Last fall I purchased the Senchi Designs Alpha 60 Hoodie in orange, but a couple of weeks ago I gave it to my son, because I purchased the Senchi Designs Alpha 90 Half Zip Hoodie in dark sage, which I like much better. The half zip is really nice and the Alpha 90 is a little heavier material. Although the material is amazingly warm for the weight, the material can snag very easy so I never wear it as an outer layer and always wear a wind jacket over the hoodie.

Good video. I agree... as a hike group leader for many years, I always told people that you need to start a hike "chilly". Never bundle up too much as you will start to sweat within minutes. Not everyone would listen and sure enough, a mile into the hike we would have to stop for people to de-layer.

Nice tips and cool gear highlights for layering. I also hike hot, so I usually start out in just a t-shirt even on the coldest of days. I usually put something extra on when not hiking though. Looked like a nice hoodie. Take care and have a great day.

I love the Alpha fleece! I’ve got a 90gsm hoody that’s been fantastic… the only downside is that it snags really easily on briars & limbs - so not great if you’re bushwhacking! But it’s my go-to layer for most of my trips! I even got the matching pants & socks for an entire alpha camp pj set 😁. So comfy/cozy! Love the saffron 😊

I end up hiking with my base layers bottoms and getting overheated too hah. I love the Senchi Designs Wren which I guess they renamed Alpha 60 Hoodie. Nice 'Saffron' color hah. It pretty much replaced my puffy on most occasions. The washbag is great. I'll use it as clothes bag or pillow. When I first got it, I tried using it as a base layer and the sun hoodie as a wind breaker. It was comfy, but it would still get me overheated quick. I'll usually have it on the top of my pack so I can put it on or take it off quickly.

Really good tip! I wear very little when hiking when the weather is around freezing and then have to dig out some clothes when I stop moving. I am so grateful that compressible coats and the like. LOL! Saffron! 40s? A light long sleeve shirt & hiking shirt would keep me warm as long as I kept moving. That looks plenty warm! How is the wicking properties?

John, sounds like you're prepping for politics. "I didn't lie. I just didn't tell the truth." 😂 I never really layer up in the tent. I wear my base layer and a fresh pair of socks just for sleeping. Anything more, like a puffy, and I sweat. That defeats the R-factor of the bag or quilt. I never wear my base layer on the trail. Like you said, it's too hot. I do start (if it's 20 or below) with my puffy and gloves. After a mile or so, the puffy goes in my pack. Another 2 miles and my shirt goes in my pack too. I can hike in my t-shirt, but when I stop my puffy goes on during the break. Everyone of us develop our routine to stay as comfortable as possible. Good for you with your Senchi hoodie.
