My story goes like this... I started my career in 2004 when youtube was not a thing. I always asked questions to my peers, superiors, and peers in other departments. I was not able to connect the dots. In fact, most people would not share the info/question as they see me as a threat to their job. Since the advent of youtube, I have learned so much that I don't need to ask anyone at work. There are so many teachers like you Keith who is exactly what I was expecting at the earlier part of my career. You are awesome and the younger generation is lucky to have youtube and they don't even realize what people like you are offering (I would not say all, but most). God Bless you, Kevin Barker.

Wow. You worked in an era that you could have gotten a job with the fundamentals. Today, to be a network tech or engineer you will need the CCNA minimum or CCNP and years of experience and master's degree. I think before there was not much resources that were available and people were trying to keep their knowledge to themselves to be competitive and keep their job. I probably would have survived in your era. Today, I don't survive despite CCNA certification and degree and tech experience. I cannot get a job in this field.

Keith one thing you said, hit home for me. Breaking a complex subject into small chunks. The first time I stepped into the cockpit of a C-5 aircraft as a maintenance tech and saw all the guages, I thought No Way, I'll ever learn this. Luckily, my trainer broke it into the fuel system, then electrical, etc. Took about a year and I was running the panels with the best of them.,. Thank you Thank you Thank you Keith. I am Loving this course and the way you instruct!!

@20:20 I am pretty sure I understand this but just to check: All NICs have a MAC address BUT in the case of the switches interface(s) they don't actually have a true "burnt" MAC address? (Excluding the switches management port) Instead the MAC of the connected device is learnt stored in the MAC address table and used on the switches interfaces(s)? Really informative videos Keith, Thank you very much!

My question is somewhat complex And I hope I can get the message across. In short - Why can't we use MAC instead of IP? The problem is in the hierarchy and in the routing tables, right? But what if we abstract from this idea and look towards the report of Radia Perlman, where she talks about how people initially did not understand the concept of Ethernet and L2 forwarding might not exist at all and all operations were performed (forwarding and routing) on L3. I will leave a link and timecode for the report.kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4ndkIWud6uEaJI It would be nice to hear Keith's opinion. Thank you.

Hi Keith, i appreciate your way of transferring the knowledge to us. can you please read my example below to answer my question? i am sending ping request from PC 1 to PC 2, the switch does not have MAC address of PC 2. switch will use ARP protocol to identify the MAC address of PC 2. to my knowledge switch deal with frame which is L2 and does not contain IP field. so how the switch going to map the IP of the requested PC with its MAC? i hope i have delivered my question correctly. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the question Abdulrahman Abdulaziz. "I am sending ping request from PC 1 to PC 2, the switch does not have MAC address of PC 2. switch will use ARP protocol to identify the MAC address of PC 2. to my knowledge switch deal with frame which is L2 and does not contain IP field. so how the switch going to map the IP of the requested PC with its MAC? " If PC1 doesn't have the MAC address of PC2, PC1 will issue an ARP request. When PC2 responds to the ARP request, the switch will now learn the MAC address of PC2 (if it didn't already learn it from an earlier frame from PC2). When the switch receives a frame and doesn't know where it live, it will forward the frame to all other ports associated with that same VLAN. Hope that helps.

Keith I got both answers correct. All devices with Network interface card has a MAC address, layer2, Ethernet, Physical, or in or burnt in address. Second answer, if a Client wants the layer2 address of a network device on the same network, it obtains it through ARP. Yeah!!!!!!

Obvious to me, you know alot about this light years beyond I understand. Question: For a wireless connection to your a switch or router, would it be connected to some other port (virtual ) since it is obiously not connecting to physical port since it would not be entering via a physical rj45 on the router ? So another question is spawned, so wirelees goes through an access point (AP). Where does AP fit into this? My modem/router at home obviously has AP build in. Where would AP fit in this topology of Router / Switch etc? Like your presentation skills. Keeps it interesting. Thank you.

Hi Keith! I have a question. Hub (or dumb hub) isn't secure because it sends data to all devices connected to its ports, whereas Switch is more secure because it only sends to the destined device connected to a particular port. But, when a Switch first starts, it learns by broadcasting the data to all ports hoping that the destined device is there (ARP process), doesn't that mean it's also not secure?
@thisguysnewaccount1
@thisguysnewaccount1 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly, yes the switch will need to send out a few broadcasts when learning what's on the ports but it's not just sending the full payloads to all devices on the network. Switches are smart and can send a request for just the MAC it's looking for once found it will then send the full payloads of all packets. It will also then store both the sending and receiving devices MACs in it's MAC table. Unlike a hub that will send all data to all devices every time, unsecure and a waste of bandwidth.

Arg, I originally passed up getting into networking when a friend of a friend pulled out his Novell CNA book in '92. I'm still kind of in shock at how much Cisco has deleted in 301. I remember when everyone sighed in relief that Appletalk was deleted, however the current CCNA seems to be missing a lot of foundational stuff now.

Thank you for the question Gioni. In the early days, about 20 years + or more ago, we used coax and 10Mbps networks. The history of baseband, and a shared bus, and the evolution to hubs, then to layer 2 switching help a learner understand the tech we are using today.

~50 mins I finally managed to mentally pull VLANs back to L2 in my mind. I've constantly associated VLANs with IPs and subnets. The broadcast domains logic has finally clicked. Thanks for your content, it's helped me greatly. :)

Are these the same video lectures with those in CBT Nugget by Keith Barker?? Then why should I buy CBT Nuggets membership?? @@;

Thank you for the question Marcus. These KZbin series are more like office hours for a teacher. In these videos we discuss some specific tech or option, then spend the rest of the stream having Q&A. @CBT Nuggets it is 50+ hours of labs and focused training based on the 200-301 blueprint, and it is very to the point and thorough on all those topics. We have a free 7 day trial if you would like to check it out. ogit.online/Keith-CBT Thanks for the question.

Hey Keith. New subscriber here! I watch many guys explaining CCNA topics and they are doing a very good job, the same happens with you of course. You are the only one that i can actually sit down and watch for about 1 or 2+ hours continuously and not getting bored. I have a question regarding MAC addresses. Why we need to use both MAC addresses and IP addresses? My understanding of why we need both is that MAC addresses are used for hop to hop delivery and IP addresses are used for end to end delivery but i don't have a clear understanding. Can you explain please???

Thank you Stefanos Kattirtzis. Feel free to join my Discord sever. Lots of people there helping each other out. Each Saturday at 10am Pacific I hold my "Office Hour" where learners can ask questions about the topics they are studying. Mostly focusing on Cisco CCNA 200-301 topics. Feel free to join us there live if you are available. Here is the link ogit.online/Join_OGIT_on_Discord Thanks again Stefanos Kattirtzis!

I need a complete package for CCNA. Is there a playlist where I will find every important thing to pass the exam and get the basic skills? I have zero experience in networking.

Thank you for the question Ankit. I would suggest to start with Network+, and for the next few months, it is free at CBT Nuggets. Here is the link: adept.at/cbtnuggets/network-n10-008

Really good stuff. Excellent teaching tool to supplement CCNA learning course. Also, your enthusiasm is contagious. However, I’m surprised you’re surprised that 666 should appear in the MAC address when we all know that networking is the work of the devil. (PS: I’m not really superstitious of silly man-made constructs) 😉
