You could of used a netting or some mesh to do the cross hatching
@AndyLawsonawl6 жыл бұрын
That's very true, I hadn't thought of that. I wanted to try out the lifting technique on something and this project seemed to be a perfect opportunity. I'll try a mesh next time and see what comes from it. Thanks

I appreciate you spending time speaking about correcting broken values/ Islands as this is something a lot of people struggle with, i like to try and work them into the piece and not make them stand out, this can be done with additional background images in a second colour Overlayed in the negative space, another technique is to work with multiple stencils that intersect the "islands" into a top half and a bottom half, this can be challenging to do with gradients but with block colours can prove to be quite easy :)
@JK-de1oy4 жыл бұрын
Islands are also called Values, however pictures can have multiple values, done right, the more values you have the deeper the image, the less they contrast the more "3D" the image will look. A lot of C.A.D/C.A.M programmes and a few other softwares refer to them as Islands However in programmes like Photoshop/illustrator and other graphic design programmes they're are referred to as Values. If you study art and are being taught about Values make sure to pay attention because done right they can turn a painting into a masterpiece May you all enjoy your creative journeys x Happy to help :)

Is there any way to check for Values/Islands in Illustrator? Like a way to make sure there are none.

That’s a screen print job all day. For the crosshatching you can use a screen. Just cut your stencil and add the screen.

your skill with a scalpel is outstanding and you have so much patience. Have you thought of picking up a vinyl cutter that would cut card stencils for you.
@AndyLawsonawl6 жыл бұрын
Thanks indiandy03! That's very kind of you to say. I have thought about buying one and have always talked myself out of it because of price but mainly because it would take all the fun out of it. The cutting out part is half the joy of stencilling. Thanks for the comment!

@slickfunk994 ай бұрын
Is that a spray adhesive to get the stencil to stick? If so, what kind?
@AndyLawsonawl4 ай бұрын
@@slickfunk99 it’s called 3M Spray Mount, it’s the blue one. Don’t get 3M Display Mount, it’s the red one, it’s a much stronger glue and your stencils won’t peel back off nicely. Learned that the hard way.

Do u have any software which can cut this stencil on laser instead of doing with hand
@AndyLawsonawl3 жыл бұрын
I could get some, but that would take away the fun of stencilling. The challenge of doing it by hand is the reason I stencil in the first place. It also adds character to the finished piece. Thanks for the comment Harinder

It makes sense now but how do you make the stencils bigger
@AndyLawsonawl4 жыл бұрын
Forgive me David, I'm not 100% sure what you mean. I tend to use a VERY old version of Adobe Illustrator to size the art works onto an A4 page and then go from there really. Rarely do I go bigger than A4. The video I did on the Sgt. Pepper drum skin was the biggest I have gone before. You could do it on Microsoft Word if you needed to. Thanks for the question my friend. I hope this helped.

Hi there, yes you make looks easy, but is not, what I would do is use a plotter machine to do the cutter for that matter, it saves you a tons of time, and the results in the end is very good, however still no easy task. thank you for sharing, cheers from Brazil!

What you are using to fix the stencil on the actual working piece? I've done it without all the time and the results are not that good :/ also it seems that the stencils are still intact after peeling it off if I'm not mistaken :D Tell me your secret to get sharp stencil edges xD plss

Haha! The secret is pretty easy my friend. 3M Spray Mount. It's perfect for stencilling because if you haven't quite got it in the right place you can peel it off and try again. Jump to 6:50 in the video and you can see the can. Good luck and send me some of your work plss

Andy Lawson ahh sounds familiar:D but hopefully some employees in my country "Germany" are English-speaking experienced and know what I'm looking for :D if not... Google will help... I'm really new to stenciling and did my second stencil in a while for my art class and have to say it was huge project way over my usual drawing skills xD but it was really relaxing and forced me to use my rusted brain again. I went with a huge geisha and a touch of Trash Polka... I would show it to you but my prof has it to take a look on it and maybe I will get my A+ for it "crossed fingers" xD it turned out great but the edges are not crisp like yours._. But I automatically used the same technique as you in this video from black to white with more details :) know I'm prepared for upcoming projects and I have found a new hobby besides regular drawing :) I'm very glad to come across kind youtoubers like you ;) thx for sharing your awesome work and little moments of life :> keep it clean and greets from Germany ^^y

How do you figure out which ones to cut out for the layers?
@AndyLawsonawl4 жыл бұрын
This will sound weird but I try to look at it as if it was 3D. I start by looking at the background, then seeing what lies on top of that. All the way through to the fingernails. It seems strange trying to explain it. I'll find another stencil to do and post a new video soon explaining how you figure it out. Thanks for the comment
