Laying Aluminum Flooring In My Tiny Boat Build! | Salvage to Savage #4

Last weekend we kept chugging along on my 16' Starcraft Tiny Boat build. We laid a couple sheets of aluminum down on the floor as we look closer to working on the casting decks in the future.

Cardboard for templates are the key bud. Will help you cut pieces that fit like a glove.

I just finished up my winter project. Happens to be the same exact 16 ft starcraft, mines a 1977. Put 2, 1 gallon kits of total boat pour foam in it. All aluminum floor and front casting deck with rear seating/ storage boxes. Put bedliner in and painted complete interior tan. Put a new minn kota edge and new mercury 25 hp on. Wish I had a way to send you a few pics.

I'm not sure on aluminum however when cutting sheet metal like r-panel I was taught to use a wood blade turned backwards in a circular saw. But you're doing a great job. I can't wait to see it finished up.

I’m not sure how well the wood blade would have done if it were backwards, because of the carbide tips on this one. Using the abrasive cutting disc was definitely not correct though😅

@Mark Legate I’m going to be doing a rubber undercoating for the interior and the outside is going to be wrapped

great documentation on the build. looking good. just from my experience, use a blade that is meant for aluminum, diablo makes them. or us a cheap power shear from harbor freight. much easier for cutting tapers etc. just my 2 cents. great work though, keep it up!

I appreciate that! This Diablo carbide tipped wood blade did surprisingly well, pretty clean cuts. I’m in the process of building a garage now but I’m looking forward to getting the boat inside to work on it again!

Why go with .90 aluminum? Wouldn't .40 work as well and be a little cheaper? Good suggestion with the wood cutting, fine tooth carbide blade. I heard in another video the wood cutting blades would work well on aluminum sheets.

Yeah the wood blade did fantastic. Wish I took more footage of it. I went with .090 because it’s what I found most people recommended for subfloors on forums. I think tiny boat nation recommends .063-.090 and .090 was actually cheaper than .063 from the guy I got metal from

Where did you get your aluminum? Also you should use a metal shear. You can get one at menards or harbor freight for about 60-80 bucks. That's what I used on mine

I got my aluminum from a local machine shop, look for someone who does CNC machining because they’ll normally have a good link on aluminum sheets. They were $275 a sheet which was way cheaper than any online retailer I could find. I considered shears but the circular saw will have more uses for other projects. The cut is really clean and straight once I found the correct blade to use.

I'm going to use marine grade plywood I bought at home depot it was $125 a sheet I had to order it. I used it on anther boat I had and it worked good.

Awesome man! That’s what most people do too. I just chose aluminum to stay as light as possible and it’ll last a lifetime

Awesome! The boat is in the garage for the winter, but I have a single stall garage so I haven’t been able to work on it. Waiting for the weather to warm up so I can pull it outside and get back to it!

Cut edges are getting hot, melting aluminum and binding with blade. Lube with water for cleaner cuts.
