I interpret this as Dr. Fauci being careful about what he answers to very specific questions about meetings and occurrences of events that happened some years back and in a very stressful time of his life. He's schooled in precision and prefers to speak with a high level of certainty. If it is'nt there he prefers to not offer an answer. Besides he's not getting any younger.
