I would love it if someone could explain to me WHY car theft isn't one of the crimes that police department are allowed to initiate chases for. Is it something like being understaffed or lacking the right equipment? Because it seems like they had a car and enough people willing to participate, so I don't get it. And I suppose the officer's death was ruled in no way the thief's fault, even though if he'd never stolen the car, the officer should still be alive (yes, I know I'm reaching, but I can't believe this guy almost got off, and it was basically the police's job to let him). And what trips him up is trying to have someone killed. Not the actual death related to his crime.

Cops don't often pursue high speed chases for too long unless the suspect is considered armed and dangerous, mentally unstable, or has already killed someone. Otherwise, for any other crime most of the time its just not worth the risk to possibly have the chase end in a crash, or other type of accident, that could leave someone permanently disabled or dead. Which is what happened in this particular case as it could be argued that, because the cops went against policy and initiated a chase that they weren't supposed to, it would the the fault of the pursuing officers for the fatality because THEY created a situation that led to this outcome. Its shitty, absolutely, but its how it is
