off. The person left after 45 minutes of being asked to. I left 15 minutes later and drove to the other side of town. An HOUR rafter I got to the other location, I get a call. “The officers are at “X” location in the back at the end of the parking lot. They don’t see anyone, can you come out?” I was like, I lift over an hour ago! The person already left before I did. And, I said they were in the front of the building not the back of the lot. Did you even listen to want I said? The response was “so they can leave the area then?” I should have said no, wait till I get there. This person shows up again a few nights later after we have been closed for hours, and starts shooting up in the front step. Called the cops three times and me saying if he OD’s, it’s on you, I know this is being recorded, before they finally said they would “make it a priority. Cops really don’t want to work. Nobody had seen anything but he wanted to see if anyone drove by my house since nobody ever drives down that road that early. And it was a 50/50 chance he'd gone this way. Long story short... he was seen driving by, they knew who he was, and caught him about 20 minutes later. Cops showed up a few weeks later because there was people calling in about a small car driving around through people's yards and stuff. Turns out I got him on camera then too. He was driving a mini through people yards but there are a lot of minis around here. As luck would have it, when he was driving through my back yard, he almost hit my house.... and I say "luck" because he drove right up to my camera and he had his internal lights on. Got his face, license plate, and everything. Was arrested almost immediately after that. The cameras come in handy. I keep them running on with motion detection 24/7 and have 4 of them. The outside cameras are Blink Minis with motion detection. As a carrying cam: What I do is use a pen cam (SIRGAWAIN Hidden Spy Camera Pen 1080p) with a 256GB SD Card. By itself it only lasts about ten minutes ...but the trick I use is to keep it plugged into a power bank (GETIHU Portable Charger) in my pocket. I tested it once and it recorded straight for over 28 hours like that. Probably could have gone a little longer but I just chose to unplug it after that because it seemed sufficient enough. It records great (audio and 1080 video) and it only cost about $35. Not as great quality as the CamPro bodycam ($140) but still. You can't beat that price for a 1080p pen cam (assuming you use the trick I use to prolong record time). A word of advice though. If you do plan on using the pen cam and the trick I use ...be sure to buy a USB cord that has a thinner connection (the end that plugs into the pen cam) because the one that comes with it is too thick to use at the same time as having the SD card in it because they are snug right next to each other and you won't be able to plug them both in at the same time otherwise.

The downside of that attitude is that the people you pay to keep crime out of your life are less able to do so. Thus any burglaries you or your neighbours have are unlikely to be solved. The concept of the police (& courts) is that they work diligently and with integrity to reduce crime. The challenge we now face is that many laws do not encourage the behaviours or justice, fairness, or integrity. eg: Civil Forfeiture. This appears to be a huge conflict of interest. Any money collected should be put into a charity for victims of crime. And there should be a cheap way for people to prove the cash is legitimate, in cases where it is.

He always said if they came to him and asked nicely, he would tell them he would get back with them later but would show them the place in the garage that looked like it used to have a DVR or some recording device with all the wires coming out of the wall. Ok, first, don't listen to the naysayers and conspiracy theorists. All of the undesirable outcomes for using cameras are no different than car wrecks in comparison to car usage. The benefits far outweigh the risks. To help you with your point, if you have a loved one that is robbed and beaten all while being recorded on a neighboring home or business, then that recording is evidence. The owner has an interest in keeping their data private. The People via the State, have a legitimate interest in the data as well given that crime like this is substantially detrimental to the peace and prosperity of the community. At every step our laws are all about finding and keeping the balance between individual liberties and legitimate State interests. Maintaining the peace and prosperity of the community has long been held as a "legitimate State interest". Hopefully this helps in understanding the legal, moral and ethical considerations given to matters involving the State seizing evidence in this manner.

i do surveillance for a living. i'll tell you two things to remind your viewers: 1. you have no expectation of privacy in a public or publicly accessible area. 2. it is possible to create a separate user account on most systems which only grants access to feeds and records from the public-view-only subset of your cameras. The two points come together to clarify that there already is no privacy under a camera facing into a public area (like on the front of the house looking out onto the street). so trading such a view to anyone does not affect the privacy there, only the incorrect emotional sense of having privacy, which has nothing to do with privacy. you did a good job explaining why on-premise storage is safer against police grabby-grab.

Cops can seize your local network equipment such a DVR. It'll cost you, and require knowledge; but the most secure is to store it at a open-source, audited secure data center in a nation which do not honor US search warrant requests. You also need to use proper local encryption which is also open-sourced and audited, and use a yet 3rd party VPN for the connection which is also open-source, audited and in a nation which does not honor US search warrant requests. In this scenario they may be able to force you to turn over the digital files, but good luck to them to decrypting it.

In most cases, a warrant requiring turning over the system should be considered overkill. The data should be all their after. So, turn over the SD cards in the cameras or the video footage, but the cameras themselves won't do anything for them unless the card must be in the camera to play back the footage due to encryption keys built-in to the camera. This would be very unusual. If they want to do it properly, they should send a CSI (or other electronic specialist), not an officer, to collect the footage. The specialist could download what they want, certifying what was collected, where, & when in order to satisfy the chain of custody. While I doubt the law allows for it, but, if they want to take the whole NVR, instead of leaving the person with no security, they should be required to "loan" the person equivalent equipment to use while the police have their equipment.
